Quartz is no good in sub zero weather as the batteries freeze plus the battery can die with little or no notice. Only a mechanical watch is dependable in extreme conditions

If you are going on a polar expedition you had better take a mechanical watch because your smart phone won’t work either.

I work as an MRI radiographer, I bought a Seiko 5 and was a pain in the ass to take it off for a whole week and the setting day/date/time for a Saturday night. Now I’ve got a quartz prx and is great to have it always ready to go and having that build quality for ~$400

@@_iErik Those are really nice mechanicals but he may not be allowed to wear any kind of watch as an MRI radiographer for safety reasons (he can correct me if I'm wrong.) Quartz is very magnetic resistant though at a significantly lower price point. A strong magnetic field may disrupt the stepper motor but it'll start running when removed from the field - A magnetized case won't affect the accuracy of timekeeping like a mechanical movement.

Wasn't a bad watch when I wore it most days, but the moment it had to be part of a rotation... Nope. Not faffing about with that movement when there are all these other watches in the box.

I own a Seiko Astron GPS Satellite (SSH 073) solar and is accurate to absolute precision. 1 second every 100,000 years. Check it out! i also own a Citizen Promaster eco drive and an Omega Seamaster quartz which i bought in 1978 and still going strong❤

I run a Longines VHP GMT as my daily. I have to agree with a lot of people who say it doesn't have soul. But it's brilliantly accurate and looks great. I'm able to switch between a certified beater and the Longines so to me I have the best of both. Adrian please keep producing your articles they are great. 👍

I work in the horticultural world, I work outdoors often, in all weathers. I’ve worn a quartz Bertucci field watch for the last decade. It’s beaten up, gone through three batteries and as many straps, but it remains reliable and accurate. Don’t get me wrong I’ve also got a collection of beloved mechanical watches but cheap, reliable and tough quartz watches are perfect tool watches. I put it on and forget about it until I need the time.

Vintage Seiko chronographs from the 80's are super cool. I have a Speedmaster replica. 7a38 7070, 40mm dial, diver's bezel, tachymeter, day/date, 1/10 seconds subdial, split time, 100m water resistant, 10.5mm thick, accurate to 5 seconds per month. Fully rebuildable and adjustable 15 jewel metal movement with no plastic parts. Had it serviced recently, full disassembly, case, movement and bracelet cleaned in ultrasonic tank, reassembled and lubricated, all new pusher gaskets and bezel and caseback seals, adjusted and pressure tested and new crystal for $500 by a vintage Seiko specialist. It is a 1982 model. Should be good for another 40 years now.

If you care about horology and are interested in accuracy, you can’t help but admire the evolution of the watch industry. Quartz watches were an absolute revolution for the average person interested in obtaining a remarkably accurate watch at an affordable price. Certainly there are people, like myself, who admire and own hand made high end watches. In my mind there is an analogy with those people who admire and drive manual transmission autos. There’s room for those who admire high level, hand made, watches and those who admire affordable, accurate quartz watches.

Exactly. Quartz watches democratised accurate, reliable timekeeping. Go back to the '50s/'60s for a moment. Affordable mechanical watches could be a nightmare . . . always gaining/losing time, always needing adjustment, always needing servicing and repairs. You had to be able to afford a reasonably good one to have a decent chance of consistent performance. Quartz changed all that for the average person wanting an accurate, reliable watch at an affordable price rather than high horology. We should appreciate both types.

This is an interesting one. To say the least. I was a total “mechanical boy” for years until recently got into the quartz world and it’s a fascinating one. The eco-drives, the atomic clock adjustment stuff, the accuracy, .. is mind-boggling on some of these pieces. This video makes sense. Well narrated as always but it just makes sense. True collectors do understand “quartz”. Part of history in watchmaking. Just a small point, contrary to what most people think, Swatch does actually not stand for “Swiss Watch” but “Second Watch” which was a brainchild of Mr Hayek Senior as he had the idea that most people who have a nice mechanical watch, should also own a “second” all terrain watch (gada piece). This was a strategy to of course increase sales in the group but it was part of his idea. Everyone should own a “second watch” = SWatch. I’m not making this up. Got this info from a conversation with Mr Hayek Junior. Anyway , that’s my 5 cents. Loved the video Adrian, very interesting and well put. The quartz history in less than 15 min is impressive.

Adrian. You missed Longines VHP quartz with its perpetual calendar and sleep mode!! PLUS accurate to 10 seconds per year, but in reality tighter, with its Swiss Thermo compensated quartz movement. Also any of the Breitling Thermo compensated movements are pretty special with five jewels on the drivetrain, which is not seen in the Longines.

VHP is accurate +/- 5 seconds per year. That's a 10-second range, but a 5-second accuracy. It also has shock and magnetism sensors that recalibrate the movement overnight if exposed. Love mine!

Huge fan of the 70’s tuning fork movements and watches. I’ve had many including Bulova, IWC and Omega. Also Omega took accuracy to another level in the 70’s with their Megaquartz pieces. The Marine Constellation Chronometer is still one of the most accurate watches ever made. I still love a modern quartz now, and approx a quarter of my collection is quartz. The very first quartz watch available to buy was marketed by Seiko on Christmas day 1969. The first Swiss quartz watches were launched in the following March at Basel, featuring the Beta 21 movement, which was developed jointly by some of the biggest names in Swiss watchmaking - including Rolex, Patek Philippe, IWC, Omega and Piaget. But in 1971 Girard-Perregaux launched their movement, developed with Motorola, and it changed everything. Not only was it smaller and less power hungry than the Beta 21, but it also ran at 32,768 Hz instead of 8,192 Hz. Almost all quartz watches since have adopted the more accurate and efficient 32,768Hz standard, but Girard-Perregaux were the first. How did you miss this??

I've always had quartz moments as part of my watch collection. In fact it's only been in recent years Ive gone back to some mechanical movements. As a paramedic working shift work I liked the totally reliable grab and go of quartz and a dial that wasn't reliant on lume - it had to be easily readable in low light conditions. Ecodrive was a great innovation because it negated battery changes. I have a number of mechanical watches in my lineup now but the convenience of quartz and not having to check if it's running is my go-to for work.

Shellman Grand Complication is one of the favs in my collection. The rational for using quartz was brilliant. A perpetual calendar complication requires that the watch never runs down or it often needs a professional to reset. So, quartz is the perfect energy source for that requirement.

I also have a Heuer 272.006 chronograph from the early 2000 series. With the Heuer 185 super quartz movement. That has a mechanical Dubois Depraz modular and love it. The Heuer and TAG Heuer quartz chronographs are Cult classics

Great episode. I love all watches, mechanical, automatic, or quartz. The watches I wear most often are my Rolexes and my G Shocks. Solar quartz G Shocks with Multiband 6 are set to the atomic clock nightly, so they have perfect accuracy. Cheers!

If they REALLY wanted to make bank, they'd pull a move out of Seiko's playbook and SELL those bare movements to other brands, be they mainstream or microbrand, and offer the superior timekeeping of quartz with an even smoother sweep than 99% of mechanical watches. If they could also develop Precisionist movements of chronographs (preferably WITHOUT those useless 24-hr subdials that plague most quartz chronograph movements), moonphases, and various types of annual and perpetual calendars, or hybrid combinations of each, and they'd EASILY become one of THE best 3rd party movement producers in the world, probably just behind the tried and true NH35 in terms of widespread appeal.

Thank you, Adrian, for this very enlightening history lesson. I personally buy mostly mechanical watches for two reasons: 1. I hate having to change the battery so often, so the only quartz watches I own are ones that are solar powered. (Seiko Astron and Casio G-Shock Rangeman) 2. Mechanical watches, on average, have better dial designs and case finishing, because watch makers who design mechanical watches tend to put more thought into the aesthetics of a mechanical watch because of the higher price point.

I think they've bought wholly into the marketing and image. My daily wear watch is quartz and that is a deliberate, conscious choice of mine to signal my lack of being on board with the watch snobs. And... it's an Astron - another deliberate and conscious choice, for obvious historical reasons. I had one guy argue that the smooth sweep of the second had was what made mechanical watches so superior. Since then I've found myself more attracted to the Grand Seiko Spring Drive movements. And, yes, I have regular mechanical watches as well, including a Tissot that's older than me. I just don't wear it much.

Considering the Swiss haven't had a new since the 80s, I'd say Seiko and Citizen are the only watch brands doing anything to advance the state of the art.

The Quartz revolution was a HUGE win for the consumer. Consumers were able to have timepieces of previously unobtainable accuracy and minimal maintenance for a low cost. The only people who think this was a crisis, were the Swiss manufacturers that were on the wrong side of the paradigm shift, and the mechanical watch snobs who need a way to justify their expenditures on a technically inferior product. From a time keeping standpoint, no mechanical watch can approach the accuracy of a quartz timepiece. If you have a love for mechanical watches, that's great. If you appreciate the craftsmanship in some high end mechanical pieces, Great. If you treat watches as jewelry that tell time, Knock yourself out. But to dismiss quartz watches out of hand is patently ridiculous and snobbish. Quartz watches are currently the best and most accurate means for an individual to track time short of an atomic clock, and plenty of quartz watches can sync with those atomic clocks. And there are many quartz watches that meld the hyper accuracy of quartz with the workmanship found on more expensive mechanical pieces.

Well done Adrian, nice to see a Watch Heavyweight advocating for Quartz. I have my autos but I love my Citizens and yellow Casioak. Solar Quartz is hard to argue against. I have a Quartz OMEGA SMP, it's so slim and comfortable compared to the cautomatics. The Longine Conquest VHP can still be had for around £800 and is accurate to 5 seconds a year and the Bulova used to claim 10vseconds a year for the Lunar Pilot! Asides from occasionally hearing the motor in very quiet conditions, otherwise , I couldn't tell the difference.

Bulova Precisionist Chronograph! Spring Drive smooth movement, tons of amazing history from Cold War to the Moon Landing. Domed Crystal with sapphire option. Measures up to 1/1,000 of a second which is ludicrous. You can even save the battery life by leaving it on chronograph function. Too big for some but more slimed options exist

When I started collecting, I despised quartz watches so much just bcs of the media I was consuming. Nowadays, if I don't feel like wearing my daily automatic, 90% of the time, I'm reaching for a quartz watch unless I feel like winding and setting the time on another watch. They have been growing on me a lot and I can still find so much character in the different high-end quartz movements now that I really can't say they got no soul anymore. My one and only issue with them is the resale market, other than that, all love.

I bought a GS snowflake quartz 6 months ago. Apart from the extreme accuracy, the watch is very thin and so comfortable to wear in light weight titanium. Just 37mm diameter, so better suited to smaller wrists than the spring drive version and half the price.

A great video! Another comment mentioned the 0100 Citizen movement; a true breakthrough in watchmaking without question. The FP Journe that parks its hands as a power saving technique reminds me of the current Seiko Astron range that also share this feature - in addition to auto-GPS sync, solar power, auto DST on some calibres and perpetual calendar including leap years AND leap seconds! Brilliant.

My last 3 watches have been quartz/digital. A citizen promaster diver for at work. A moon swatch moonphase. A vintage gold Casio. After having a few issues with my Tudor, Oris and seiko movements, I’m happy to be able to just put a watch on and carry on my daily activities. To the point I’m contemplating selling all for a grand seiko of some description….

Ive got a 2010 Omega Seamaster Quartz and absolutely love it. Its my travel watch. Looks identical to the mechanical versions and there is no messing about with setting of the time every few days, its grab and go. I can also set the hour without having to adjust the minutes/seconds. I have mechanical watches too, but I never travel with them because they are just a pain in the backside when changing timezones.

Very cool video! I've owned a Longines Conquest VHP GMT (Very High Precision). I set it on a Jan 1st to test it out after a service and battery replacement. It deviated by less than one second over an entire year. And it looked good.

I love this video. I'm so glad you made it. I've had many automatic watches, and the trouble I find with having a collection of them is that it's so tedious to try and keep them all wound and keeping time. It's time I gave quartz a go and I think I'll be very happy if I did.

Those of us who are old enough will remember when quartz was the upgrade, quartz was seen as better because it is the better time keeping technology. And whilst there are indeed some beautiful mechanical movements, your average mechanical is mass manufactured and it is nothing special and just as "soulless" as a equally cheap quartz. I believe this quartz hatred phenomenon can largely be attributed to successful marketing. Historically, quartz watches were seen as the peak of timekeeping technology due to their accuracy and reliability. However, the Swiss watch industry invested heavily in marketing mechanical watches as symbols of refinement and luxury. This strategy involved a two-step process: first, positioning Swatch as a fashionable and cheap alternative, which helped Switzerland regain its footing in the watchmaking industry. Next, Swiss watchmakers took the concept of “watches as fashion” further by marketing their more expensive mechanical watches as luxury items. As a result, many consumers began to prefer mechanical watches despite their lower accuracy compared to quartz models. This shift highlights the power of marketing in shaping consumer preferences and perceptions of value. In summary, it all comes down to effective marketing.

If I had to choose one watch to wear for the rest of my life it would without a doubt be my Breitling Aerospace. I have taken it from the summit of mountains to floating in The Dead Sea and it has never failed me. I have owned many mechanical watches and I have never had as deep of a connection with any of them as I do my Aerospace. It’s absolutely everything you ever need in a watch.

Nice job on this one. After a long stint of just mechanical watches in my collection, I got a GS Spring Drive dress watch. I grew to appreciate it in many ways and it led to other pure quartz watches. I have the watches you featured (some different dials, etc) aside from the Journe. I so wish that sold closer to retail. Just can't pull the trigger at going prices.

Great video. I have a few quartz watches, one of which is the GS gmt heritage. I just wish it had a clear case back to see the incredible movement. The other being a 1985 longines conquest VHP. It’s a dress watch and is wafer thin.

I'm an 'accuracy snob' so HAQ Grand Seiko and Casio G-Shocks for me. There’s nothing better than Japanese engineering and manufacturing. There are plenty of gears, jewels and mechanical action in the 9F Grand Seiko movements.

I love having some quartz watches. I wouldn't spend the same amount of money on them but there is something nice about picking up my watch and it is the right time and date. They serve a purpose and can be great for filling in your collection.

You are absolutely correct. That is why even some of the biggest consumers of luxury watches will have a G-Shock. You buy mechanical pieces, with impeccable finishing and stunning dials as a luxury item. You buy a G-Shock for its utility and durability. There is room for both when you are a watch enthusiast.

I hope to see a similar video 20 years from now praising the qualities of the Smart Watch.Personally, it took me 30 years before buying my first digital quartz watch (Casio G-Shock [Mudman] G-9000-3V).

Bad? No. Good? Sometimes. Quartz is about practicality and efficiency. I love solar square g-shocks. 100ish for a 10 year watch that will go to hell and back. That's incredible, that's a very special thing. In fashion watches, a watch for every outfit, quartz makes sense. Use fake gems, fake precious metals, let someone build a collection that keeps ticking if they aren't worn for weeks at a time, quartz makes sense. But in pricy watches? Watches with a 4 digit price tag? Or even high 3 digit price tag? Hard no. I have zero interest and that will not change. Springdrive - this is a unique beast, I think it deserves to exist in the mechanical space and I'd love to have one.

I've seen so many great looking watches that have quartz movements in them. So many people scoff at them. Sort of how old-school photographers who love film would scoff at digital cameras. If done well, especially like how Grand Seiko has, quartz can be great. Timex has lots of quartz watches that not only look great, but are very affordable. Great video!
