The reason the tuning sounded a little robotic is because he put in the wrong key... He set it to B Major, but since the song is actually in the myxolydian scale, he should've put it in E major.

Auto tune? Just say no! If you're out of tune, just redo the track. I you can't sing in tune, then find somebody who can.

Not to disappoint you, but 95% of modern music uses auto tune primarily as an expression tool, even for the top-top singers, let’s say Ariana Grande, who sings like a goddess and they still use auto tune on her records to make it sound certain way to have it polished like that. Just like some videos or photos need additional noise reduction to turn the image into a “commercial look”, same thing applies here.
