"that was murder!" Have to side with the doctor on this one, the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few or the one. two officials being killed on that ship does not justify murdering a ship full of sycorax at all. "they were leaving" you dont send out a probe with A positive blood in it only for a bunch of alians to find and abuse to control one third of earths population, have the doctor help you defend the planet and then murder an entire ship full of them after they agreed to leave! Harriot Jones, you crossed a line and you needed to own up to that and learn from its consequenses.

Boom town, was written as a very cheap episode, to balance out the more effect heavy episodes in the season. The farting Slytheen was part of the reason for Chris Eccleston leaving. It is meant to focus on their scene in the restaurant and the morality of the Death Penalty, etc. But it is quite superficial.

I think the christmas specials are a uniquely british taste: they clearly take a lot from the concept of ‘the pantomime’ which has a close association with christmas over here, so the over-acting and cheesiness of the RTD specials are 100% in keeping with that, a reading i assume is lost without the concept of pantomimes across the pond(?)

Boom Town is a psychological piece. She was going to destroy Earth to get back to civilization, that was the plot, it was meant to be a look at what separates the Doctor from the villains, if he doesn't care about the consequences of his actions. The point of the body swapping in New Earth is to get a stationary villain into the action. Obviously. And do you really need to shout everything you say?

Dona should come back - if they can bs us with Clara and Bille they can also fix her story, giving her good ending. She is the only companion from new Doctor Who, who deserves it. It would be an amazing story for the next anniversary finale - we don't need explosions and saving whole world again. We need Doctor to look back and fix everything he has done badly. From Susan to Donna (visiting Ponds would be a nice touch also; stealing some regenerations for River, so she could be another recurring regenerating character like Master; returning for Ragdoll and Jenny - in this show everything goes, and after next few decades coming back to old characters would be an awesome idea).

I think the tonal switching in New Earth works best when Cassandra is forced to take the body of one of the diseased and she realizes how horrible it is for them. The fact that this character who had mostly been played for laughs and was a terrible person could actually be effected by emotion really made me feel more for the diseased people and Cassandra herself when she died.

I always have a very soft spot in my heart for Boom Town. When I was little the Slitheen in the Aliens in London two-parter genuinely gave me a week of nightmares between the two episodes and I liked seeing some more resolution from that. And all the characters going out for a meal together in Cardiff and having a laugh felt so genuinely like a group of friends and just gives me this comforting sense about it. I’ve gotta say that the Christmas invasion is probably my second least favourite RTD episode. It’s boring as hell, the fact that the doctor does nothing until the end, the fact that it’s more interested in showing Rose looking at the doctor all the time instead of you know ACTUALLY trying to stop the Sycorax and the fact that the Sycorax goes to waste. They’re good monsters but they do nothing. They just stand there. Only the leader does something. I do agree with the fact that it gets good with the Doctor fighting the leader but that in like the last fifteen minutes. My god a complete disaster of an episode
@klop42286 жыл бұрын
Personally, I love the Slitheen Episodes. The first pair are maybe a bit goofy, but the farting is, in my opinion, bearable, and serves to make the villains less likeable rather than taking down the quality of the episode itself. The slow unzipping, I assume, is just something that comes with the skin suits. It takes a while to get in or out of them. That's important for the ending. Boom Town, as well, while being a fairly forgettable episode in terms of alien plans, is fairly important on an emotional level, in my opinion. Mickey and Rose talk for a while, and more or less break up in this episode. Of course, he comes running a couple episodes later, but that gets addressed. It connects to episode 3 via the rift, of course back to the previous Slitheen episodes, and forward to the next pair with the Heart of the Tardis, and the Extrapolator. And the dynamic between Margaret/Blon and the Doctor is just so entertaining. While it's probably the least memorable episode of the series, it's good fun. And I kind of like the Long Game, but I won't argue that one with you, because I see your points. Also, I feel like Elton is compelling enough for a short episode, though I'll maybe agree with you that the others aren't. And there was no build up to tell us he liked Ursula before he told us.

I like gridlock, but overall, I very much agree with a lot of what u said. THANK YOU so much for acknowledging how terrible the doctor was to harriet jones. personally, I saw the dilemma she was in and she was doing the best she could. also, in doing that, he removed Britain's primary defender, and who rose in her place... oh yeah, the MASTER! Ten actually created the larger problem later in quite a few ways. also, the doctor has done worse. u could easily successfully argue that 10 did in runaway bride. I was the opposite of u with that one. I didn't like how 10 killed all the racknoss childen just bc the empress was evil. i'm arachnophobic, but those were still kids who didn't commit horrors at that point. only the empress did. u don't kill millions bc of the actions of one. but I admit that disdain for that moment is probably bc the same people who justify that moment r the same people who hate 11 for tricking the silence into ordering their execution in day on the moon. they hate 11 for teaching the human race how to defend themselves against an alien race that has continued to manipulate/hurt or kill them and who are all adults, but its ok for 10 to kill racknoss kids? sheesh, the double standard! but there are elements of runaway bride that I liked, like a quite a few on here. but overall, I totally agree with u. good video.

6:15 I always hated the Harriet Jones thing, it feels like so far a departure from "Face of Evil" when The Doctor lays out his philosophy after he dealt with the threat, and the residents are arguing about choosing a new leader, and Baker's adorably blase delivery of "Ah, but that's not my problem." And that's generally his opinion, even Troughton was so squeamish about regime change. I think because this dovetails with Ten's habit of opposing people not for being evil or dangerous, but simply for opposing his personal morality, which is arguably his second-worst character trait.

In regards to the cat people Russell T Davies has clearly no imagination when it comes to doctor who monsters basically the Russell T Davies recipe for a monster is step 1, open a book of animals on a random page, step 2 make a note of the first animal you see (pig, cat, rhinoceros, squid, fish, fly etc) step 3, put the animals head on top of paul kasey and bon appetit the lazy man's guide to monster making

I loved aliens of London and world war 3 as a little kid, If you sat me in front of Netflix with aliens of London, world war 3 or tooth and claw and I was satisfied.

Thinking about it, your whole thing about the Cat People and the Hath and just sticking Animals on human bodies to make aliens really brings a new perspective to the scene with the Pig 'Alien' in 'Aliens of London'.

I wouldn't have put Love and Mosters so high on the list, except for that god awful ending with the image of Elton shagging a paving slab with a face left in my head. Too often Doctor Who seems afraid to do sad and we have this awful hollywood type stick on a happyish ending.

I love that rant on "New Earth". Still my least favourite series opener.

I used to love it. Sometime after abandoning the series when Matt Smith arrived. I didn’t know about regeneration and just knowing David Tennant left and seeing his scary brick shitting performance in Jessica Jones had me revisit the series, and that was the first episode I saw and had tears of nostalgia during the end credits song.

I would have put Last of the Timelords in there. It's really stupid. The Master turns the Doctor in Dobbie, and through some magic words spread by Martha, he is returned to normal???

I absolutely agree on Gridlock. I like that episode, mainly because of the premise - generations living and dying in a traffic jam, sustained by the hope for eventually finding an off ramp which doesn't exist. But you're right that it didn't need giant crab monsters or mood drugs, both of which could have been fine episodes on their own but served little purpose in Gridlock.

As an aside, maybe it's me but I read Gridlock as being allegorical for life. The endless grind for a phantom freedom which no one ever attains.

I saw New Earth and it was actually pretty good. Favorite part was the Doctor being very excited that he cured all those artificial humans of the diseases, I just get a big smile and laugh along with David Tennant. It's such a triumphant moment.

Honestly, I actually like Love and Monsters, probably just nostalgia, but I felt that story was decent. Anyway, there was 10 in your best list, and 10 in your worst list, so there's three left. Which ones were they?

Partners in Crime, The Next Doctor and Rose. All three for me are a mix of things that work and things that don't which more or less balance out.

No mention of Queen Victoria? I really liked her in "Tooth and Claw". I liked "New Earth", though I understand its problems. Cassandra, Rose, and the Doctor have an excellent byplay, though. Tennant, Piper, and Zoe Wanamaker are incredible actors and really elevate the episode with how entertaining they are to watch, IMO. A lot of these episodes are quite good. I only soured on RTD after Torchwood: Children of Earth. But I 100% agree on "Love & Monsters."

I rather liked Voyage of the Damned. New Earth was ok too (to me). Tenant's lesser performance is not a big deal (could even be explained as the new regeneration's personality is still settling in) so I'm fine with it. Therianthropy (part animal/ part human) is pretty common. (its where vampires & werewolves come from even) So, I tend to be a bit more tolerant of it when it's done. Otherwise, I pretty much agree with your list.

Donna is awesome, but, yeah, it's harder in the 1st episode of her tenure. I never liked Rose very much. I'm whole a Donna/Martha/Amy fan. Clara just never hit a stride for me. Martha felt miss-used and Donna was sort of used unfairly by the show.

10. The Christmas invasion (I actually don't mind this episode but something had to be number 10) 9. Aliens of London / World war three (Could have been a very good story but was executed terribly) 8. Partners in crime 7. The stolen Earth / Journeys end 6. Tooth and Claw 5. Army of Ghosts / Doomsday 4. New Earth 3. The End of Time 2. Utopia / The sound of drums / Last of The TimeLords (Utopia is actually very good but I dislike the latter two parts so much that they really bring the story as a whole down) 1. Love & Monsters

Haha, I always loved the "Don't stand me against the lift" bit purely because it's cheeky smiley Eccleston at his best. I used to say The Long Game would have been better without the Jagrafess. Now I'd say the Jagrafess is fine (could do with a better design though) but there is definitely a case of incorrect assigned roles going on. It would be perfect with the Editor as the main villain, since a man in a suit brainwashing the Earth works better than a limbless mouth slug doing it. But the Jagrafess can be the Editor's enforcer, killing off anyone who stands up to the Editor. This smart and mysterious Editor serving as the underling to a roaring mollusc just doesn't make sense

@6:20 - YES! This is it EXACTLY! I feel just the same way- the Doctor overstepped, robbed the entire nation of its golden age because Harriet Jones did something he was *glad* for her to order him to do in World War Three (to take the responsibility off of his hands); it really soured me on the 10th Doctor in a lot of ways- and likewise, as you mentioned, Rose on her own being kind of... whiny and selfish and... generally not good.

In defense of the cat people, I believe they're supposed to be a race that evolved on Earth during the millions of years between now and the End of the World, like Jabe's species was in that.

Yeah I follow the theory, but I still think it's the lazy design choice to make for a non-human species.
