Didn't sound like it made much sense though having Captain America saying heroes should have to reveal their identities. He is a solider that EVERYONE knows the identity of so why would he care? That goes against his whole character. But then again how many times has Captain America "resigned" for allegedly honorific reasons? Watergate? Iran-Contra? blah blah blah

Phil Adams Actually, they did a really good job of explaining why he was Anti-Reg during the event. The biggest tenant being who he is, regardless of the public knowing his identity, he also took the stand to defend the others and their loved ones from being targeted by other parties. I would say it most definitely fits in with his character in a big way... the defense of freedom...

Civil War is on the list primarily, I think, because of how quickly the Pro Registration heroes resorted to underhanded tactics to get their 'victory'. Cloning Thor, the clone then quickly murdering Goliath, offering pardons to super villains whom they knew were murderers, Bullseye, Green Goblin, Venom etc in exchange for helping them hunt down people who were their friends. And that despite that Tony Stark and Mr. Fantastic have never actually paid any sort of penance for their actions. The closest they came to being punished was when The Hulk kicked the crap out of both of them in WWH and almost had Reed crush Stark's head with a mace.

All I can say about "One More Day" is that the whole issue could have been avoided if Peter just looked at the origins of Johnny Blaze. Any Ghost Rider fan would tell you nothing good ever comes from deals with the devil(s).
@ZachsMind
@ZachsMind 10 жыл бұрын
Sorry. You shoulda kept One More Day on the top of the list. The destruction of the Ultimates storyline was inevitable. What's the point of making a series of comic book outside the established universe if you can't do anything and everything to it that you can't do to the established universe, and then blow it up and start over? The problem with One More Day is bigger than just the fact a hero makes a deal with a devil. The repercussions of One More Day affect everyone around Spider-Man. Not just that line. How many attended that wedding that now don't remember it? How many became friends with Mary Jane? Surely Iron Man wasn't the only one who knew, before Peter told everyone at the end of Civil War. It should not be possible for even someone as powerful as Mephisto to pull off without pissing off a lot of other equally powerful entities, some of which benefitted from how things were and would either remember the difference or eventually piece together something's fishy. And Mephisto's powers are not reality warping like Scarlet Witch. He's largely been more about illusion. Outside of Amazing Spider-Man 545 i don't recall him having the power to literally manipulate time. So all he's done is wrap the world in an illusion that Peter Parker is single and Aunt May is still alive. That's an awful lot of effort just for the satisfaction of ticking off a soul so presumably untarnishable as Peter's. So. Which is it? Which reality is the illusion? And just how many people are affected by this? How can Mephisto be that powerful? Would Thanos see a ring on Peter Parker's finger when no one else can? Not that he'd care, but would others who might care? Would Odin notice? Would Thor be able to see through this illusion? The upshot of this was that Marvel wanted to return Spider-Man essentially to where he was when he started. Single. Young. With an aunt. They go off on these tangents and then when their result no longer resembles what their stock holders think makes the character valuable, they panic and retcon. Recently I've heard Thor's gonna become a woman and nobody cares cuz we know after two years of this someone somewhere will just hit the reset button on Thor and he'll be back the way he always has been. Prior to One More Day, Spider-Man had matured into someone who should have been allowed to face his identity and should have been mature enough now to face the mortality of his aunt, but instead the editors panicked, and hit the reset button. Again. However, it's not a reset. It's not even a band aid. Mephisto may be powerful but he's not THE most powerful character in the Marvel universe. Spider-Man's marriage still exists. It's just one demon making everybody think it's not there, and if Aunt May is really still dead, then who's parading about as Aunt May? They can make another Ultimates. Call it something else. One More Day is a maelstrom of madness just waiting for a decent writer to come along and give it a tug, and that could either be a great story that will affect many characters across Marvel, or it'll be the new top of this pile of crap and people will just stop reading these comics cuz no characters are ever really allowed to face change. There's always an opportunity to go back to the beginning and start over again.

It still pains me beyond reason how wrong the writers were to make a storyline as twisted as Sins Past! What they did with Gwen in this storyline was sacrilegious!
@Nightman221k
@Nightman221k 9 жыл бұрын
***** Agreed. It made no sense in the history of the character. Gwen and Norman never shared any scenes together that would have ever had any implication of any feelings at all, well other than the time he murdered her. Gwen was fiercely loyal to Peter and was concerned about him more than anything. And she was the best friend to Harry even before college and at the time that they retconned Gwen's pregnancy, Harry had been dealing with serious drug abuse. There is no way in hell that Gwen would ever hurt her friends and boyfriend so much because her whole character was focused on her caring nature and how much she wanted the best for her friends and Peter. Sins Past should have been retconned out of existence (a lot of people say it was during House of M or whatever event it was but I think Marvel needs to out-right shun it like J. Michael Straczynski has because even he felt it was shit)

It's okay to _like_ Civil War, it's just that basically everything that was important and world changing about it was retcon'd almost immediately... The entire Civil War had basically no lasting effects whatsoever... so killing Goliath, which was seemingly permanent, also happened for no reason. Killing Cap was pathetically see through impermanent and just for shock value. Killing Aunt May was just a way to get Spider-Man out of is relationship with MJ.

Civil War was good but had problems. In the Civil War mini-series, Sue Storm quitting the Fantastic Four is portrayed completely different from the issue of Fantastic Four where the same incident appears. When Peter Parker reveals his identity to the world, Marvel claimed that this was the status quo and would not "magically go away." One year later it magically went away, which had to have basically erased the Civil War as well. Oh, and you left out the worst part of Ultimates 3, where the first issue revealed that Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch were not just brother and sister, but lovers as well.

I was an avid comic book reader 10 years ago. Ultimate Marvel got me into reading comics. It was the perfect universe for new readers unfamiliar with mainstream Marvel. With Ultimate Marvel, all you had to do was pick up two or three ongoing titles (Ultimate Spidey, Ultimate X-Men, and Ultimate Fantastic Four), and one or two miniseries (Ultimates, Ultimates 2, Ultimate War, Ultimate Extinction, Ultimate Six, etc). On average I would spend $15 a month. Easy and accessible to a 12-year-old's allowance, in my opinion. Thanks to the easy continuity, great stories, ambitious realism, pop-culture references, amazing artwork from the likes of Bryan Hitch, the Kubert family (Joe, Adam and Andy), John Romita Sr., Stuart Immonen, Chris Bachalo, among others. Why? WHY?? WHY DID THEY HAVE TO RUIN IT?! Not long ago, I read a mini-series released around 2009 called Spider-Man: The Clone Saga. It successfully re-wrote the entire 90's miscreant and made it a really good story with a happy ending. I read rumors that this mini shows what Tom DeFalco's original Close Saga was supposed to be like. In my eyes that mini-series and 2006's ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN #97-103 (Ultimate Clone Saga) both redeemed the Clone Saga for me. Here is the cover to the much better Clone Saga mini: img4.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20100307134457/marveldatabase/images/3/33/Spider-Man_The_Clone_Saga_Vol_1_1.jpg An excerpt from Wikipedia: ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Ex-editor-in-chief Tom DeFalco said that under him, the Clone Saga would have been resolved in a different way: "Our plan was to structure the clone saga like a three-act play. Act One would climax at or around Amazing #400-when we revealed that Pete was the clone and Ben was the real guy. Act Two would last around three months and follow Ben's adventures. In Act Three, Peter would triumphantly return as the one, true Spider-Man. Mark and I was hoping the Spider-crew could make Ben a viable character during his turn in the spotlight, and we planned to star Ben in his own monthly title after Peter returned. It was kind of like what I had already done with Thor and Thunderstrike-two very different titles based on a single concept. Of course, our plan went into the trash the day I got fired."[24] In September 2009, a six-part mini-series based on the outline of the original Clone Saga came out, written by Tom DeFalco and Howard Mackie, and drawn by Todd Nauck. Series co-creator Howard Mackie described how this project was born: "Somewhere along the line I discovered a notebook which contained the original notes from the very first meeting at which the clone story was discussed. The original notes showed that the story was planned as a three month event spread across the four monthly Spider-Man titles. At some point Ralph talked to Joe Quesada, and I got a phone call from Ralph [Macchio] asking if I wanted to do a mini-series showing a version that was truer to what the writers originally imagined. Tom and I remember certain story points differently. The goal with this mini-series was get back to basics, to strip away the extraneous stuff that got layered onto the original story, and to present the cleanest possible version of what was a pretty simple story at heart. It was decided that it would be best if only two writers collaborated on this mini-series." ----------------------------------------------------------- I personally liked the idea of Xorn being Magneto. I really disliked the retcon. I agree with Grant Morrison's explanation that Magneto was truly a monster, he wasn't the sympathetic man portrayed by Sir Ian McKellen in the movies. He always acted like a Nazi in the comics before 2005, ironically. In the 60's he experimented with the natives of Savage Land, creating deformed mutates. Planet X should have remained canon. The only good thing about the Chuck Austen run was Juggernaut's redemption. Austen also wrote two issues of Ultimate X-Men, Issues #13-14, on which he reinvented Gambit, and were beautiful and amazing! I disagree on Civil War being bad. Ultimates 3, Ultimatum, Sins Past, and One More Day on the other hand... all copies of those storylines should be destroyed.

Why does everyone who dies come back! Seriously just let Norman Osborn die! Let Aunt May die! Keep Gwen Stacey dead! Having her sleep with Norman Osborn is just stupid and insulting to her character! When did Marvel become DC? Robotic Thor Clone? God how stupid! "One More Day"? How stupid! Quit Joe Quesada! You have no talent, creativity, or have a single ideas that ANYONE WANTS TO READ, LET ALONE PAY FOR! Why couldn't Peter Parker get a divorce? Many people get divorces, and parents and children of divorce could relate to this.... Joe Quesada, go retire and never "contribute" to comics again. Go be a farmer or live under a bridge. You killed Avengers Earth's Mightiest Heroes, which was critically acclaimed and loved by people of all ages, and you gave us Avengers Assemble, which has no plot, makes no sense, terrible animation, it is basically like The Thundarians, but with Marvel characters.

DC fans? not only did civil war FINALLY explode the issue of mutant registration after decades of fans waiting for it to go somewhere, but it managed to finally expose the inner demons of heroes like Iron Man and Spiderman, as well as provide unforseen dilemmas for heroes like Captain America and the Punisher. i was half convinced you were gonna put the Ultimates on this.....oh wait

My comic series has a rule: once dead, theyre dead. Then again, my series isnt intended as ongoing. Like real life, theres a beginning, middle and end. There can be a new beginning or an old end, but not with the same character(s) going forward or back in time. Intention for this? Life has a point A and a point B, but its the time between those points that makes life interesting

Civil War upset me due to the surrender. It had been established in so many comics why the heroes were fighting. Captain America himself continually explained why the fight was necessary. For once, they were fighting to defend their own rights, fighting for themselves and not just the innocent. Suddenly, Captain America decides to surrender because... everyone one is fighting? Literally he says "we're just fighting" and immediately surrenders afterwords. And he does this AS HE'S ABOUT TO WIN. It's so infuriating that so many stupid fights and events happened and yet there was nothing to show for it because Cap surrendered. If they had simply lost the war, that would've been another story, but to surrender because you just now realize that you're fighting and innocent people are getting caught in the crossfire made it seem like they ignored everything else that happened during the Civil War. And One Last Day... I don't even want to go there.
@HadesFist
@HadesFist 10 жыл бұрын
It also pisses me off that one of the tie-in story the writers tries to prove Cap was wrong and outdated just because he didn't know MySpace and American Idol. It also revealed that Tony manipulated the events that started a war with the Atlantians so everyone will lose focus of the registration issue. What a mess of a good concept.
@magneto9210

Sure Civil War wasn't perfect, but the social commentary in it was on point. The Superhuman Registration Act was essentially a parody of the United States Patriot Act, a bill that has essentially granted the government the ability to strip people of their civil liberties simply because there's a small chance that they might be a terrorist, even if it's completely unfounded. They represented the paranoia and fear of that decade quite well.

Parts were a bit choppy but there is this amazing moment where Punisher gets thrown into a wall by Captain America for killing the rogues that they were going to team with,and the Punisher just won't fight Cap and then there's this exchange where Patriot asks why Punisher wouldn't fight back and Spider-Man replies "Are you kidding me? Caps probably the reason he went to Vietnam. Same soldier, different war"

Civil War being on this lists gets a thumbs up from me. My god was that series bad. Main book was boring and lame. The whole law and New Warriors being made to be bad guys for not stopping a villain. If you really think about why this event of all in marvel universe Considering how many villains would love to get to know who there heroes are the whole idea of having to reg your identity made no sense why any hero would do it. Their friends and family at constant risk even more so. Aunt May shooting perfect point to it. I put OMD day over Ultimates 3/Ultimatum because of regular MU and really just ruined spider-man for years. Ultimatum killed the Ultimate Universe except marvel not let it go till maybe soon?

Let me add one no will know about: Marvel launched a daily paper comic strip of Spider-man. I understand how hard it can be to develop any sort of serialized, daily, three-panel story arc (although Mary White and others have done so successfully for YEARS), but in this comic, back in the 70's? 80's? Peter Parker received a letter -- a SINGLE letter -- with which he spent TWO WEEKS debating whether to open or not (and after opening, spent another week to reveal the contents, which I remember as being stupid). TWO weeks! For one week, the panels went something like "Should Open?", "I need to open." "I'm afraid of opening." for the ENTIRE week. Having the ability to choose not to read newspaper comics I find useless, I immediately stopped reading this trash forever more. TWO WEEKS TO OPEN A SINGLE LETTER!!! SHEESH! Worst Plot Line Ever!

Never read any of these. But 'Civil War' sounded pretty dang cool, although I can see how turning Tony Stark into Darth Vader would completely ruin it for most people, and Captain America surrendering for that reason seems against his character, but at least it shows the consequences for giving in to the government XD

Civil war i felt was really good, and shows both sides very well not making either Ironman or Cap look like the bad guys, just vast diffrences of opinion. The ending i can see might bug people but it really makes sense to me that in order to give peace you sometimes have to do underhanded things, things that Tony regrets and hated doing, Capt surrendering also i think was in tune with his character when he realized how dangerous the heroes really are and the destruction they can cause

What a waste... Civil War is the single most memorable event in my time reading comic books, it was deep, had a good story, a difficult situation to unfold for the writers, and everything was consistent overall. They tried it again in AvsX but didnt quite click as much as Civil War did. How is it considered one of the worst moments? thats stupid

OMD in my opinion is on the top spot. It's debatable with the other two, but destroying decades of story just because of Joe Q thinks superheroes should stay single was to me the worst decision he or anyone could possibly make. while I understand the hatred for Ultimatum,I want to say that Marvel has turned it into some great stories since, and I applaud them for sticking to their guns when they said "death is final in the Ultimate Universe" so the Ultimate Universe is not just a new age clone of the 616 but its own thing where really anything can happen! If it wasn't for Ultimatum, we might not have gotten Miles Morales Spider Man!

I agree 100% with Civil War being garbage, but I would replace a few. In no particular order 10. Hank Pym beats Jan (Let it go already, it's been retconned 3 times and people still use it as the only defining characteristic of the character.) 9. Secret Invasion (Let's have a clone saga for the entire Marvel Universe, I loved that they brough Mockingbird back, but the reasoning made no sense like why didn't they realize she was a skrull when she died.) 8. Ultimates & Ultimatum are on the money but are really one story 7.House of M & Avengers Disassembled (Okay Scarlet witch goes crazy after a storyline that was already resolved from 20 years ago) 6. One More Day (I missed out on the beginning of Slotts awesome run thanks to this travesty) 5. The Crossing (If you read it knowing it's going to get Retconned it's not that bad.) 4. The Clone Saga (see the Crossing) 3. Chuck Austin's Avengers (I actually didn't mind his XMEN he brought background characters like Iceman, Husk, and Angel into the light finally, but his Avengers were unreadable and focused highly around number 10) 2. Mark Waid's run on Fantastic Four (I know, I know Blasphemy, but really Doom a man of science leathering himself up to practice magic, then a huge allegory for the war in Iraq that leads to the death and resurrection of the Thing. But Jack Kirby was God...why is that cool? It was the comic equivalent to a Daffy Duck cartoon. If you want a meta comic read Animal Man.) 1. Sentry joining the New Avengers (Paul Jenkins wrote a beautiful mini series as an April Fools joke about a superman like character who was erased from the memories of the Marvel Universe but had actually been there since the 40s. It was Don Quixote in comic book form. BEndis took that story and shat all over it. Making the main bad guy a character who was already dead. And taking away all the aspects of that character that made him interesting.)

The saddest part of the Clone Saga is that it could easily have worked if they weren't so fixated on the booming collector's market of the time and had the gumption to make Peter and Ben just not give a care who was the true Peter since both were living their own lives and both were good people with individual lives. I actually loved the idea of Peter and Ben being part of a sort-of Spider-Family, since Peter was married to MJ and they were going to have a baby Peter could have been a part time Spider-man and Ben Reilly could have been the Spider-man who would protect on the regular while Peter and MJ and their baby tried to lead normal lives.

I didn't mind the reveal. I thought it was a good way to push Spiderman into uncharted territory and get some fun new stories out there. I actually enjoyed a lot of entries on this list--the Clone Saga (though, I was only 10-12 at the time so I guess I have to take it with a grain of salt as I was just happy to be reading super hero comics), Sins Remembered (it made the Green Goblin even more sinister and it wasn't presented that the two had had a "relationship" so much as one ill-conceived night which one could understand how a young, impressional teenage girl might be swayed by a rich, powerful Norman Osbourne) and Civil War (I thought it gave a great display of the characters throughout the Marvel Universe; the one thing I didn't like was how villainous and seemingly nonredeemable it made Iron Man/Tony Stark seem--he signed a deal with the devil, Norman Osbourne, and as the devil always does, he came back to collect). I enjoyed reading One More Day, with a desperate, uncharacteristic Spider-Man threatening punks and beating the snot out of Kingpin in prison but yeah, Brand New Day was awful. Really, really awful.

While I enjoyed Civil War, I agree that the story has done some stupidity, like making Peter tell his identity, making me hate my favorite hero, killing Cap and in the long run, the civil war aftermath didnt matter much, since the registration was erased, all heroes united against Hulk and so on and so on. +boxbreaker2011 6. they broke with tonns of characters like Cap, Ironman and Spiderman, only to fit the nerritiv of that shity story. Spiderman, the paragon of responsipility, would never, and i mean NEVER reveal his idantity publicly and risk the live of everybody around him. Look what happandy to aunt may right afer, or the tousend times bevor when someone found out who he was. Just shitty. Ironman became an maniac who createt killer cyborgs to hunt down his old friends (and to kill them) and workt with villians left and right just so he could look better. Then there was this whole green goblin brain controll killing thing that nobody realy understood. Cap just went nuts at the end and gave up on his pride and stances after he saw that 2 buildings burnd down an an elderly lady broke her foot. No im kidding, that guy fought in a war for the things he knows where right, and even after that he was a very strict character with high standards. But at the end, with no real development he just turnd on everything just so one side could "win" and the event could end. But that wasnt all, they broke with nearly every character. Dont get me started with Mr. Fantastic. 2. they just wanted to get some of the 90s x-men magic for the rest of the books (you can see that that didnt work on how long the registration act was realy aktiv, like, 2 years? wow). The Mutants where a minority, hated by the world, there such a law had inpekt, in the larger superhumen soziaty not so much. I mean half of them can just fly away in space if shit gets to hot. But, no, GREAT SOTRY! 3. The whole story was just a big letdown, so many things where build up for exemple that this is the event that starts the future Cable came from, but nothing ever came from this. 4. So many parts of the story where just outright pointless. Right in the middle of the event a whole buch of sleeper agents from Nemor where revealt wich lead to noting. Wolvariens story was totaly pointles. 5. The sucking of the amarican cock. woooooh, that is the ugliest one. especially if you arent amarican. everytime, and i mean everytime in the story when some character just even so slightly mentions that this is kinda like the 3rd reich or that they should break that law becous ists supid and that slavary was a law before and only could be stopt by breaking it some other caracter imidiantly says "come on, you know amarica ist totaly different and would never do something linke that" and the character that mantiond the thing imidietly say "yeas you are right" and that happend between characters from different factions in that conflict. That made me so angry, the whole thing was supposed to be a conflict abpout law and such, but nope, the law and the state are holy. man, sorry for the rant, im just so sick of people saying thet sotry was great. Saying it is is kinda like the popular thing to do. I dont know why but it is. And trust me, not every comic book fan liks civil war. Its kinda like one of those things that have no midleground. You linke it or you hate it. OH and btw. sorry for my bad grammer and such, english is my third language and im sitl a work in progress ;)

"Civil War" was one of the BEST moments in Marvel history. The thought of someone putting it as the 4th worst Marvel comics is killing me. Sure, the unmasking of Peter Parker wasn't what we WANTED, but it was essential to the storyline. It showed that the person who safeguarded his identity probably the most thoroughly was 100% behind the Registration Act (At the time). It was incredibly shocking to the vast majority of readers, and it served as a GREAT point for other heroes to rally behind. Placing this landmark of a story in a Top Ten Worst list is near heretical. "Clone Saga" wasn't all that bad, either. I actually somewhat enjoyed it. That may be unpopular, I understand that, but I don't think it deserves all of the hate it gets. Sure, there were poorly written aspects of it, but overall it was at least semi-interesting. P.S. In "Civil War", the heroes behind the Registration Act did not attack Cap's people at their camp. They lured them out into the open with a false report of disaster, and ambushed them. If you are going to bash one of the most beloved story's in Marvel history, at least make sure you get the information down-pat.

I'm ashamed to say, but One More Day was single handedly the one comic that forever ruined my interest in Spider-Man. The idea that Spider-Man makes a deal with the devil, no matter who convinced whom to do so, ruined the massive image that the Web-Head was this wonderful force of good that so many other characters had built him up to be, even if he was just a down on his luck guy struggling with a dual identity that was slowly eating him apart. A deal with the devil to either effectively annul his marriage, or heal a simple bullet wound that could have been fixed (that should have been fixed) by any number of methods he sought out by some of the most brilliant minds in the Marvel universe sickened me more than anything. There were a few things that briefly sparked my interest in Spider-Man. The Spectacular Spider-Man series that was sadly very short-lived, and Peter's death in Ultimate Spider-Man which is still in effect to this day as far as I am aware.
