This list is in response to my Top Ten Worst Moments in Marvel Comics that I published a few months ago. In due fairness, here is a list of the Top Ten Worst Moments in DC Comics. Originally founded in 1934 as National Allied Publications, DC Comics has grown into one of the two biggest comic book companies in America. They are the home of such flagship characters as Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, and the Justice League. Despite their enormous success, they have had their fair share of horrible moments. This list examines ten of the very worst things to ever happen in DC Comics. This list is arranged in chronological order of when each event was originally released.

I read comics for about 26 years and in that time I don't remember a major DC Villain called Dark Seed. Can someone enlighten me? Is he a new character introduced since the horrid New 52 started? Is he a love child of Poison Ivy and the Floronic Man? I know who Darkseid is but I must admit Dark Seed escapes me. I guess my once vast knowledge of comic books has begun to vanish from my brain.

there are still gems in the new 52. Animal Man, Swamp-Thing, Dial H, Demon Knights, Azz's Wonder Woman were all good. and the best part all those crap events in the past got erased. Batman's lore has taken the worst hits from the reboot i'll say though

I Can Dig That i loved Court of Owls, but didn't like it's ending. hated Death of the Family didn't read Zero Hour actually what i'm saying that Batman lore has taken the worst hit is mostly the Batman family, 6 years for 4 robins, thats just stupid, should have been a real reboot if they did it with the rest, except GL Dick isn't close with any of the Titans or even met a lot of them Tim wasn't even "Robin", hell he's nothing like old Tim don't get me started on the Batgirls but Jason got a better end of the stick of them all at the very least Grant Morrison and Geoff Johns should have been allowed to finish their Batman and Green Lantern runs before they decided to reboot the universe honestly
@joluoto
@joluoto 10 жыл бұрын
Yeah, while a reboot was getting kinda necessary, this one was handled very poorly. No real thoughts about continuity and issues it presents (Green Lantern continuity is kind of a mess since it still relies heavily on pre 52 events that hasn't happened in this continuity). Also, the way you start a reboot is with strong stories, and while we got some good stuff, we got piles of garbage mostly, like that dreadful Red Hood and the Outlaws, and how they handled Teen Titans and Superman (well that got better, barely).... the list goes on New 52 is how to not do a reboot, while DC quality was already diminishing pre new 52, the reboot was supposed to finally turn the tide, not make it even worse.

Superman did not make an adult film with Big Barda. Sleez commented that Big Barda's strength of will is great. Sleez also comments on Superman's strong moral fiber making him resistant to Sleez's power. All they did was a G-Rated hug and kiss. Jack Kirby hated it? Where is the evidence of that? John Byrne is actually a big fan of Jack Kirby's and Jack Kirby was interviewed with Stan Lee in 1987 and John Byrne's work was brought up when asked if there is anything new they admire, Stan Lee said, "The DC series the Watchmen which I think was absolutely superb. There's the work that John Byrne has been doing. The work that Frank Miller has been doing. Their very sophisticated and their very dramatic and their very cinematic. A lot of them write and draw and they definitely have their own styles." Jack Kirby said, "The younger people have absorbed a lot more than we did, Stan, I think that's what it's all about today. Their understanding of life and what they produce is on a very realistic scale and I don't think that there is anything visually around us that the younger people haven't noticed, that's why I respect the younger people." kzbin.info/www/bejne/d2Lce42Bedx8iKc The Dark Knight Strikes Again art is more cartoonish, that doesn't make it "ugly." The story is refreshingly different, not a repeat of the first Dark Knight Returns at all, that doesn't make it "poorly written." Batman doesn't come off as a "hate-filled madman" at all. Batman is the mastermind behind the take down of Luthor and Brainiac. There is plenty of Batman in the story. "Immature, sexist and blatantly disrespectful towards all of the characters and their legacy"? That is totally ignorant and shows the book went over your head. It's fun, sexy and blatantly returning respect towards the characters and their legacy. It's a love letter to the cosmic Silver Age comics in many ways. Frank Miller's work is so misunderstood, mocked and dismissed as crazy by lazy ignorant fanboys. All-Star Batman & Robin The Boy Wonder was about why Batman needs a Robin. That he needs a restraining figure. Batman as created by Bill Finger and Bob Kane originally killed and fought the police. Read the Batman Chronicles volumes, kids. Alfred gave Dick Grayson a bacon cheeseburger and french fries and milk on a silver platter.

Obviously more recent stuff will be remembered easier, so this leaves out a lot of terrible stuff that DCs done in it's long history. Even sticking to post-crisis DC, we could mention: How the Justice Society was abruptly cancelled and the killed for no reason in Zero Hour. The almost hateful way Amethyst saw her world collapse, her family disintegrate, being snubbed by her mother and finally willingly walk into a nasty, violent death. How Thriller, one of the best comics of its time, got botched because editorial mandates made the creators leave. The hotline set up to vote on whether Jason Todd would live or die on A Death in the Family. How Sarah Essen Gordon got shot in the head by the Joker just because a major story arc was closing and somebody "had to die" (!). The horrible "Face to Face" series in Batman, where long established rogues get killed for pure sensationalism and Batman willingly trains Two Face to be an expert at martial arts before abruptly cutting him loose so that he would go insane. The original and literal woman in the refrigerator moment that is the murder of Kyle Rayner's girlfriend. There are lots of other times when characters are off'd, but these lead to new possibilities or make for great storytelling. These and so many more, though, are just cheap.

Mario Morales I have to disagree with you on the Jason Todd one. At the time a lot of readers didn't like the character and I don't think giving the readers an opportunity to influence the story through a vote is a bad idea.
@praxicoide
@praxicoide 9 жыл бұрын
I guess it's all up to personal opinion, but Denny O'Neal wasn't happy with it and he wrote that he thought a lot of people voted for Jason to get nixed just to see if DC would do it. If the writers wanted to off hm, then they should. You can get a feel of it without calling an actual vote, which is contingent anyways. The end result isn't that bad. Instead of a smarmy 80s edgy Robin, we got a 90s geeky Robin, but at that time, well, dot dot dot

Personally I think Knightfall would be a better fit than A Death in the Family. Knightfall is that story where Bruce Wayne is replaced by a guy that turns out to be a PSYCHOTIC KILLER!!!!
@praxicoide
@praxicoide 9 жыл бұрын
Could be, but that was on purpose. It was the edgy 90s and they thought that a good route for the character to not get classified as antiquated is to give readers an Image-type psycho killer and then have everyone hate him. Obviously it was a commercial ploy too, like the Death of Superman or Emerald Twilight. It gave us Bane, in any case, but it was really gut-wrenching at times, like when Bruce was tossed from the top of Gotham's version of Times Square.

Emerald twilight would be a perfect elseworlds story, but it destroys hal's character. They punished him for recreating coast city! Why? He's mourning. The guardians understand emotion right? They even let John Stewart marry another green lantern, so why not let Hal mourn for his city? Other than that, the story is epic, but works better in an alternate universe.

This Narrator is either reading out loud someone else's (unknowledged) amateur opinion. Or its A Voice-over resume thing for like A radio job. No knowledged DC fan could possibly pronounce so many nouns incorrectly. & Btw James's Robinson's - JL "Cry for Justice" limited series, was supposed to be Dark. Its in the Wake of A (somewhat questionable) Crisis. How can you be turned off by The ATOM (Ray Palmer) torchering Ol'school villains; by going inside their head & jumping. *& the only characters killed were ancillary one's at best. DC stood to gain more stories in their absence.*
@5foldunderstanding547
@5foldunderstanding547 10 жыл бұрын
***** First off. One could argue (& win the argúment) simply by stating: Robinson's "JL. Cry for Justice" is A good noteworthy story because its almost A decade later & were still talking about it.. Seriously.. *-People don't talk about "Bad Storys" at all, let alone in excess 8yrs or whatever later.* Ask yourself. How dangerously concerning is A villain; who never does anything evil enough to emotionally affect our HERO & the reader's emotional PoV. Hmmmmm.... Especially too long-time readers who follow the continual DC universe & its progressive evolution. Alot of us are sick of 'the same old silver-age song & dance' (which today costs alot more & usually has no payoff). So- *Robinson upped the ante. He took Prometheus & made him threatening.* A perfectly believable modern Villian. Who's been there, done that. In A very short time period (one could argue Prometheus's storys has ran its course). *Robinson used all of which beautifully, in the wake of A Crisis. By using A classic Dark "eye for an eye" template with some of America's favorite characters. & If we both agree the little girl is an ancillary character, well than; who cares about her future?* DC stood more to gain in the wake of her catastrophic death, than they did watching her grow-- into yet ANOTHER archer. As fot Roy Harper (Speedy/Arsenal/ Red- blah) you call "an anti-hero" which is colloquially ubiquitous, synonymous hyperbole & A mute point. DC was trying to make us care about All the branches which stem frm the GrnArrow (i believe the 8th member of the JLoA) tree. Which validates his blackhearted quest for vengance. It All makes sense with the sepration of League, interior "Family troubles" on multiple levels. *I don't get- what you (or whoever) doesn't get about A solid Dark Story. That makes perfect "real-Superworld" sense in the wake of A Crisis. It was beautifully drawn. Something new for Oldschool DC fans, that was also absent of the "Big 3". All the more kudos for "Cry For Justice" A dark thrilling (rare) emotional read.*

I feel Emerald Twilight was one of the more memorable stories of the DC universe. Sure it wasn’t “kid friendly”, but it was the first time in my young life that I witnessed a hero became evil - a valuable narrative lesson, but more importantly a brilliant, unexpected end to a much beloved character. Hal Jordan then became The Spectre which I thought was a stroke of genius. I find modern comic book writers don’t take anywhere near the same risks as they did here. I also believe Identity Crisis was again an unexpected but brilliantly written story that evolved the universe in a much needed way by giving depths to otherwise clichéd, dare I say interchangeable, characters and killing off somewhat boring heroes who were all brought back to life in some way not long after. When will you do the top 10 best moments in DC comics?

whoa whoa whoa, Identity Crisis is one of the worst moments in DC History? since when? That was a good book. It goes without saying that what happened to Sue Dibny and Tim Drakes' Dad was messed up and sad but the story was really entertaining. It brought a lot of stuff to the table like how these superheroes are able to keep their families safe, what happens when a villain discovers one of their identities which happens fairly often, and makes the Dibnys one of the sweetest and tragic couples in DC. And Ralph Dibny can then go on and become a detective maybe even better than Batman in the "52" yearly event

Paul Cipollini Identity Crisis isn't well liked because it turned the Justice League International book which was the fun, light-hearted superhero team and they made it the backdrop of a brutal rape that only existed because it was retconned in as having happened but having been covered up. Sue wasn't shown dealing with the rape since it was only shown as something her friends were sweeping under the rug by wiping Dr. Light's mind (and possibly Sue's since I honestly find it hard to buy that it would never come up in the history if it was something she had happen to her years ago, and I can't possible imagine that Sue would be anywhere near okay with Dr. Light going free even if he was mind altered to be a simpleton). Besides that the Dibnys were always a fun and happy couple so making them have such tragedy was ill-fitting and seemed to cruel just for the sake of being cruel just to try to be dark. Not to mention the fact that they killed her in a really over-the-top circumstance. It's not enough that she's murdered horrifically but Ralph finds out after she's dead that she was about to say she's pregnant and this all occurred on their wedding anniversary. Besides that Jean Loring's motivation was bullshit, she broke up with Ray Palmer! Not the other way around so making her do it all because she wanted him to notice her and go back to her is so non-sensical that even if we go with the "well she went insane" excuse. And Tim's dad getting killed bugs me because I liked that Tim was different from the other Robins since he had a living biological parent.

Nightman221k ok, for me it was different. A murder mystery / thriller story that was something new. And it addressed these characters home lives / secret identities. Yes it was dark but Im not the type of person that freaks out because one writers story changes something. I think people should take arcs like stories a writer wants to tell that are in a preexisting universe. Im ok with a writer trying to tell a different story or try a different way of telling a story. If it doesnt work or changes things about characters that I dont like then I stop reading or just forget about it. That story specifically I never heard of the Dibny's before that. After Identity Crisis & 52, Ralph & Sue were one of my favorite couples

Paul Cipollini If you like Ralph and Sue Dibny I'd highly recommend the Gerald Jones, Mike Parobeck, and Ty Templeton Elongated Man series, it's incredibly fun and entertaining with fantastic art by Mike Parobeck. And I actually will agree with you on the fact that when I read story arcs and I care more about the story than continuity in most cases. If the story is great, then its easy to look past the changes and appreciate the writing. But if they are just doing mean-spirited stuff for the sake of it to be edgy and the changes deeply affect character's histories (the whole mind-wiping thing with Dr. Light) it just seems too hard a ill to swallow. And I don't get offput by things being really dark if it works. I've liked the many dark twisted Batman stories over the years, but it just feels off to inject something as twisted as that into the lives of characters who never had any hints of it prior (Zatanna, Jean Loring, Sue, Ralph, etc.) and it almost seems like it wanted to try and be Watchmen only that it was using pre-established characters whose histories just didn't work for a story like this.

TopTenz British Guy was a British Guy who narrates for Top 10's, however for some bizarre reason he was programmed with the corpse of a Dark Seed, because of this he was unable to say 'Boy Wonder; but 'Wonder Boy' an awful lot. The corpse of the Dark Seed could not be removed and he kept miss-pronouncing words forever. For those who want to know; Green Lantern Corps (pronounced core) and Darkseid (pronounced Dark Side).

The New 52 is controversial as well, but it's not unprecedented at all. The DC's continuity system has been one of "Crisis Reboots" for decades. Honestly, it's a ton more palatable to me than Marvel's "rolling continuity"... which basically says anything the editorial staff wants not to have happened hasn't happened... but if we want to use something from 40 years ago that would normally completely destroy continuity... we will. And then we'll explain it away by making the story not have existed if it wasn't popular. One basically throws past comics in the trash. The other keeps all of them, but only really in a rather mean spirited fashion.

@shoutenry
@shoutenry 10 жыл бұрын
roar91328 They don't actually sell much better... the market share has been in dc's favor for quite a few months now... Marvel's art style has more variety but less consistency. DC's house style of art is more consistent but less varied. The numbering via storytelling is also different in that Marvel restarts the numbering for comic lines for each story arc while DC only does so if a line sells poorly, is cancelled, and requires resurrecting. A la Teen Titans/Suicide Squad. Honestly, as a reader of both sides... DC currently has an edge. The complete mixture and time paradoxing going around with the Avengers + X-Men lines as well as the basic death of the Ultimates line have really put Marvel on a rather ugly track that they're going to need to finish out of and then retcon hard... But you don't actually care because I'm rather sure you probably haven't ever even read more than a few dozen comics outside Marvel and DC in your life... There is no competition. Get over yourself. Good comics are good comics and bad comics are bad comics. Doesn't matter who's selling them.

for quite a few months huh you realize for almost ten years prior to new 52 marvel was beating out dc in everything but batman comics right. my point is valid if your too much of a fanboy to accept it then fine but the only reason publicity stunts like the new justice league comics are profitable is because people like seeing heroes fighting heroes. the truth of the matter is dc needed to be revamped but the new 52 didnt revamp it they destroyed decades of continuity cause geoff johns didnt like it.

I don't think he necessarily out willed Green Lantern though at that close a proximity and the fact that he would have plenty of will power himself he very well could have. As Justice League War says the ring works on willpower and concentration, Kyle initially couldn't concentrate while Deathstroke was crushing his hand. The book even says it was the 1 fight Deathstroke was unsure of and I think it implies he was buckling before Green Arrow stabbed him in the eye and if he was, Kyle was probably fighting through the pain and regaining his concentration.

You may call it "mean spirited", but I think it was good storytelling...and it did address the problem of how heroes keep their identities from being discovered (or broadcast.) The villain mind-wiping seems a smart thing to do and - yes - it is a slippery slope to abuse. I also like the idea that they changed Doctor Light to a 3rd tier villain to use as a punching bag to help train the Teen Titans.

Unless the script read COPRSE instead of CORPS (which is ridiculous), he read the word wrong. Also, "proper English" doesn't matter when it comes to proper nouns, such as the name of a state (Arkansas). If it helps, I am not American, and I doubt you speak proper English, seeing as how your grammar is horrible.
