The whole point of the village’s twist is that the elders were afraid of passion, which red is the embodiment of. They just had an elaborate plan to try to create their own perfect world because they were scared of what the real one had to offer. I think it was a genius take on a parent’s worst fear.

@thesprawl23615 жыл бұрын
@@ecszst.croixe3573 The Now You See Me movies are quite literally the most ridiculous films I've ever seen. The Prestige is excellent though, with a clever sub-twist that hinges on quantum suicide and a whole bunch of out-there metaphysical premises. The main twist is a bit daft, but the film as a whole is pretty riveting.
@thesprawl23615 жыл бұрын
Now You See Me is a hilarious franchise. I watched both of them with my jaw open, asking myself how something so ridiculous ever got made. They really are two of the dumbest films ever made. And they did give reasons. I thought the Iron Man 3 twist was quite clever though. I don't give a shit about comics so I wasn't outraged like some fanboys were - I just thought it was funny. Besides, the main reason they did that twist is because the real Mandarin is this racist Chinese caricature from the sixties. They couldn't include him as he is in the comic books, there'd have been uproar..

@LordHypnos49 жыл бұрын
Megan Talley Unpredictable is only good when there is a logical connection between the build up and the twist. The twist had absolutely nothing to do with what transpired in the movie at all, the only connection was a monster that would have been far more interesting had it turned out to be real. It was just flat out ridiculous, and at that point in Shyamalan's career it is par for the course that his movies would have a twist. I expected the unexpected when I saw that movie in theaters and it completely disappointed me that there was no actual threat in the woods. And in 40-50 years of living in seclusion I'm supposed to believe there were no outside influences coming in from the outside? No one decided to look into this wildlife preserve or maintain it in decades? Come on it doesn't make any sense. Lol if you couldn't tell I really didn't like this movie
@meganwright97639 жыл бұрын
Matt Schilling I disagree. The 'threat' was humanity. How close-minded, isolated,intolerant, and illogical people can become if put in the right situation. The power of leaders to delude a group of people is very real. I understand that if you were anticipating a horror movie with a climax that fit in the horror genre, you were rightly disappointed. But once I looked at the movie as a take on human nature, I loved it.

Part of the problem for The Village is that it was the movie that made M. Knight's reputation for plot twists. He'd done movies before, and there were twists, but people didn't really realize it was a pattern until then. Secondly, the twist itself is stupid - the rest of the movie may be fine and good, but it'd be better *without* the twist, or at least a different twist.

4. The Village. Woah-woah-woah. I actually thought that was a pretty good twist. Elders dressing up as monsters = Scooby Doo? Nah. I think that is way oversimplification. There was a reason as to why they were doing that, to keep people from leaving the settlement. A story to make them understand why they had to stay there. The story went that the monsters felt that they owned the woods, and so a treaty was formed: "you guys stay in your clearing, the tree line is the border, don't cross it and we'll be good." The elders fabricated the whole thing to keep everyone safe, indirectly, from the dystopian, crime-infested outside world. Too harsh Mojo, too harsh, says I.

GasCityGuy Please explain. Seemed pretty literal to me.
@LightWthoutTheStatic9 жыл бұрын
Michael Woods Like GasCityGuy said "I think a lot of people miss the whole point of it". That's you missing it. The monsters were 'people in suits' all along. The audience doesn't know what they are. The twist isn't that 'it's people in suits' (but that is a surprising thing in a way, to some). The twist is 'whether or not the monster is real'. Metaphorically, the monster is still very real, but it's in her mind. It's not a real monster, but it's terrifying her just as much as a real one would. Ivy KNEW they weren't real because now that's what she's been told, but she's blind and her experience is still terrifying her. It might have been worse if she could have seen the creature. I think people who like the movie are more interested in how Ivy deals with the fear and the question of whether or not the monster is real. That's the real twist (not the fact of the matter, but how the metaphor plays out).
@michaelw37159 жыл бұрын
I guess it comes down to how you interpret the movie and what you think the plot twist is. I don't think the plot twist had anything to do with whether or not the monsters were real but that the movie takes place in present time when we as the audience assume that this took place in the past. How is this not completely obvious to you? Don't read too much into things.
@mingusboodle9 жыл бұрын
scifiNotSyfyFan I don't even think of 'The Village' as a plot twist. The big point of 'The Village' is that the girl grew up believing in monsters, and can't shake that belief even when she's given proof that they're fake. Like "Signs," it's a movie about faith, not about monsters. Unfortunately, it was marketed as a monster movie, directed by the guy who brought you Sixth Sense... Good movie ruined by bad expectations.

So the ide that the best weapon earth had against a powerful alien race was microbes was amazing. Fast forward 100 years and we know so much more, and we aren't even making colonies on moon! A race that advanced as we see in the later remake would have had multiple constant updates on data collected over1000s of years. Data analysing atmospheric changes, pollution from the technological inhabitants, and studies on flora and fauna. Even if a small landing party was to conduct an investigation prior to the main attack, the martians would have become ick and the bodies examined in quarantine. So the concept was great in the original setting, illogical in the 21st century.

I think Remember Me’s twist was incredible. A lot of people rag on it, but from the perspective of someone who has no memory of the events of 9/11, I think it was really a well handled surprising twist that puts you in the shoes of everyone who felt that heartbreak. I was too young to remember it, and didn’t know anyone who died in it, but for a brief minute after that movie I could feel the pain of characters I came to know experiencing that day in real time. I pay my respect and shed tears for everyone who died, but learning more about an individual really sticks with you and makes it all the more real. Even if it is fiction. Idk, I don’t think it was some cop out to end a romantic movie, I think it is exactly what it set out to be.

I feel like that ending was more effective at striking an emotional chord with audiences than, say, him getting hit by a car or killed in an attempted mugging gone wrong. The twist in Signs is actually genius if you look at it from a religiously thematic point of view. Im not religious, but the movie has a lot of religious symbolism. Mel Gibson's character is a fallen pastor, and the aliens represent demons. Everyone fears them and they are hardly ever seen. The daughter represents and angel and is even described as looking like one in the film. The water represents holy water, and when splashed upon the aliens it burns them. After the demons are destroyed, (fighting your inner demons if you will) he regains his faith and becomes a pastor again. Im not religious, but this is definitely a film with deeper interesting meaning.

'Remember Me', for me, was a shocking plot twist, because it just seems like a typical Romance, but with the last scene, I took it as the movie trying to show that the victims and their loved ones had lives of their own and no matter what they were, 9/11 completely changed that and the suddenness of the last scene kinda mirrored how it felt in reality.

@realafah9 жыл бұрын
I agree with most of these, but I do disagree with the movie 'Signs'. It wasn't a surprise that their weakness was water because it was said earlier when the Father went to visit the guy who accidentally killed his wife. He told him that the aliens were afraid of water and that people were moving to lakes and oceans to be safe, the Father also brought it up to his family later to help decide whether to stay or go. I know that aliens are suppose to have superior intellect, but their knowledge can only go as far as their planet's and the other planets they have invaded. Their planet most likely doesn't even have water which is why they never thought of the fact it could hurt them. It's like in the movie 'Independence Day', people were mad that the aliens were superior in every way, but were taken down by a simple little virus, but their planet most likely never encountered a virus so they didn't know what to do about it nor did they have time to do anything because they didn't notice it until the last few minutes they were alive. I mean, when we were first introduced to viruses we didn't know what to do either at first. Anyway, that's just my opinion.

realafah Rea! Dude, you're my favorite KZbinr! :D
@Xylarxcode9 жыл бұрын
realafah When it comes to Signs, the way I think about is like this. The alien invaders are either political refugees or the last survivors of their race. Whichever they are, they can no longer go to their own homeplanet. So they wander the galaxy, in search of a new planet they can inhabit. Resources are running scarce and they're slowly dying in their spaceships when lo and behold, they stumble upon Earth, a planet that looks like it could support them. Because of the urgency of their plight, they don't have time to properly investigate the planet, so they quickly jot down a few navigational markers (the crop signs) and come down to Earth to check things out. The first thing they quickly realize is that this planet is already inhabited by us. The second thing they realize is that this planet is covered in a material that is deadly to them, namely water. Although they are more then a match for any single human in a 1 on 1 confrontation, they are vastly outnumbered and any human can get a hold of some water. That stuff is literally everywhere. There are days when it won't stop falling out of the sky. They can't stay on our planet because we would kill them if they did. So they have no choice but to pack up and leave.
@Saikanix9 жыл бұрын
This is the most ridiculous reasoning I've ever heard. It is both surprising and nonsensical that their weakness was water because there is literally water in the atmosphere, if they're weak to water, they would be burning to death just by standing around. And this is with humoring the idea that an advanced species would be weak to something like water, something that every biological life requires.
@QBFOJustin9 жыл бұрын
Nathan Mabie only problem with this is that, yes, every biological thing requires water, but, what if these aliens were the exception? What if one had been captured and examined and it indeed is factual that they don't require water? As far as they being unable to stand in the atmosphere, what if it's the concentration level of that water that harms them? Not so much that they're bothered by minor levels but a full on hit from water, like the glass falling on them, was too strong. Like, I could be dying of thirst, but I can't just open my mouth and satisfy myself by the minuscule water vapors in the air. I think there is a way to reason it out if one is willing to do so, but if one is too close minded to a fiction movie to allow themselves to understand things, then, I guess it won't be understood.

@janacebickerstaff86036 жыл бұрын
Okay, what made you assume that Mark Ruffalo's character had acted like an idiot his whole FBI career? I mean, he's the one smart enough to find these horsemen and bring them together while also harboring a plot for revenge, and he actually gets the guy who was responsible for his father's death right? So I would think that the entire time the Horsemen are involved he simply acts ignorant so they (and the audience) simply won't suspect him as more than what he's acting like - an FBI agent. He's probably pretty intelligent, and had no problem with work beforehand, which only builds on the idea that he wants to catch these guys so badly because he doesn't fail, which in turn helps cement his persona, which makes the twist all the more surprising. I honestly didn't think the concept was hard to grasp, it's not supposed to be. It's the art of misdirection, applied to the audience for the entire movie. So it actually seems like a great twist to me, but some people don't think critically about such things And shut up you uncultured hipster swine, M. I kind of have to argue against the twilight one...I'm not saying they're great movies, but the whole twist was done because a lot of people were pissed that there wasn't a fight at the end of the book, so the whole vision thing was a way for them to give people the ending they wanted without really being untrue to the book since it ultimately ends the same

Mustache monocle By that logic, War of the Worlds shouldnt belong there either. I believe that if there's a film of it, and that film has a twist, and that twist was confusing or otherwise unsatisfactory, then the film (in this case, Alice in Wonderland) is worthy of being on this list. regarding the original post, i feel that the ending was satisfactory to some degree. to a psychologist, they might watch the film and say "now why is it so zany? ah, of course! it's because this is all the workings of the subconscious mind!" -- i think this is the justification/premise used for darker Alice media, such as a video game that came out a few years ago.

The Village was awesome and the twist had me. Signs is one of my all time favorites. If you follow from the beginning the daughter had a thing for water and would leave glasses of water all over the house. It was a part of the plot that the aliens were affected adversely by it. Call me crazy but i liked the twist to The Village. Also, while I've only seen bits and pieces of the Twilight movies (I've yet to sit through an entire one) I Have caught the end ending of the final film and I thought it was a pretty good way to inject some... SOMETHING into the movie without drastically changing the ending. You said it yourself, "...the coolest scene in the franchise." Would the movie have been better off without it? How can something that arguably makes a movie better be considered a bad thing?

Your honorable mentions included war of the worlds a classic piece of literature written by H.G. Wells one of the greatest sci fi writters of all time. @theblueishballs63246 жыл бұрын
People being disappointed by The Village plot twist missed the point of the movie. The erroneous marketing was the culprit. It isn't a horror or thriller movie. It's actually a fable and a love story. The suspense is there to support the fairytale like quality of the film (after all the original fairy tales were dark and twisted) and highlight how difficult it must be for Ivy to cross the forest, even if she logically now knows the monsters aren't real - showing the depths of her love for Lucius. Brilliant cinematography and score.

My real problem with the village is the timing of the twist, it's revealed way way too fucking soon. Before the final confrontation with the "monster" they reveal it's just costumes thus completely murdering the enormous tension the scene could have had, because yes, those monster were super scary when you didn't know wtf they were. Makes no sense, why would the movie spoil it's own climax like that
@TheYaddayadda6 жыл бұрын
"Love Conquers All" is the message we are to experience by Ivy's story, and I used to think it was the deepest message of the movie. But now I think that Edward's story is really the heart of hearts. I think the deepest message here is this: The Elders thought they could remove evil from their lives by removing themselves from the world. But evil followed them. Because the only true monsters, the only real evil, is within us all. The evil which lives within all of us, right along side the good.
@brucethedruid5 жыл бұрын
@@chiyo-chanholocaust8143 because that's not the ultimate climax or reveal. This story has a series of climaxes. Think of a camera focusing on one small part of a picture. Slowly the camera zooms out, revealing more and more details of the picture. There would be a series of "aha" moments.

Sir Ben Kingsley as the fake terrorist was absolutely brilliant, and he played it superbly. And super hero movies shouldn't take themselves so seriously. It's tiresome when everyone is being so serious, like it's some great melodrama. I also think the twist that bacteria wipes out the invading aliens a great plot twist. And it is worth noting that this plot twist is as the original novel, so it dates back to H. G. Wells in 1897.
@chrisrudolf98398 жыл бұрын
Couldn't agree more, they are insulting a real classic by putting that one on the list. In contrast to the dumb and biologically inexplicably strong weakness of the "signs"-Aliens to water the weakness to bacteria from a totally different ecosystem your own immune system has never encountered before is very realistic. It has happened in history with quite a few native American tribes upon first contact with European germs brought by the white man.

The Sixth Sense was a lucky fluke, and he tried to recapture the thunder by giving everything a twist ending, as if that's all there was to it. Awww the fact that monsters in the Village aren't real got people disappointed? I mean seriously, the Village is so brilliant, you really have to be shallow not to see that. It's a movie where a very present truth is masked by a supernatural element. A forced tradition and idealism. Fear used as a weapon. I didn't like Now You See Me ending because it made no damn sense in terms of character drives. Nothing the Inspector did made any sense in the context that he was the puppetmaster behind it all. It was way too big a leap for my suspension of disbelief for him to act the way he did in the movie and that's what ruined it for me. Also they sorta hinted that *maybe* there was more *magic* going on than just smoke and mirrors. Except, they never explained anything. You just have to accept that *somehow* they accomplished impossible feats because "wow cool magic effect".... Just.... There is only so much suspension of disbelief that a movie can expect of it's audience.
