The character are actors who are living out a real life action adventure, but in their minds they're still just on a 1920's movie studio set, so THAT's why it looks the way it does. I think the creators of The Three Amigos were purposely going for a fake background in that scene. So being that it was on purpose, it's not needed on this Worst Movie Sets list. Same can be said about The Princess Bride. It's supposed to look like a fake or fantasy world.

Some Of These Choices On The List Are Absolutely Ridiculous And Are Actually Fine Sets Like Planet Phados, I Assure You Those Mountains When They First Arrive Are Definitely Real. I Admit Some Of Phados Is CGI And Set Built But It Does Not Look Ridiculous Whatsoever Also Like They Said Jim Henson Was A Genius So In My Opinion, Movies Like Labyrinth Or Dark Crystal Are Of Limits As They Are Meant To Be Weird. And Skeletor's Throne Room Was A Majestic Set. And Even Though They Weren't On The List The Sets From Indiana Jones 4 And Scooby-Doo Didn't Look Bad At All. The Only Thing I Will Admit Is That The Desert Sunset From 3 Amigos Did Look Corny BUT It Was Meant To Be Corny That's What Makes That Scene So Good.

i haven't seen masters of the universe in a while, but i remember sksletor's throne room being in castle greryskull, which he invaded, and the film takes place over a couple of days, not too much time for redecorating

As for third entry, that's not Skeletor's throne room we see in the movie. It's castle Greyskull and therefore it's throne room of Sorceress. Snakemountain won't even appear in the movie.

Dance Magic was awesome. Dance is that way we all hang onto our childhood, and the movie was all about growing up, but letting go of the magic of childhood.

Also, "Masters of the Universe" are quite impressively made on it's budget, has a cult following and inspired Bryan Singer on his stylistic approach on "X-Men".

That was not Skeletor's throne room, that was the Sorceress'. She resides in Castle Greyskull, whereas Skeletor rules Snake Mountain. I thought you guys would have done a little bit more research.

In regards, to the Labyrinth's throne room it did look dark and gloomy, however it could have been glorified like the throne room in Legend. And David Bowie's random singing is to cheer up the child as the child was crying.

the throne room was only a shell that had dozens of puppeteers around the entire outer shell so it couldn't be terribly detailed. also magic dance is one of the best songs on the soundtrack.

I like how in the Power Rangers segment, the host mispronounces the planet's name, then in the clip right after, the planet's name is used, then 20 seconds later, they do the exact same thing again! Does anyone at WatchMojo check these videos before they upload them?

The Three Amigos' sets were supposed to be stupidly unrealistic to make the movie even funnier, and they did succeed, because they were aiming for a 'movie set' as the Three Amigos were movie actors in the movie. It was still hilarious. But trust me, I absolutely noticed it right away.

Come on, the set design of the Three Amigos was amazing! Yes, many were horribly fake, but the idea that the main characters are classic Hollywood actors from a place that defined set-making in the day of the story's setting simply adds to the amazingness of the design of that movie!

The movie Cool World. They didn't bother to green screen in the actors with the animated backgrounds a lot of the time, and instead painted similar backgrounds on to cardboard and had the actors walk around on a sound stage... Compared to the toon town scenes from Who Framed Roger Rabbit, who actually did green (or blue?) screen in the actor pretty well.

#3: That wasn't Skeletor's throne room, that was Castle Greyskull. He took it over in the beginning of the movie and took the queen captive. That's why it had the pedestal for the sword and that's why it looked vaguely sci-fi. It wasn't supposed to be terrifying.

The throne room in which you see Skeletor in the Masters of the Universe movie is actually CASTLE GRAYSKULL'S throne room, not his. The movie begins with Skeletor having taken over Grayskull, so it's in Grayskull's throne room in which we see him; we never do get to see Snake Mountain in this film. I agree with your assessment of the quality of the set (the whole movie, for that matter), but it might be hard for people familiar with the Masters of the Universe franchise to take you seriously if you can't get such a basic fact right...

I would like to nominate Wind Talkers. Beginning scene of Nicolas Cage's character in a foggy battle scene did not sell me at all. The fog just appeared that they were to lazy to make a real set. Also the battle scenes later hardly looked like a tropical Pacific island but like arid southern California.

Sets in fantasy films or fantasy-related scenes are sometimes designed to be stylized rather than naturalistic, for effect. This enhances the fantasy style of what's going on in the film. There's no point dissing Princess Bride or Labyrinth or that scene in Three Amigos, for example. The sets look precisely as is called for by the film, and they work beautifully, as in Dick Tracy or New York, New York, for example. They're miles away from the ineptness of something like The Room. Looking "real" is not the only purpose of a film set.

You went back to '59 for "Plan 9",but you didn't include "The Silver Chalice"(1954)? Notable mostly for being the screen debut of Paul Newman,this movie,despite being a major Hollywood production,chose to represent ancient Jerusalem and Rome through some ridiculously stylized sets that didn't look the least bit real. When it first aired on TV,Newman took out a full-page ad in newspapers,imploring people not to watch it....all that succeeded in doing was making people curious about it,and....well,I think you can guess the rest.

Two issues: - Why point out that the Three Amigos sunset set is an obvious parody of similar scenes, why put it on the list? It was obviously made to look incredibly fake. -Scooby Doo's island setting and outdoor sets were pretty much the best things about the movie. I don't know why it got an HM.

I like a lot of things about Dino de Laurentiis' 1976 King Kong remake, but the Skull Island miniature sets are absolutely craptacular. The mini oil tanker set is very good and most of the NYC sets fare okay, but the miniature Shea Stadium is pretty cheesy and the blinking "KONG" signs don't even match up to the ones on the live set.
