Every state in the union is like this. Its easy for someone to mock and make fun of places when that person has never been here. I have lived here in PA all my life. I have been to 6 continents around the world, there is nothing wrong here that can't be fixed. Move somewhere else you will have the same problem, you don't help out with your community, you are part of the problem. You should be happy living here, there are places so much worse.

The towns you mentioned, for the most part, are victims of the collapsed steel industry. Bigger cities were able to get government funding to help them get back on their feet even though many still struggle today. The little suburbs where the steel workers lived were left on their own to rot in the dust. We have only ourselves to thank for this because we stopped buying American steel and bought from foreign companies. You get what you pay for and it has come to bit us in the ass. I live in Pennsylvania and am proud of our state. Our mountains are beautiful and where I live I can tell you my neighbors names for miles down the road and throughout the nearby counties. Just wondering, can you do that?

The difference between a "state" and a "commonwealth" is that a "commonwealth" got it's charter to exist from the King of England *before* the US existed. There are four (4) commonwealths in the US: Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Kentucky. All of these existed *before* the US existed. (Obviously the education system in this country has gone down the drain.) As far as Upper Darby is concerned, I used to live there and left in 1998. When I was coming home from work one day, I was stopped by a cop while I was about 1/2 block away from my house and, perplexed, I asked him why I couldn't go down that street since it was on my way to my house. He told me (and I quote) "there a PIPE BOMB" in the middle of the street. That's when I knew it was time to leave. Never regretted it.

Kentucky did not exist until 1792. Before then it was part of Virginia. And all 13 colonies got their charters from the King of England before the revolution. Georgia became the last colony, a Royal colony, in 1752 but isn’t a commonwealth. Maryland was a colony 50 years before Pennsylvania but is not a commonwealth. So 10 of 13 colonies given charters before 1752 are NOT commonwealths and 1 of 4 commonwealths never got a charter from the king. Education is failing.

I was born and raised in Darby and my family still lives and goes to school there now. I never knew it is was in the top 10 most dangerous towns until like last year. It is very small (literally like 6 by 7 blocks) you can walk through it in like 20 minutes. The funny thing is now we live in Sharon Hill. Maybe its because I've aways lived on the good blocks but I never knew about the dangerous stuff going on, the most I here about is kids fighting at school, the creek flooding, and recently they did construction on the mcdonalds. I know its not perfect, but it has a place in my heart.

I have lived in Pennsylvania my whole life ,owned 3 businesses, owned land and many properties! Im 53! I can’t wait to get the truck out of here! Ok here we go! The weather is horrible here it’s cloudy ,cold and rainy November till June! The weather is just horrible! Rain at Christmas ,snow at Halloween , freezing thanksgivings, rain and snow at Easter, spring break in March is a disaster! Again snow and usually fridge temperatures! Don’t even think of buying a sports car or a convertible here ! You won’t get a to drive it here because the weather is so bad! Some years I put 300 miles on my corvette because the weather is so bad! In April and May you usually get one nice day a week and you spend it cutting grass due to all the rain! Also you will need an all wheel drive car or a 4x4 which are outrageous in price ! Pennsylvania also rewards you with one of the highest gas prices in the country ! Your awd car and gas guzzling 4x4 will surely put a dent in your wallet every week! Not to mention the heating oil cost which are tragically high like the gasoline to crush your wallet all winter! ! Home taxes are soaring, factories and major industries are leaving in droves! There’s no work for the uneducated and no public transportation in most of the state! The kids are in school every month of the year except July! Sorta like the hitler youth! The teachers tell the kids they can be president the baker the candlestick maker! The truth is it’s illegal to sell lemonade! The state will send armed police after 7 year old little girls at there lemonade stand! They demand upgrades to downtown buildings, when new businesses want to open up ! That are financially unfiesable ! There just isn’t enough customers ,or the town is to small as to financially support all the updates the government demands! There for if your not a corporation like McDonald’s or Walmart you won’t be allowed to open a business! And if you do open up they will make your life miserable harass you and your customers the same way the nazis did to the Jewish owned businesses in the 40s ! I witnessed it in all 3 of my businesses! In fact if I was on tv Americans would shit there pants with the stories I could tell of corrupt politicians and police! The legal system is so corrupt it makes North Korea look like paradise! They inspect your car , your home ,your kids ,and even your body! That’s right your body! You are physically checked for almost every job even your blood and nuts are checked! They have a cop for everything! A code officer for your grass, liquor control agents when you have a drink it’s worse than Nazi germany! Infact they stop you armed with guns and interrogate you! Ask you where your going , where you were coming from , they accuse you of breaking crimes you didn’t do! It’s like Nazi germany all over again! It’s horrible here ! ! ! ! ! There is no night life , the bars and grills are closing in droves they even lock up the play ground on the kids! Some towns lock up the playgrounds all winter ! My god Pennsylvania is satins paradise! Satin has to have a second home somewhere and Pennsylvania is it ! ! !

There are a bunch of depressed towns in Pennsylvania, like Bangor, Palmerton or Pen Argyl, and the list goes on and on. But despite them being economically depressed, most are very, very safe. Yes, the unemployment may be high, and many may be living on some form of assistance, but you can walk the streets at night, or leave you car or home unlocked. The job markets may be poor, but what isn't poor is a sense and respect of family, community and your neighbor, you know, the kind of things that money can't buy. I know, I grew up in one of these dirt poor Pennsylvania towns.

My Husband and I love a good road trip and PA is a great State to road trip, travelled to northwestern Pennsylvania for vacation to support as many small businesses as possible and then spent along weekend three weeks later in Bedford to do the same. I also pay taxes in two PA Counties, Lancaster and Sullivan, ironically one of the most prosperous and one of the poorest, but Sullivan County is very beautiful, home to World's End State Park as well as part of Rickett's Glen State Park.

OMG! I knew my town of Clearfield was horrible! Too bad I'm stuck here. I totally fit the bill of poverty. And My rent is more than half of my monthly income!!!!! Bringing the methadone clinic here made it even worse! The crime dealing with drugs and domestic violence is absurd!! My mom grew up here back when it was THE best time to live. She always tells me, you would have loved this town back in my day! We had four theaters in town! There was always things to do too! About the most you can do here now is go to the bar and get drunk. There's one practically every street corner! I would rather live in State College! Better everything including health care! It's so bad here, that doctor's in the ER automatically assume you're looking for narcotics!!! Pretty effing sad. DuBois is just as bad if not worse in some aspects. I'm shocked it was only # 7 on the top ten.

I was born and raised in Clfd, in fact, at 4:35 you can see my childhood home to the left of the bridge. In 2011, Judge Fred Ammerman gave custody of my elderly father to the agency on aging because Dad never signed a POA. The agency dumped him in a nursing home where he languished for 5 years. The state turned a deaf ear to my pleas for guardianship (I am an RN and my spouse is a hospice chaplain) They totally drained his funds and the home has been subsequently charged with Medicare fraud. Clfd is corrupt to the core, even though it has great bike paths and nearby state parks. The weather stinks most of the year, and Gov Wolf's response to covid is draconian. Needless to say, I live out of state.

Actually Steelton was one of the largest producers of steel (ie the name) for the railroads in the US ever. Bethlehem steel had a huge plant there and Steelton used to be a sought after place to live. When the steel plant shut down, people moved to Harrisburg or Middletown and Middleton then decided cut off some of the main roads by having construction last so long it was difficult to get there. Most of the people who live there now sadly are section 8 or retires living their last days. The reason drugs are so Bad is because Harrisburg refuses to patrol that side of their city and never go past Paxton street. I’m talking a few miles of Harrisburg blocks NEVER see the police. Blame former mayor Reid for that one. And seriously Minersville or Reading are WAY worse. Way.

You need to add Ashland to this list! It's not far from Shamokin and just as awesome. Drugs and drug dealers run rampant, no jobs, fires seem to break out around town every other month burning houses and businesses to the ground. The whole town looks run down and creepy. I'm not sure what the median home price is but I'm guessing it isn't much and the median income isn't much either. It's sad. Cool fact - Centralia is about three miles from Ashland. If you ever get the chance, check it out. There isn't much to it anymore but graffiti highway is pretty cool to check out.

It's really sad because I grew up in these areas and when I was a kid Shamokin and Sunbury were still quite busy and bustling. It seems like when the clothing factories shut down, the entire area went into a downward spiral. I can't even drive through Shamokin anymore because I end up feeling depressed, with downtown being so dead and most of the houses looking so run-down. As for Sunbury, I think the only thing that gives it a spark of activity is the courthouse being there; otherwise it too would be as dead as the proverbial door-nail.

In hits heyday one of the greatest steel production and rolling plants in the USA. In fact, all the steel for the Golden State Bridge was made in the Steelton plant. It was a town of east European and Slovakian immigrants. Still, back then you still knew you were in the US. We only spoke English in public or not at all. A problem with these run-down PA steel towns is that they don't tear down their old, dilapidated buildings, which makes the towns look even worse.

Sharon Hills, paying high rent to live in a crime ridden ghetto! That makes sense.

Sharon Hill isnt really a terrible place.. Im from NY & I pass by there alot.. Not a top tier place but I feel safe there.. Darby in my eyes is far worse.. Sharon Hill seems more like a sleepy town

Shamokin pa was once a thriving coal town. That is why most of the homes are 100 years old. Coal industry died in late 60’s and not much other industry there for jobs. Housing is cheap so lots of unemployable folks move from new york city who are on public assistance.

What's with the random train sounds? Do you live next to the tracks? :D I hail from Beaver County, PA, and I had to laugh at the fact that two of the towns on this list are from my county (Aliquippa, Ambridge). Lucky for me, I live in one of the nicest communities in the county, a good ways away from either of these towns, that just so happen to be right across the Ohio River from one another I might add. But seriously, Most of the river-front, ex steel towns in the region are extremely depressed and could easily be on this list.
