Boy I wish I liked Vagrantsong this much. I really loved the theme, and even the mechanics, but the rulebook was brutal and even at the end of the campaign I was still needing to check for rules clarifications *constantly* with varying levels of success on actually finding an answer. I ended up just giving up three scenarios from the end.

So many great games in this segment of the list. So refreshing to see reviewers who play unreal amounts of games unashamed to put lighter games amongst their favorite games of all time, and not just try to pack in as many Suchys and Lacerdas as they can. I totally agree with Tom's thoughts about Foundations of Rome as it pertains to an overproduction game that is accessible. Normally, to get the most out of so many high quality components there is also a huge overhead of rules.

1:05:00 The thing about Catan, unlike Carcassonne, is that you sometimes go out of your way to say there are better options (and there are) because it's still so popular to the extent where it hides other games for non-gamers. For non-gamers, sometimes 'board games = Catan'. And personally, I really want non-gamers to know about the variety of games, and then, if Catan is their favorite, then hurray. But if it's hiding what board gaming variety has become for non gamers or new gamers, then you feel the itch to 'take it down'.

I know you repeatedly say you don't put legacy games into your top 100, and I certainly get that, BUT I think legacy games that are replayable afterwards could get a pass. Yes playing through the campaign is the best experience, but at least for us Clank! Legacy is a very good game even afterwards (on the standalone games after finishing alone I would give it a 8.5 or 9, but taking the great campaign experience into account I rate it a 10). We played around 10 games of it so far since finishing the campaign, even a couple of those with people who did not participate in the campaign, but they still liked it a lot :D

I'm definitely in the minority but I still like Above & Below the best out of the Red Raven 'story' games. It's got the tightest game and the story elements 'fit' better with the overarching tale of the development of a village/community. Near & Far felt too loose mechanically and almost actively discourages the story element if you're trying to win. The story being centered on your character while done to try and make the it more cohesive usually just meant it felt like the opposite. In Above & Below it's the story of a village so having disjointed vignettes makes sense but in Near & Far every time something random happens or a keyword never triggers it just felt like a poorly written videogame.

Stop it with Great Western Trail and the rondel mechanism. It is not a rondel at all. Rondels don't have beginnings nor ends, they are infinite. BGG did remove the rondel mechanism from the list of mechanisms on the GWT page. Still a pretty good game, though, rondel or not.

Wow, you folks really like a lot of games more than I do! I haven't tried most of these, but my highest ranked games here were Wingspan (32) and Orléans (35). In descending order of preference, there's also Great Western Trail (75), Viticulture Essential Edition (87), 7 Wonders (103), A Feast for Odin (121), Chronicles of Crime (132), Azul (161), Everdell (265), and Root (306). And I only have 330 games on my list!

The Wingspan expansions do not boil down to “more birds”. Oceania in particular changed the game in a profound way. Between nectar and the rebalanced boards, Oceania changed Wingspan from a egg spamming luckfest, to a luckfest with more viable paths to build your engine. Oceania is one of the best expansion ever made. It took Wingspan from a 4 to an 8.5 for me. It’s that good.

Wow! Cool to see such a vastly different opinion. I despise the Oceana expansion. There is no longer any nuance to the bird feeder. Just take nectar every single time, and timing won't matter because nectar is always available. There is no longer any reason to take engine building birds, only points. In base game the high point birds are expensive and provide little early on. With Oceana the gain food action gets plenty powerful all by itself and the high point birds typically come with strong point gaining actions as well. Nectar being a common resource means you'll never struggle to play them. Then all of that nectar you spend on each bird for some inexplicable reason gets you even more points at the end of the game. It's purely a snowball mechanic, if you spent the most nectar, odds are you are already in the lead, but just in case you weren't, the game gives the highest nectar spenders even more points. Makes the game feel like a mindless slog. Not drawing any high point birds in a round or somehow missing out on nectar until you are forced to take regular food is all it takes to lose. I would argue the game becomes almost entirely luck unless you are somehow the only player who realizes that all of the text on bird cards can be ignored because only the point value matters, with a small exception for end of round goals (occasionally). Lastly, the lay eggs action being weaker simply serves to make the high point birds even better as many of them have smaller nests. Most of the final round is spent laying eggs anyways unless you need to pass up someone's nectar amount or you have a 7+ point bird to play. But hey, to each their own. I'm glad it gave the game wings for you (pun intended), but for me it actually made me stop playing the game entirely. I need to sort the cards out and remove it from my copy because I actually really like Wingspan without it.

@@Bonzoso21 That's definitely an improvement, but I've realized that I actually just prefer the expansion to not be there at all. One house rule suggestion I've seen that actually plays pretty well is that nectar is not wild. Everything else is the same. That way spending it is more difficult making the bonus points warranted. Taking nectar can still be used for the actions themselves and birds that cost nectar feel more valuable (which is for the best because I don't recall any of them being very good). One potential issue is that birds that take any food are more desirable, but I still find this method to be the cleanest way of incorporating the expansion without ruining the game.

@@MemoryLeak1124 Reviewing the video you linked, the announcer was advocating that you add the minis to your pledge so it seems you'll be able to get the standee version by default and the version with the miniatures will be an additional pledge. So, that's a good sign. I picked up Bardsung second-hand and am rapidly realizing that I cannot afford to store dozens of unwieldly plastic miniatures in my gaming space, and also that they add very little to the experience for me. If you like games with standees there's the obvious Gloomhaven versions, there's the recently released Oathsworn, and I also recommend Machina Arcana if you can get your hands on it.

I still do not understand why "September" is such a highpoint for people. It ruined the entire Season for us. It was bad storytelling, especially in a game with very little storytelling. But even worse, it ruined October, November and December. We were so excited to finish and toss this crap back in the box. The following Seasons were major improvements.
