There's so many definitions of greatest, like technical talent (runs, range, etc.), most influential singers (inspired next generation like Elvis, or music shifts like Colbain), or other definitions. Even for technical talent you'd have to block all the opera singers(like Pavarotti) or most people wouldn't recognize most of the list, so picking a limited genre could be important.

I don't agree with their list, but I have to disagree with you. " Greatest singers " doesn't mean " Most technical singer " , if that's what it means to you then that's fine. But great vocal technique is like . . . having great quality tools to work with. It doesn't ensure you'll make a masterpiece, but it can help. I mean Whitney Houston is one of the most highly regarded singers ever and yet. . . she was outdone by lesser singers all the time. Compare her national anthem to Cher's and you can see that higher technique doesn't guarantee performance or overall skill in performing a piece.

You kind of just picked everyone with the top sales who is in every vocal simp's Top 10 pretty much, minus Etta... It always really disappoints me that we ONLY seem to think vocal technique matters when talking about " The best singers " because . . . if that's the case how come no one is putting Dimash? --- It's because people have been putting the same people at the top for a long time and putting someone young and new there is controversial despite him having OCTAVES and classical technique over everyone listed. I'd however never put him because I find his vocal choices gaudy, repulsive, not well chosen, damaging to the pieces he performs because he just wants to show off rather than perform the piece to its greatest standard. He instead looks for every chance to showcase his voice. but yeah I think there are far more interesting singers than who everyone is listing though I DO love some Aretha and Etta and M.J. and even Mariah sometimes. Like what about Donna Summer, Shirley Bassey and Kate Bush? What about Ann Wilson and Cyndi Lauper and Cher? MAHALIA JACKSON?!? I mean Cyndi has a whistle register and matches guitar riffs and has one of the best aged voices I've heard and CHER is the ONLY successful pop alto of all time and made history for having a hit in 6 decades in a row. @@ramonpadilha9987 Girly, are you dense? The title says " Top 100 Singers of All Time" , it doesn't say " Most technical " While I still don't AGREE with their choices . . . Let's not pretend the " Vocal Trinity " are the best singers. They're great but let's not pretend they're untouchable. 1. Do you think it's a coincidence that all these " Huge technical vocalists " are attractive women? No, they were SELECTED. People with larger ranges and better technique are out there and HAVE been. They're just not marketable. 2. Your measurement of what a good singer is probably limited to vocal technique and range. That stuff helps but if you don't have magic in those vocal chords you just don't have it. Luckily those women have some. 3. If all you care about is vocals then you'd be asking about singers like Dimash, but you're not despite him having better technique and a larger range? Why? Because he doesn't have that magic. 4. Let's not pretend like the Vocal Trinity hasn't been shown up by lesser singers before, ESPECIALLY Whitney.

@Blacksky59 A top singer to me is . . . Someone who understands the assignment. They understand the song and what it is. They're not turning anthems into sad ballads or every opportunity to sing into " Let me do every trick I have " A top singer has a variety of colors and textures, timbers to their voice and can weave them in a way that is interesting and not predictable. A top singer can perform live on a level that is comparable to or better than the studio version. A top singer can do more than just what they're known for and can still find ways to surprise you when you were already impressed with them as a singer.

I remember when they released this list. It was pretty much universally panned. Top music critics and fans in general at the time were like "179 experts? In what, because it's certainly not music!" (I'm paraphrasing of course but some of the placements and overall choices are....questionable at best.)

This list is controversial though 😳 Some of the singers that are in the bottom 90-100 should be higher and some should definitely be at the top of the list, maybe ON the list particularly. And the video was made way back 2019 so that says something. And Mariah Carey should REALLY be higher, because in contrary to what Joel said, she is one of the most influential, iconic female singer of all time.

Finding out this list came out in 2010 makes a lot of sense because I was like where the hell are some of the modern powerhouses like Adele, Demi Lovato, Ariana Grande, Jennifer Hudson, Cynthia Erivo, etc. If you're basing this purely on vocal talent, they deserve those spots WAY more than many of the people who were included (even if some of the listed people do have legend status).

The list is from 2010 so those people either didn't exist or were still on the climb up. and while I disagree with this list . . . I think The Rolling Stones know that vocal technique doesn't make you an amazing singer on its own. So I don't think they'd put Dimash. Yeah Dimash has amazing range, great technique . . . but he is a terrible singer. His vocal choices are gaudy and for showing off, often damaging the pieces. He typically sounds like he is doing a KZbin challenge pingponging through vocal styles . . . often entering areas of his voice that while hit perfectly don't make sense to the piece. They sound terrible beyond just " Oh he hit that, wow amazing. " but is not listenable to beyond the "Wow he sings so high " factor. Same reason they wouldn't likely put Idk . . . Kelly Clarkson. Kelly has an amazing technique and voice but for the most part sounds like elevated karaoke. It almost never sounds like it's her song or something from her.
@cringestuff2 жыл бұрын
@@iTeacupPanda oh I didn't know this was from 2010...what I just wanted to say is that they just put the most iconic/successful singers on that list and no "newer" singers who already proved themselves to be one of the best. About dimash: I get that, I don't know that much from him but what I heard was really good...maybe it's like you said I can't tell.
@iTeacupPanda2 жыл бұрын
@@cringestuff See I actually commend this list to an extent while I disagree with it because they actually DON'T just put the " most iconic / successful " they put a lot of forgotten singers who were middle of the way and got lost in the decades. Compared to other lists where they literally just put Mariah - Whitney - Celine at the top, toss in Sohyang and Dimash and the rest is an after thought. Because channels and lists CONSTANTLY do that and it's LAZY. It's just one big jack off session to the same handful of singers again and again without any thought or unique perspective. It's just the sheep following the sheep.
