Thanks for making this video! I wish I knew what industrial design was at an earlier age so I could have gone to school for it. The majority of colleges/universities in my state didn't even offer ID as a major. It's crazy how so many people don't know what it is until it's too late :(

Alex Harrison hey I know this school is outrageously expensive but if you are willing to look into it Drexel University has an amazing Product/ industrial design program... don’t let the cost scare you off like it has for many others... they usually give out generous scholarships and you can also apply for other scholarships once you are done your first year... also the school is known for co-ops so you will be able to pay off a decent portion of your college because of the work you are doing...

Hi, I really like all your hard work which you put into your videos. Do you recommend some books about creatives strategies or showing process how to create one product (I don't know fridge, whatever in that scale for personal use) from first step to last one (I mean from industrial design point of view)? Just to get the "minset". Maybe this is idea for a new episode or have you made sth similar already? :) Thanks in advance.

@JimmyHuynhdesign
@JimmyHuynhdesign 7 жыл бұрын
One thing I can say about going to Northern CA schools is that there are some pretty booming industries out there. Ones such as tech products, shoe design, and many others. If you're interested in getting into one of those industries, SFSU or SJSU might be a better fit. Yeah man, it really is difficult to find work produced from the schools. Main reason why I like to post student projects. Good luck with your decision Jon!

May I add, UNAM, Mexico City Mexico according to the Ranking QS world university 2019 is in the top two best colleges in all Ibero-America (That is Latin America and Spain). UNAM does accept foreign students. The tuition for one semester is $0.25 Mexican pesos, paid on campus if you pay through the bank its $100 Mexican pesos because obviously, banks don't accept 0.25 payments xd. Those 0.25 equal 0,01 USD

What are the most affordable ONLINE industrial design schools? I spent a couple hours researching all 11 and almost none of them have design related online programs. I'll continue my own research. Just thought others might be interested in the answer as well. #3 CSU:LB and #10 NCSU have degrees in Instructional/Learning Design. (NCSU is Master's only) #10 NCSU also offers a Doctorate in Design. I've been eye-balling Academy of Art's (San Francisco) online ID program, but I don't think it's worth the $29k per year.

Hi! I love your videos! I'm a ID freshman at the University of Houston. I was just wondering how intense your program was especially the first couple years. Here they are brutal lol. Freshman year is meant to be an intense weed-out class here. Probably pulled 2 all nighters a week consistently for studio this first semester. A lot of people dropped. Are most ID programs that intense at first?

May I ask how the ID program is in Houston? Is it ID in general or is it more focused towards Product Design? I'm planning to transfer there next year.
@annaleisegray8246
@annaleisegray8246 8 жыл бұрын
TitanSubZero15 I would say it's more ID in general, but of course ID is essentially product design. To give you an idea of the assignments for the first semester, our fourth years designed a watercraft (kayak) for people with physical disabilities, our third years had to design dorm furniture, and our second years were given an open assignment to create a product that solved a problem. First semester of first year actually shares Studio with Architecture majors, and after your first semester (if you pass) you can decide if you want to do ID or Architecture. One thing that's different about our ID program is that it's a BS not a BFA. Also they have a strong focus on model making :) in general it's a really nice program. You get your own studio desk, and lockers, and there are actually showers on the top floor of the building. A downside is that the cost of materials for this program is very high. Last semester I spent $700 on supplies alone, and this semester I've already spent $400... also you don't get any sleep ever
@TitanSubZero15

Annaleise Gray Thank you very much for the response. I come from a Transportation Design (Detroit) background but due to finances decided to stay in-state and continue to finish my Architecture associates. Since Houston is the only school that offers ID I was curious about the specifics of the program. Those overnights can get crazy. :)

Good to know! I've been looking into the ID program at UH so this helps alot. May I ask did you transfer into the program? I'm just curious as to how that works out.
@TitanSubZero15
@TitanSubZero15 8 жыл бұрын
I applied as a transfer before I went to Detroit. I got into UH but not into the ID program :'( I'll apply again once I get my associates. You apply as a transfer, send all the documents listed on their site, pay the application fee ($50) and that's it. For any majors within the Gerald Hines College of Architecture and Design, you do need to also send a portfolio showing your art work. I sent a mix of Industrial Design, Architecture and Fine Arts pieces.

Jimmy thank you so much for uploading this video. I randomly came across your KZbin channel while researching more about Industrial Design and it has been a tremendous help. I have a BS in Mech. Eng. and am trying to go back to school for another degree. Because of your video I am very much interested in attending CSLB. Quick question, the cost of your attendance is that towards a BS? Also, I was reading the college website, it sounds like you need to take certain courses (portfolio submission) before you are officially in the industrial design major. Does that mean you are declared another generic art design major first then admitted to BS of ID? thanks in advance! SBM

SamBamMang hey man, kind of an off topic question, but I'm interested in going to school either for Mechanical Engineering or Industrial Design. Wondering what your thoughts were on these two disciplines?
@sammyn.3D
@sammyn.3D 8 жыл бұрын
Aaron D hey Aaron, mechanical engineering is a very broad degree that can take you into many different fields. The degree focuses on the fundamentals and foundation of making the products or systems work which is backed up heavily by math and stress analysis. whereas the industrial designer is aware of those processes and manufacturing techniques to help dictate their finish or practical design towards the end of their design process. Hopefully real industrial designers can clarify my statement but that's my general understanding.
@AcrossDaGalaxy
@AcrossDaGalaxy 8 жыл бұрын
From my own research, it seems that Mech Eng is more on the technical side of things, whereas ID is more conceptual and even dabbles a little on sales and marketing. I think your answer reinforces what I've found out about these two industries. Thank you for your reply!
