How do you think the industrial design field will change when we as a society finally realize that the world can’t contain all of our designing and redesigning of plastic crap, tech devices and cars? I’m an industrial designer so this is an honest question. I think the world needs industrial designers who can be a part of designing a more sustainable way of life.

Industrial designers are at the core of this topic. The answer is circularity. Designers can be consultants to companies in a strategic field to change towards a more sustainable product Ecosystem. I know some agencies in Europe and USA which already shifted towards this business model in the last two years. Products will just be layouted and structured differently towards a circular economy.

I'm trying the entry test for Milano Politecnico design school, which is World's top 5 in ranking for design, just next to MIT. The problem is I'm already 34 years old, I have an art background and I can draw tho. Hopefully it's not too late for this career path.

MIT and milano politechnics aren't really about design, it's ingeniering... the best design schools aren't really ranked.. you have the aalto university in finland, the royal college of art, the st martins school, the ecal and others... the only big art school existing similar to milano politechnic is the aalto university, other have only a few places for the best artitst

Stuff always will be needed to be designed. I don't think/hope we will all move to the metaverse. Not sure who will design all the stuff. Maybe just some marketing guys with the help of ai apps? Not good stuff but good enough (at least to their eyes). Or just some product managers.. for sure things should become better and most of all more sustainable, but this may not necessarily happen, as the market rules by other parameters. People lust for shiny nice stuff. Apple producs etc., huge and expensive cars.. lots of people (and companies) don't care about sustainability. So this may sound a bit pessimistic.. Usually I'm optimistic that things will get better, but I'm not that sure anymore.. maybe we are heading to some kind of singularity. Industrial Design is becoming a commodity, like so many things. Lots of stuff is getting automated, generative.. some sliders in some apps can do so much nowadays.. even non-experts can create, 3D print or even produce stuff. Good taste and aesthetic sensebility often become secondary.. so what will be the consequences? I have more questions than answers ..

Hey Jimmy, nice video. What your take (pros and cons) on industrial design courses offered online through independent people/indie groups? I ask since I have no money to attend an art school or university and those online options seems in my price range. Only downside I see is not having equipment available and buying your own gear. But overall, it seems a good deal.
@JimmyHuynhdesign

Zap, how old are you? have you considered financial aid or student loans? Your problem is not to figure out if these online schools are good, your problem is figuring out how to afford a quality university.

I started 2,5 years ago working 4/5 and going to school 2 days a week. Considering I could skip some stuff cause of my previous experiences I only have one such year to go and my last year I am going to go fulltime student to finish asap. That year I will fill in being unemployed and where I live you get a small amount of money for it cause I'm studying for a job that is under represented. I might also add a student loan to that to have a comfortable time doing so.

Sorry to say, but your thoughts are just scratching the surface. You are not talking about any kind of changes which are already happening at the moment in the business. Of course you’re right that there will always be designers who have to design well working nice looking products but there is much more coming and happening right now. In the future we will have much more regulations in terms of circularity and sustainability. Designers are the perfect consultants for companies in this term. Many international agencies already shifted from pure industrial design towards circularity consultancies. I don’t want to go more into detail here but I think this was not very informative. Cheers

AI will definitely dilute the value of designers as companies realize they can save money by shrinking their design staff and substitute it with more AI. AI will also lower the hurdle to becoming a designer. Can’t draw, no problem, AI can do that! So all of a sudden the industrial designer market is flooded with designers, and employers will not be willing to pay as much for a designer. It’s kind of a bleak outlook in my opinion.

Its Biodesign and Ecodesign. I think this high end design for Cars should be stopped and Metaverse is completely a bad development 😅. Maybe with real ecological materials, but i dont see this. We see already that cars are made for the top 10% of people (in few years only for 1%) and its also my opinion, as a Product Designer, the ethical and morality as a Designer is more important than ever before. So climatechange is a Designers question, we have to improve our humancentered work. Transition Design is also a big thing, pls notice that, that we have the possibility to reach companies and clients. I hope the Design will change itself from focusing Products for high end and 1% of wealthy people to a ecological and social centered Design. Greets from Germany

I have noticed a trend in both industrial design and media content where poor quality is less important than profitability. Netflix business model is poor content is ok as long as enough people stream it. I have seen the same thing with tools for the construction industry. Many products appear to missing a design step. It seems as if the designers were sent home on the final day and an accountant and a manager did cost reduction to hit a cost target and consequently sabotaged a good design. I've seen a similar thing with Italian products (coffee grinders and large concert lights) that look finished on the outside but inside they are more like a working prototype held together by cable ties. I'd love to hear from a real industrial designer - is your work being sabotaged?
