Almost every railfan has a favorite steam excursion locomotive, but sadly, not all of them are operational today. Some were retired for various reasons or - in the worst case - outright scrapped.
Thankfully, some engines won't be down for long and are expected to return to service in the near future. Find out which ones are cold and which ones have a chance of rebirth in my personal list of the Top 11 Retired Steam Excursion Stars!

yes especialy around north indiana, you could see the old roundhouse and coal tower in garrett that was used only 10 years, and in fort wayne you could go to pique yard and see the most ledgendary of the Pensy locos, like q1 q2 s1 s2 the t1's and so on as fort wayne was on the crestline to chicago division where the engines were based, and the huge errecting shop that made at the turn of the century Fort Wayne the Altoona of the West of the prr, and see 765 running in revenue freight and the one they wanted 767 that was the first to ceremonialy cross the elevation at downtown, though 765 already ran a freight train across it before making it the actual first I want to see first hand what the inside of the roundhouse looked like I would really like that but it was torn down in 1968

The 819 was saved by the legend of a man named Joseph Darrel Cason. If you have followed any steam locomotive restoration in the past decade on Facebook, you know his name. Shout out to him and thanks for this series of videos. (Nashville Steam Preservation Society member and volunteer NC&StL 576.)

A little correction on the video. Louis W. Menk did have interest in running steam, however the CB&Q was struggling financially and the Board of Directors agreed that they needed to end the program. Menk looked for buyers for the two locomotives, originally the 5632 was going to Kansas, but Richard Jensen offerd to keep the engine running. Thus, that sealed the fate of the engine.

@TrainGuru

I have looked at his records, I think a horrible owner is a bit strong. Granted, he did not take care of his engines, but his heart was in the right place. He had all the right reasons to buy the engines, but he just didn't know what to do with them after he had some financial difficulties. In addition, Fred Kepner was much, much worse as an owner. In McCloud, California, he sued the McCloud River Railroad following the filming of Stand By Me on the railroad. In a hasty settlement, he acquired ownership of McCloud 25 and for 15 years, the railroad had no steam excursions until the McCloud Railway purchased the engine from Kepner. I’d say that is worse than Jensen, he at least cared and ran his locomotives.

It horrifies me that two steam engines that managed to escape the scrapper's cutting torch still ended up being cut up. However, I am happy to hear that 4070 and 819 will be returning in the future. I've heard of those engines, and I would love to see them in action and hear their beautiful whistles. Can't wait for Part 2.

To me Grand Trunk Western #5629 and CB&Q #5632 Are related for 2 reasons. First of all both engines ended up being scrapped; But more interestingly, One of each of their surviving sister engines share their road numbers. One of GTW #5629's sisters is numbered 5632, and one of CB&Q #5632's sisters is ironically numbered #5629. Coincidence or not, I think that's really neat. :)

While Metra was the cause for the scrapping of the 5629. People seem to forget it wasn't the railroad itself, but the (at the time) higher ups and management who demanded the engine to be scrapped. In 2016 and 2017 current Metra management sponsored excursions with Nickel Plate Road #765 to run The Varsity to Janesville, WI, and The Joliet Rocket from Joliet to Chicago, IL. Soo Line 2-8-2 #1003 was also permitted to run via Metra to attend a charity event for Shriners Childrens Hospital in August of 2017. Since then, Metra has been generous to the railfan and preservation community. There's no need to to hate a railroad's existence, but definitely in the very least rational to question the people of Metra's decisions in 1987. Either way, the damage has been done, and it seems these current steam excursions is in a way, the long awaited apology.

The 819 is reportedly undergoing a very slow restoration to operational conditions. I don’t volunteer for the Cotton Belt Historical Society, so I can’t confirm if this is actually true, though with its home base (which also happens to be the shops it was built in) being less than an hour from my location, I wouldn’t be surprised if it was being restored at least cosmetically.

Steam locomotives are a unique breed of machinery, If the human soul exist, and i believe it does , then the hard work, dedication, and love for the machine itself from the craftsman and engineers surely have been absorbed by the loco themselves, each engine has a personality all unto itself, it has good days and bad days but treat her well and she will do you proud ,🙏🏻🚂

Priorities change in regards to the host railroads and sometimes, engines are retired from excursion service because the groups that ran them had no other choice. The world of mainline steam excursions is like a pendulum - it swings back and forth, changing with management, policies and other circumstances.

Between Metra and the Federal District Court for Eastern District of Illinois, the IRM was even denied permission to move it in large sections. It had to be demolished under technicalities of, I believe, was the ADA Act, a Federal law regarding titles, ownership, and transferring requirements. My friend did the demo job on it, and he remembered a lot of the facts on why it went this way. I talked to a couple of guys from IRM years ago who also gave me some facts.

We in Queensland (AUS) have two examples of once preserved engines meeting the cutter’s torch. Former rail tour engine Beyer-Garrett No. 1096 was scrapped in 1973 after suffering a hot axle box, and Pacific No. 843 met the same fate in 1975.

Here's the actual case between 5629 and 5632: In the case of 5629, it was actually Jensen to blame, and as you said, some groups (particularly) the IRM, offered to purchase the locomotive for $15,000 from Jensen, THEY made the offer TO him. And he said NO. Metra did the same, but as the locomotive was Jensens, Metra wasn't allowed to claim ownership of Jensens property, and finally the court ordered them to scrap it. As for 5632, apparently it and CB&Q 4963 were involved in an illegal sale from C&WI, and 5632 was scrapped (again, illegally) and Jensen was absolutely pissed off and sued both the scrap company and C&WI for it

One of my best friends (who died in July this year) and sometime business partner was the man whose crew cut up 5629 at Metra in about '88. It is a difficult story to get exactly right, but it was in part to Jensen's seeming senile decisions at the end, the entry of a Federal Court into the picture to sort out regulations under the ADA Act (Automotive Dismantling Act) which is what prevented this from being sold even in large individual pieces to the IRM, and just good old pissin'-match politics at different levels. It was not legal to sell this untitled unit as a vehicle. The Federal Court ordered the complete demolition of the loco. The Erman-Howell Division of Luria Steel got the contract to wreck it, and my friend drew the ticket to perform the task under a sub-contract. I have a one-of-a-kind oil painting about 3 feet long done by Chicago artist Josef Metz of the scene as it looked at 5:30, done in a stylized manner with other locomotives and Mexican burners to make it resemble a locomotive scrapyard in the '50s!

+Christopher Kovacs Well, thank YOU! Loved this video! I may have supplied some facts, but actually I probably know very little in actuality! I never actually never went and actually saw the job as it was going on. Rob Sinise was the guy with the sub-contract, and Earl Mosby was the crew leader. Rob loaded out the scrap from it with a large Barco loader. The agent for the Erman Division was guy named McMahon and Rob claimed he came right to the job and got the bell! I just remember it was a terrible mess! Protesters came from far and wide and had to be barred from the yard. IRM wanted to haul it out in like 4 large pieces, but the Court actually could not allow it under that ADA Act! Metra could not hand title to it as a vehicle. Jensen was in terrible health also, and his decisions were bad in general. He really got mis-treated in this and other dealings with the railroads. There was a locomotive stored at the Erman-Howell facility on 87th in Chicago that may have been the Q 5632. There was another turn-of-the-century 4-4-0 (as I remember) that was virtual rolling boiler with the cab sitting on the tender sitting on a flatcar in grey primer at Metron Steel on the East Side that was eventually moved to 107th east of Vincennes ages ago, that might have been Jensen's also. A passenger heavy-weight was there too!

About that 5629 one, you left out some other parts. For one,Jensen removed critical components off of the 5629 and sold them to railfans, also a court ruled that if 5629 wasn't moved off, then it was to be destroyed (scrapped). Also the groups like the IRM actually made offers to buy the 5629, and even Metra themselves made an offer to buy the 5629 to give to a museum, but the court said that they couldn't legally obtain ownership of Jensen's property. Eventually the court ordered the 5629 to be scrapped and well, the rest is history.

It always makes me so sad to see a steam locomotive get scrapped, or just left somewhere to rust. If I could, I'd buy every single one of them and move them to a new railway... a safe place, where they will run excursions without ever being scrapped. I'd call it "Steam Haven Railway"

Eli, I'm sorry to say, but you are no psychic. The only time #819 will ever return to service is when the necessary funding is allocated and the work is done to return it to service. All of those factors are dependent on how many people want to donate to the project, how much fundraising the group does and a whole bunch of other variables.

What music did you use during talking about 5629 and where can I find the version of the music that you used? Also, CURSE METRA FOR SCRAPPING 5629! I not even a fan of Metra.
