Greetings, Your Top 10 video was viewed and your channel Subscribed. High quality production and narrative. Thank you. I'm a senior citizen, and cover band lead guitarist: Library of about 60 songs, Southern Rock, Electric-Country, and a few GNR. I use Johnson Millenium JM250/Peavey 4X12, horn cab at shows, and store a Johnson Millenium JM150 in my home studio. Both rigs have a Johnson J12 Controller. I need a wide variation of tone and effects to cover the different songs and something easy to use, rugged-built like a tank. I transitioned from Fender TwinReverb (Silver Face is better for my work) with pedal board to the Johnson's a long time ago. With Johnson Millenium and custom patches, I get ease of use; Guitar cable straight into amp, and can quickly switch effects. The other lead player in my band uses a Peavey MaceVt and dual Johnson Millenium 4X12 cabs. Can you do a video report on Top Amps for Cover Bands? My gear dates from the late 1980's and is no longer repairable. Going back to a Tube Amp with pedal board(Morely Optical Volume is my recommendation for tube amps) would be all that I could do. There are so many awful solid state amps blurring choices. Lastly. Is a Fender Dual Showman with Pedal Board: Tube Screamer, Boss CS3, and Morley volume/wah a versatile, loud, rugged, reliable option?

Soldano is like a holy grail brand for me but my favorite is the Hot Rod that Warren Haynes plays. Back in the summer it came out that Mike Soldano had actually designed an amp for Stevie that he never got to actually play but it would have been cool to see what he could have done with a Soldano also. That's a wide variety of sounds when you think George Lynch, Warren DeMartini, Warren Haynes, and EVH all played Soldano's. Have you ever seen that Wampler SLOstortion pedal? It's based on this amp because it's Brian Wampler's favorite amp.

In over 50+ years of playing, I've played through and/or owned more than a few amps. I have to say, my all time favorite was a 1963 Sears and,Roebuck's Silvertone Twin Twelve (1484)that I bought, used, for $50 in 1969. Added to that was an original Dallas-Arbiter Fuzz Face and a Gibson SG. Served me well through the 80's. Wish I never sold it!
@charlesbolton84715 жыл бұрын
James Gross Those amps are really cool. I have one that I bought a couple of years ago. I’m not sure what year mine is but they were only made from 1963-1967, and brand new they were about $165 compared to $400 for similar Fender. I paid quite a bit more for mine and I have never seen another one in person in as good a condition as the one I bought. Ironically, about a month after I bought mine a guy had one for sale on Reverb.com that was still in it’s original cardboard shipping box. It was practically brand new, and he sold it for less than I paid for mine.

@robertwillett41222 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I hear ya Mr. Gross, Good Sir. I've been playing and chasing that magic tone for little over 40 years. I had some great and expensive gear, just to trade it in on something I shouldn't have. I've played just about everything. I wish that I could get some of it back. But, I'm not in band anymore. I play for the enjoyment and it's something that you can really be proud of. Look man, learning guitar was like impossible, but I just wouldn't quit. Now I can play most anything. Except I don't shred. I can play fast belive me, but I'm the type that likes well placed notes and harmony. Now I'm old in my late 50s and live in a condo, hence nothing loud. I really like the rig I have now. It's a PRSse custom. 300 bucks at a pawn shop, and it didn't have a scratch on it, so I bought it and fell in love . The neck fits me perfectly. So I matched it up with a DLS1 watt tube Marshall head with a 1×12 Egnator cab, and ofcourse a vox wha. The search is over and it does, to me sound excellent. Luckily I saved some penny's, have everything payed off. Pretty much retired. Now I play every single day and it amazes me that after all these years of learning and playing, I still can't wait to play. People that know there way around the old fret board should be proud of themselves. Have a great day, stay safe and jam on brother.

I purchased the Wangs #2204 and that’s after I had sold all my “tube” amps and had switched to Fractal FXIII, AX8, and Line 6 Helix, but playing the #2204 at a jam nite once, I was hooked and placed an order the very next day! It weighs 10 tons, and has a thoroughly impractical top handle, but I love my Marshall JCM 800 Model 4212 50W Super Lead combo. The day I bought it in 1983, I was super-fit, and confident I could lug it to the car park in the centre of town. Pretty soon, I took it back to the shop and said I'd bring my car to pick it up. At that point, I said nobody was going to steal it. However, on one occasion, some nameless bastard did steal it from the back seat of my car when I lazily locked it in the car overnight after a gig... and they left it by the hedge outside my house, undamaged. Two years ago, after decades of uncomplaining operatic metal, Marsha was looking a tad dowdy and down on her luck. Torn speaker fret, torn, cigarette burnt Tolex that was sticky with old booze (mostly JD and Fullers ESB beer), busted knobs, rusty screws, crappy plastics and so on. She did need another retube anyway, so I took her to Marshall's Bletchley HQ, which is only about 15 miles away from my house, and paid for a full birthday, which was far from cheap, but nowhere near what I had feared. What I liked was that the guys at Marshall seemed more interested in keeping more old street warriors rocking than trying to sell you a new amp. They actually did more than I asked, but didn't charge me for it because it wasn't on their original quote. There are still old battle scars on the front panel, but otherwise, she looks absolutely cherry. I invested in a soft case to keep Marsha looking good, and now I keep my gig drinks on a dual Laney wedge monitor hard case, not on Marsha.

Hmm… fair enough. I wouldn’t have the exact same choices, but I see why you picked them. I would only have couple change from your list.. like you mentioned, maybe the VH4 instead of Herbert, or maybe even more courageous and go for the new VHX that can have both Herbert and VH4 circuits and more. Also, I would include a Mesa Boogie. I like the Mark V, but if we really need to pick a legendary, I think it would be the Mark IIC+. And maybe, just for the “Legendary status”, I would throw the whole Dumble ODS… even if there was multiple versions of that amp. But it was replicated by many builder and it’s been used by a lot of guitarists. To include my choices instead of yours, I would probably removed the Fender Sonic because it’s a great amp, sure, but it’s not Legendary… IMHO. And I’m not sure about the Orange choice… but again, I’m not super familiar to how popular they were (contrary to Fender Bassman, Vox AC30, Plexi and other SLO, Mesa Dual Rec, etc…). So I didn’t count and it might be a Top 13 or even Top 14, but hey, you got the point ;)

Good list but as others have pointed out, you forgot Hiwatt - great amps for that crisp Marshall like tone but a hair cleaner. Also, you should do a vid on clones. With the prices upwards of $4 to $5K for late 1960's to mid 1970's Marshalls, Fenders, Vox etc., well built clones are great because for half the price you can get pretty close to the original in tone and you can add an effects loop into them - something that should never be done to a vintage amp.

I'd definitely have the dual rectifier before the Mark series messa amps. It truly was the amp of a generation is why. It's become VERY iconic because of all those drop tuned bands in the late 90' and 2000's. Another amp I'd put on here that will raise some eyebrows is the Boss Katana. When this video was made, it had no business on this list, but over the last 5 years, it's become the highest selling guitar amp of all time. It's also the first digital amp to gain true mainstream success with professional musicians. Rock stars weren't using amps like the early Line 6 stuff, the Johnson Millennium, or fender cyber twin. The Katana is being played by not just the professional cover band guys, but also professional session musicians and efects heavy mainstream touring bands.
@RobertWJackson7 ай бұрын
The Katana is not the highest-selling guitar amp of all time. That award still belongs to the Fender Deluxe Reverb, and it’s not giving up that title anytime soon. The Katana IS, however, now the best-selling affordable solid-state modeling amp series on the market today. Boss took that title from the Line 6 Spiders that had held it for YEARS.

Great information as always, I like the Roland jazz 120H its the rare head , I'm looking for one to own (anybody) , back in the 80s my friend had one and I really loved it !!!!!!! Robert any thoughts on it Sir???
@RobertWJackson2 жыл бұрын
My understanding is that they’ve never produced the head version as a production model. They’ve all been custom builds for top-tier artists. Both James and Kirk in Metallica each have one. Honestly, those are the only ones I’ve seen. Maybe they’ll come off one of them for you ? 🤷🏻♂️

Good job Robert, the JMP / Super Lead, Super Bass, designation started in mid 1967 and ran until 1981, when the "800" series came into play, so most Super Leads are JMP's. Mid 1977 thru 1981 "JMP" 2204 and 2203 models are exactly the same electronically as the JCM 800 run, these earlier models sound great just like 800's do.

@@RobertWJackson Mine would be a hacked up example, although the first choice of all guitar players without exception at community gigs or charitable events, music festivals. Is it true that Lee Jackson modified Eddy Van Halen's first Marshalls?? I was told upon buying this amp in OKC this story. He had two Marshall stacks for sale my choice $1,000 per. The JCM800 was mint unmodified condition. The 78 JMP100 had one speaker replaced, rest are original greenbacks I believe and I think the cabinets are sequential#. still has a small hole in one speaker, missing corners, torn cloth on cabinets, even some missing knobs and has an extra knob up front I believe for the supposed Lee Jackson Mod. No paperwork and just not sure of validity. I purchased in 1993ish. I'm wondering would it be worth sending the head back to Marshall to be restored? Make no doubt about it, there's a reason everyone, all the old school players want to use it at community gigs.
@RobertWJackson2 жыл бұрын
No, I don’t believe Eddie Van Halen and Lee Jackson ever crossed paths, at least not back in Eddie’s Marshall days. It’s widely known that Jose Arredondo (the Jose mod is named after him), Kevin Brown (the man who “the Brown sound” is named after), and later Mike Soldano all modded Eddie’s Marshall heads. Even if Lee Jackson DID mod the head that you have, I wouldn’t trust that validity of that without any paperwork. As for putting it back to stock, I’m all in favor of that, but if you like the way it sounds now, leave it the way it is.
@johnmarshall39032 жыл бұрын
@@johnathanhurd3561 Lee usually signed and dated inside the chassis with a sharpie and glued his business card inside the head box on his modified Marshall amps. Mike Soldano and Jose's work on Eddie's amps were more maintenance than mods.

Looks like the jC 120 is basically a Jazz amp I wonder if it could be used for Metal too. I pretty sure I played through one before at Guitar Center and I liked the metal sound I got out of it a lot

That wasn’t a JC-120 if you got a metal tone out of it. But metal players do use them as pedal platforms all the time because they’re EXCELLENT for that.

I have had the same amp (4212 50W JCM800) from new, long before you were born. I used to use the 3/4 stack as well, and I love it. Someone did once lend me a 2205 (50W split channel) head. Apart from being able to get more volume with 2 x 2x12 cabs, I can't really hear the difference. If that's your amp, hang on to it. It's a good 'un, if you're into rock.

I understand the sentimental value of the Marshall dominating the 80’s but honestly, the Diezel Herbert is on another level. Even the clean sound is spectacular. I have to laugh ..americans think the Beatles invented the ac30..hank Marvin played a big part of the voicing of what became the ac30..it was he who made the ac30 famous first..thats why everybody wanted one including the Beatles.. yet the shadows seem to be wiped from history for the part they played in the creation of the ac30..

Hank Marvin was the lead guitarist with the Shadows who influenced thousands of young British guitarists including Clapton and Harrison, in the early sixties. He is still playing as brilliantly as ever. I realise Americans can be insular and unaware of anything outside their own shores, but anyone with an appreciation of great guitar playing, whatever their nationality would have heard of Hank.

I know the guy that owns it now, and it was absolutely modified. LOL My friend who now owns it has gone through every wire and every solder joint in the thing as he is was wanting to see what all had been done to it because he is using it for inspiration for one of his amp company’s upcoming releases. I don’t want to say who because I don’t know what surprises that individual has and I don’t want to let the cat out of the bag with what I do know. That being said, Eddie owned WAY more than one of them, so chances are we’re both right. LOL
