The "double fake" you identified is what many people call setting/loading the ball. Its a muscle memory action that helps the bowler to get comfortable and in the right position to deliver the ball. A lot of bowling is a routine, one step out and the result is wildly different to what is desired. Its why you see bowlers counting exact steps back to the start of their run.

A big difference between bowling and pitching is that a bowler must has a straight arm when bowling, a bent elbow is called “chucking” and is an illegal bowling technique. See the Muttiah Muralitharan debacle as a prime example. Essentially, because the bowlers can’t use their elbows the whip the ball like a pitcher can, they need the run up to get the speed. Imagine if they could also add that to their action!

Just a quick terminology tip: Using 'bowls' to describe each individual 'bowl' isn't technically incorrect, but most cricket fans will use the terms 'ball'/'balls' or 'delivery'/'deliveries'. e.g. "Wow, that was a fantastic delivery!", or "What a ball!", also "There are four balls remaining in the over", etc. Variations of 'bowls' are used mostly as a verb, and rarely as a noun in cricket terminology. "Mitch bowls faster than Pat", "He bowled an amazing spell before lunch", "I'm going to practice bowling down at the local nets", etc. Hope this helps. Keep up the great reactions. Love to see more cricket 😁

Some of these weren’t swing bowling wickets, they were what we call cutters. Swing bowling moves in the air cutters move off the wicket, they are basically fast spin bowling. In essence one moves from air pressure reacting to the shine on the ball the other is the ball moving off the pitch because of the spin put on it by the bowler. A swing bowler needs to have the seam of the ball pointing towards the stumps and not wobbling for it to move towards the batsman and pointing away to move away from the batsman. Any wobble in the seam of the ball and it won’t move. Also they shine one side of the ball with sweat so the air pressure will move it easier, think of a spit ball or the pitcher putting illegal crap on the baseball to make it move. I hope this helps, any questions just ask as I know a lot about AFL and cricket having played both at a high level.

With the last two the swing was aided by deviation off the upright seam (see other note below on how the bowlers hold and deleiver the ball) if the ball lands on the seam which sits up as you can tell with the ball you have it can change direction simply because of that. I'd say #11 was all seam really, didn't seem to swing in the air much.

The movement you see in the air is ' conventional swing' from the shiny side of the ball (polished by the fielders) being faster thought the air than the roughed-up (unpolished) side. The seam acts as a rudder. The spin is backspin from the release, this helps the seam grip the surface on impact. The movement you see from the impact with the surface is called 'seam movement' from the seam biting and gripping the surface. The more live grass or dampness in the surface the more it will let the ball grip and move. If the surface is very hard and dry the ball can get roughed up enough to create reverse swing where the ball swings towards the heavier shinny side and away from the lighter rough side but this takes about 50 overs or more to happen. If the surface is dry and dusty the slower 'spin' bowlers can get movement off the surface via spin. If they get lots of revs on the ball they also drift the ball in the air like a baseball pitcher because the ball drifts in the opposite direction to the spin and will dip with any over spin.

The difference in speed between bowling and pitching is due to the fact a pitchers centre of mass is behind the ball, generating more force and momentum. A bowler releases the ball above his head, far from centre of mass, hence the run up to add force and momentum.

The swing on the ball is enabled by polishing one side of the ball and leaving the other side rough. The air flow over ball therefore travels more quickly over the smooth side and slower over the rough side. That causes the ball to move in air. If you want to see top pace swing bowling search out Waqar Younid and Wasim Akram. Both brilliant swing and pace bowlers now retired.

The major difference between pitching and bowling is arm position. Think of it like an archer (pitching) versus a slinger (bowling). The archer is able to get a higher speed with far less effort due to the action involved, whereas the slinger must work harder to achieve the same speeds. So the fact that bowlers bowl over 95 mph is pretty insane. Then factor in that the batsman is not seeing the ball coming straight at them and has to contend with the ball deviating off the pitch or bouncing up at them sharply, and you can see where bowling has its benefits even at a slower speed. I've played both baseball and cricket, and I would 100% prefer to face a pitcher vs a bowler at the same speed.

The 'swing' is also generated through the air due to the particular polishing of the ball by the bowlers. They only polish one side and the other stays 'roughed up', so the air doesn't move as smoothly across the ball. Check out the Aussie legends Dennis Lillee, Jeff Thomson, and Glenn McGrath. Also, check out some of the aggressive moments in cricket. For a 'non contact' sport, it's had its moments lol

Generally, it's reckoned that the run up generates up to 10% of the ball speed. (It will vary from bowler to bowler). The run up is mainly to set the bowler's rythme and position for when they release the ball. Also 'throwing' a ball is illegal, so they can't wind up and deliver a ball like a baseball pitcher. It's all about the bio-mechanics. :-)

Run up is very important for a bowler to generate the required momentum and long run up does not mean more speed bcz there are bowlers who can bowl around 150 kmph with not so long run up. If a fast bowler have a good run up than it also help him to stay away from various injuries while generating pace through shoulder movement, back and their leg and ankle.

Swing bowlers will not bowl as fast as Fast Bowlers because the ball needs time in the air to swing to the left or right to deceive the batsmen. Swing bowlers generally bowl in the 80s mph whereas Fast bowlers will bowl in the 90s mph and are trying to deceive the batsman through sheer pace

Some bowlers are around 100mph but they’d probably be faster if they were allowed to throw it. The rule says you need a straight arm so without the run up they’d be very slow. You mention Shane Warne, he was a spin bowler and used the grip of the seam (you call laces) to flick off the ground and change direction. Guys like him bowl slower but with heaps more rotations on the ball. These swing bowlers use the seam more as a keel and keep 1 side of the ball really shiny and let the other half get rough and scuffed. They’re keeping the seam close to vertical so the air rushing past in flight is what changes the balls direction. Speed isn’t necessarily the objective but guys who can bowl 95-100 and swing it are awesome.

Cool to see you enjoying cricket mate..The swing bowling can be an effect of polishing just one side of the ball which allows the other side to be roughed up from the bat and the cricket pitch..this causes the ball to swing even more through the air..it can also have an effect called reverse swing on the ball..and all comes down to how the bowler holds and releases the ball, he may choose to hold the ball with the polished side in or out to swing the ball away as well as in to the batsman..hope that isn't to confusing for you but you seem to have a good grasp of the game. These days a fast bowler can deliver the ball at about 100 MPH as fitness and training is far more relevant in the game..you should also do that catches video some amazing catches to view and also do more on spin bowling it is an art in itself being slower and with so much emphasis on the action of the ball when delivered... Keep Safe Keep Strong and greetings from Australia

Bowlers can bowl 100mph but they choose to bowl slow at times to decieve a batsman, and you have to remember you can't compare it to baseball pitching, in cricket you rotate your full arm which is much more hard on your body as opposed to just chucking it like a pitcher
@aac74
@aac74 3 жыл бұрын
The bowling run-up is not about speed it is about rhythm, momentum and balance so when you plant your foot at the crease you can convert the maximum amount of energy from the body to the ball via pivoting the torse. Just like a javelin thrower. Except the javelin thrower is looking for maximum range while the bowler is trying to push the ball into the surface. Bowling is different from pitching. With a straight arm, you need forward momentum to balance the body, otherwise, you are just falling over when you deliver the ball at speed into the surface.

One thing you may not be aware of in Cricket is that the bowlers have to use the same ball for the entire innings in White Ball Cricket and for 80x6 ball overs in red ball Cricket. To get the best performance out of the ball they will shine one side of the ball only and leave the other side side to get as rough as possible, legally they can only use Sweat and Saliva* to shine the ball and can not rough up the other side at all. There is a very long history of players getting caught illegally effecting the ball and that will normally result in 1-2 match bans or 12 month bans if your Australian. Unlike American sports when the ball goes into the crowd it has to be returned. *This rule is currently suspended due to COVID-19 and at present if anyone but a player or Umpire touches the match ball then it has to be sanitized.

Ok the speed of the ball by comparison to a baseball pitch is due to the fact that the baseball pitch is taken straight on, with no bounce, because cricketers bowl into the pitch the angle itself shows the speed to be lower however if you look at the time taken for the ball to be delivered and reach the batter the speeds are comparable. Remember from the point the bowler bowls from and where the batter stands is pretty much the same distance as home plate to the mound.

The rule that a bowler must not BEND the arm and keep it straight slows the speed down but bowlers easily throw upto 80 85 mph. But the slower bowlers often get more swing. It all depends on what a bowler wants to do.

In cricket unless a bowler moves the ball either in the air or of the wicket, he won't cause any trouble to the batsman. That's why speed isn't everything in cricket but swing is. The faster the ball the easier it is to get boundaries, all a batsman has to do is time and place it in the gap. Also, bowlers who bowls well over 155kmp will have very short, injury prone career because of the stress of all that "run up momentum" does to their body.

The running question.. you don’t throw like you do it in base ball.. when a bowler extends or straightens the elbow more than 15 degrees while releasing the ball it’s an illegal action. we can’t bend the arm, or extend the elbow. If you do that, it’s gonna be called a throw/chucking and people got banned before for that. So, your arm need to do a proper circle to make sure you don’t Bend and throw. Running helps you to bowl fast.

South Africa v Australia. 1999 Semi Final World cup best one day game of all time. There's a bit of context to it. The game is Australia Playing South Africa in Semi Final, for the World cup (Happens once every 4 years) South Africa have already qualified for the Final, If Australia lose, South Africa will be playing some other team in the Final If Australia don't lose, then South Africa will be playing Australia in the Final. (This game is the semi final) South Africa really don't want to play Australia in the Final as they are the strongest team in the competition on paper. Jonte Rhodes a really good south African fielder, dropped Steve Waugh (the captain if memory serves me correctly) in a bizarre incident. Steve Waugh then says to Jonte, "You just dropped the world cup". Steve Waugh then follows up on his words. At the end of the innings South Africa only have a few runs to score, however one of their all time great bowlers and all time great batters make a remarkable stuff up for a bizarre finish. If your an Aussie, this is the best match ever, If your a South Africa, you never want to be reminded of this match ever again.

Here's what I know. Throwing (or pitching) wears out the shoulder and the elbow. Bowling can be bad on the shoulder, lower back (spine) and legs (feet), but not the elbow. Have you heard of Tommy Johns surgery. It is a surgical procedure that many baseball pitchers end up needing because of elbow injury due to prolonged throwing. I'm not saying cricket is a better game. Just explaining why the run up was developed. So that the ball can be delivered fast without using the elbow. Also, how fast do young kids pitch the ball? You don't have to be super strong to bowl fast in cricket. It's about rhythm and bowling action. The two sports are very different of course. As well as different throwing and bowling. Baseball has one main pitcher, whereas cricket has several bowlers. Also baseball and softball pitch on the full, cricket you can bounce it. Cricket used to have underarm bowling, like softball. It was never used except by little kids or when bowling to a kid or novice player. Until one day or night in a ODI match against New Zealand the Australians bowled it underarm rolling along the ground on the last ball so that NZ couldn't hit it for six. Underarm bowling was officially outlawed after that. New Zealand is still angry about it. Aw, give us a fair chance to beat you wont ya. kzbin.info/www/bejne/iqXEiKd3ra2Jqdk Please watch this video as Ritchie Benaud explains it all at the end.💖Ritchie B 😀kzbin.info/www/bejne/qXOZeqyLbJuhd6s

Everyone can pitch a ball in baseball, but not in cricket. It is an illegal delivery if you bend your arm. Not every cricketer has the ability to bowl in cricket, it needs a lot of skill to master it.

Short leg or silly point catch compilations , ( yea they are real positions on the field) . Fielders are less than 8 feet from the bat, catching full force shots in a split second bare handed.

I think you need to find some Aussies in the US that can bowl at you and all will become clear. (Wear a helmet!)

To tell you the truth..most of these were seamers..except for 2 or 3..If the ball moves off of the pitch then it is a seamer..using the seam to make the ball move away or into the batsman. Swing on the other hand is when it curves in the air before pitching.

Swing bowling has nothing to do with the spin on the ball, like a curve-ball or a slider. Swing bowling is closer to the, now outlawed, shine-ball. A lot of what you're seeing in this video is seam bowling, where the ball hits the pitch with the seam almost vertical. Hitting the seam then causes the ball to bounce with divination. As for the run-up, from what I remember, is estimated to give the bowler about 10% of their speed. Baseball pitchers, me being one back in the day, pitch with a whipping action, whereas a bowler must bowl with a stiff arm, which gives the pitchers an advantage. If you want to see real speed have a look at Jeff Thompson, he was clocked over 100mph after not playing for 18 months, some of the batsmen that faced him estimate he was up around 110mph in full fitness.

80 miles is pretty fast, spin bowlers could be around 50 mph.
