Nagano Prefecture is so attractive that it could be said that the entire prefecture is a tourist destination, a treasure trove of breathtaking autumn leaves! In Part 1 and Part 2, we will introduce 14 of the best autumn leaves viewing spots in Nagano Prefecture.
In the first part, we will introduce 6 autumn leaves spots, including "Tsugaike Nature Park and Hakuba Happo One", "Togakushi Plateau and Shiga Kogen Plateau", which are at their best from late September to early October, and "Kirigamine and Utsukushigahara", famous for the tourist road, Venus Line.
Enjoy the magnificent mountain scenery, lakes, marshes, and other scenery of autumn leaves, which are a spectacular feature of the autumn season!

Tsugaike Nature Park ( Late September - Early October )
Tsugaike Nature Park is located in the northwestern part of Nagano Prefecture, at an altitude of about 1,900m above sea level. On a clear day, you can enjoy a pleasant walk in the marshland and light hiking while enjoying a panoramic view of the three Hakuba mountains (Mt. Yarigatake, Mt. Shakushidake, and Mt. Shirouma).
Hakuba Happo One ( Late September ~ Early October )
Hakuba Happo One is a plateau where visitors can enjoy a panoramic view of the Northern Alps from above the clouds, and is a sacred place for trekkers. Trekking routes are maintained along the gently sloping ridgelines, which are reached by several gondolas and lifts, and visitors can enjoy light hiking while admiring the magnificent mountain scenery.
Togakushi Plateau ( Early to mid October )
Togakushi Plateau is located in the northern part of Nagano Prefecture and has been selected as one of the "100 best places for autumn leaves in Japan. The plateau stretches to the south of the "Togakushi Mountain Range" with its sheer cliffs, and Mount Togakushi has been the object of mountain worship since ancient times. Kagami-ike Pond, the most famous pond on the Togakushi Plateau, reflects the Togakushi mountain range on its surface when the wind is calm.
Shiga Kogen ( Early to mid-October )
Located in the northeastern part of Nagano Prefecture, Shiga Kogen is a plateau dotted with numerous beautiful ponds and marshes, and is an excellent trekking spot. There are a variety of hiking courses, such as the "Pond Tour Course," where you can enjoy forest bathing while strolling around the ponds and wetlands.
Kirigamine ( Early to mid-October )
Kirigamine is a plateau stretching around its highest peak, Kurumayama (1,925m), and is one of the "100 most famous mountains in Japan. Kirigamine is a highland area with a unique landscape of rolling hills, and if you look back a little further up the Kurumayama Shoulder Walk, you can enjoy an outstanding view of the surrounding mountains, including Mount Tateshina, Mount Yatsugatake, and Mount Fuji.
Yashima-gahara Marsh is a vast high-altitude marsh located in Kirigamine, and is designated as a "natural monument" by the national government.
Utsukushigahara ( Early to mid-October )
Utsukushigahara is a plateau located in the center of Nagano Prefecture and is one of the "100 most famous mountains in Japan. It takes about one hour to walk from the nearest parking lot to the highest peak in Utsukushigahara, O-ogashira (2,034 meters above sea level). On a fine day, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the surrounding mountains, including the Northern Alps.
