It's impressive to see how vampire films and the comedy genre were so linked in the 80s. This list is excellent. I loved. 💜🖤💜🖤 For me, Near Dark would be #1 if it had a better ending. I love how the vampires in this film have so much personality and originality.
@cobwebschannel11 ай бұрын
Hi, thank you! Near Dark really is an all-timer, and would be that much better if it ended differently.
@alienmindwarp345511 ай бұрын
@cobwebschannel I think the movie ended the only way it could, especially for the time it was made. Vampires aren't the good guys, no matter how cool they might be. Our protagonist escaped his excursion into a disparate vampire clan that had a family dynamic, but he needed to get back to his own family and to the land of the living. Was he supposed to live happily ever after with his new vampire family and spawn sequels or what is it that you imagine as a better or more appropriate ending? 🤔
@daniellewillis276711 ай бұрын
THANK YOU for understanding how much the end of Near Dark screws up an otherwise perfect movie. I thought the vampires should have escaped the hotel room and the little boy vampire should have been allowed to keep the sister. The protagonist should have had to kill his own father to save his gf and finally be fully accepted into the clan...the blood transfusion bs pissed me off.

My Best Friend is a Vampire? This is a great list by the way. Fright Night is my favorite too. And I also like Fright Night Part II. I have an awesome Fright Night t-shirt myself and I'm going to get to meet Tommy Lee Wallace at the Creature Feature Weekend convention I go to every year in Gettysburg, PA. I just had one little thing about this video. The Carradine that was in Sundown was David Carradine. John Carradine's son. Didn't know if you'd caught that already. Great video nonetheless.

I consider Fright Night 2 to be one of the best sequels of all time. In terms of visuals, practical effects, cinematography, and costuming, this movie is timeless. Julie Carmen is perfection as Jerry Dandridge's sister. The supporting cast is awesome and Charlie and Peter Vincent don't miss a step in reprising their roles.Charlie's chemistry with Alex is way more convinvincing than with Amy. I get your point about Charlie's amnesia, but that's just a comment on 80's psychoanalysis. I wish you had seen this movie sooner. I saw it as a kid. It had a very short theatrical release and I saw it a few years later on VHS. Nowadays, it's hard to get your hands on. I still have that original VHS. To this day, I always watch both movies back to back on Halloween weekend.

The scene that will always stick out to me with Near Dark is when the vampire who was turned as a child meets the little sister of the hero. The way you can tell he's looking at this little girl with a combo of lust and longing for someone who matches him physically because he's lonely seeing how he's stuck in the body of a child - is scary and sad at the same time.

Steven Jeffries has confirmed that Evil Ed was in the closet, struggling with his sexuality, and had feelings for Charley, and it is heavily implied that Jerry is bisexual and in an open relationship with Billy Cole. I saw Lifeforce in the cinema when it was released in the 1980s. It wasn't great, but when it came to the crowd scene with all the zombie/vampires, the entire hall burst out laughing. In fact, some people sang a few lines of "Thriller". It's been astonishing for me in the past couple of years to realise that it's considered a classic horror film. I'm delighted you mention The Hunger. I read Interview With A Vampire and The Hunger very close together in the early 80s. And then I saw the movie The Hunger. These are not your sparkly vampires! But so sexy and stylish. I'm surprised it isn't more feted by horror lovers. Perhaps it just isn't gory enough for modern tastes? I can't agree with you that The Lost Boys is successful BECAUSE it's so 80s. What else would it be? It's successful, IMO because it has reached through the decades beyond that. Good to see Vamp on your list, as well as Near Dark, though. And you've given me a few to look out for. :)

Great list! I'm so glad you think Vampire's Kiss is a "good movie". I hosted a movie night years ago and a lot of my friends came over to watch it. Everyone starting trashing the movie and it drove me nuts. Totally agree that it's a precursor to American Psycho. I don't know why people don't mention the screenwriter also wrote After Hours. I feel like that should be mentioned more when fans defend the movie. I'm also a huge fan of Near Dark. That bar scene is so good and Paxton's line, "finger lickin' good", is one of the best improv lines ever.

At the time Vampire's Kiss came out, it was definitely regarded as a fable about 80s corporate life as much as a horror film. It's a shame if that part isn't appreciated by younger film fans. Of course, in those days, Nicolas Cage was regarded as an actor, rather than a larger than life personality!
@dr.juerdotitsgo511911 ай бұрын
Nothing personal, but I think is bs when bad, nonsensical movies suddenly gets an aura of respect only because "oh, it supposed to be a social critique" or something. Even though American Psycho is quite ambiguous, it knows exactly what it's doing. Cage's bat shit crazy performance is legendary, though. "Bat shit", get it?

Fright Night is so good. One of my all time favourites. I used to have the computer theme (when it was possible to do cool stuff like that)so when I closed down the computer it let out that awful groan from Vampire Jerry when he was on the roof. I shat myself as I always forgot it was coming! Yay, Near Dark is also an exceptional movie. One of Bigelow's best and a fav trio of actors in Henriksen, Goldstein and Paxton. So different with that effortless cool so many of the 80's movies had. Sort of genius. So glad you included Vamp. This movie is never mentioned. Grace Jones is a legend. Vampire's Kiss - brilliant and dark. Also never talked about but a fav. Loved The Hunger. Very cool and quiet. And yay Lost Boys - an absolute classic. I did laugh at the inclusion of Return to Salem's Lot. I remember when it was first released I was so devastated that it was not like Salem's Lot (omg the trauma of that. I have to turn the cover of the DVD so I can't see the Master - fucking terrifying!)

Trivia/info on Fright Night Part 2: The henchman you thought was a werewolf, Louie played by John Gries, is actually a vampire. There's been confusion amongst viewers for years. But vampires are also shapeshifters and can assume wolf forms, as you mentioned. Much like Coppola's Dracula, this one takes a wolfman/werewolf looking form. His face in wolf form is very bat-like. But the biggest clue is his weakness to Roses and being killed by getting pierced through the heart.

Great list! I get your reaction to Monster Squad but I feel like kids of that era like myself were very also familiar with the Universal flicks - they aired on TV a LOT back then. The 1970's had seen a huge resurgence of classic monsters in every medium. So Monster Squad, to 12 year old me, felt like an update of, say, Abbott & Costello meet Frankenstein more than anything. And seeing those black and white monsters brought to life in vivid color with modern FX was EPIC for the time. I also feel like Regher's brutal Drac was a reaction against the romantic Dracula that had popped up everywhere since the late 70's. But Drac is a fairly standard villain in Monster Squad, despite his great bat transformations.

Thank you for showing "Vampire's Kiss" the love it deserves. It's a great movie. It might be regarded by some today as a bad vampire movie with an early example of Nic Cage's extreme acting style, but in the 80s this was considered a gem of an indie film with some clever satire and critiques. In the scene where Nic Cage eats a cockroach, he is really eating a live cockroach and it was even Nic's suggestion to the director that they do the scene using an actual live cockroach.

I remember clearly sitting on a small chair in the middle of my bedroom in the dark, inches from my second hand 9 inch black and white tv. My tv had just given up the ghost, so my Dad picked that up for me as a stop gap. I loved that tv though, with a radio style tuning knob on the side, and piece of wire for an aerial. Even on that small black and white screen, Fright Night was brilliant. I still watch it to this day, obviously on blu-ray now, but it's still probably my favourite vampire film. 😎👍

I like Fright Night Part II and Fright Night just about equally. There are some things about Part II that I like even more than the first.

Awesome video! Fright Night 1985 still is my favorite vampire movie. I love Fright Night 2, but I think it tries too hard to be like My Best Friend’s a Vampire or Once Bitten. I think Fright Night 2 would’ve been even better as a straight forward horror movie.

Man, another killer list. Fright Night is amazing but I haven't seen a few of the ones you mentioned, including Fright Night 2 and Return to Salem's Lot. This list may have given me the push to check them out. Have you seen My Best Friend is a Vampire (1987)? It's a fun one.

I have! There’s a video about Vestron on the channel where I discussed it. I like it, it’s probably #16.

I HAVE AN IMPORTANT REQUEST FOR YOU: I notice that most of the images you have shown come from ANALOG format. Where did you get them? HOW COULD I GET THEM?? Many, many thanks in advance, I await your response!!

My top two are the same but I'd flip them. Probably as I saw The Lost Boys when it came out & loved it for all the reasons you said but I didn't see Fright Night til much later. Good to see Vamp in there & I totally agree about Near Dark's ending.

Laura Hutton accent is what makes that roll work . I interviewed the guy who played Russ and the Confederate spider vampire and the dance instructor for the film

The Hunger has one of the greatest musical scenes, not in a musical. Bauhaus playing Bela Legosi's Dead in a vampire flick

I watched Fright Night for the first time last night and I just have to say....wow. I can't believe it took me that long to see it. Chris Sarandon is amazing, holy shit. That club scene....just wow. Incredible movie, I loved it.

I am glad that the original ending of Fright Night 1 was changed. I did not want Peter to be a vampire at the end. The bowling scene of Fright Night 2 was epic.

good list. Good to see Vamp, Lair of the White Worm and Fright Night Part 2. I would add a few titles: Graveyard Shift I, Desire also Graveyard Shift II which has its moments, but also the sequence of events/plot gets a little hard to follow at 1 point. You're unsure if things are real, or it's a dream sequence. But if you've never seen either of the Graveyard Shift movies with Silvio Oliviero (aka Michael A Miranda), I would recommend them. They used this very unconventional system with the vampire and sort of being psychically connected to their lovers. I always found it fascinating.

Let’s not forget that among its other winning qualities, Fright Night is a riff on Hitchcock’s Rear Window.

Totally agree with nr. 1. I've always been a fan of Fright Night, since it's release (I'm getting old..🤔). Perfect mix of horror & comedy, with enough suspense, a cool cast and awesome special/gore effects. Next to 'From Dusk Till Dawn' my favourite vampire movie. 😎👍

I saw Monster Squad for the first time as an adult but I saw it with my daughter who was very young at the time and it stuck with her and we still watch it together so it’s special to me.
