back in the day, if you had a psx it was almost a sin to have a 2d game. only exceptions where megaman games , castlevania, some excelent capcom fighters, metal slug games and Oddworld games. back in the mid late 90's it was all about playing with textured polygons. even if they looked like shit, it was the option everybody wanted. sprites where considered old school at that time. i was never into this trend. i loved my 2d sprite games. friends would tell me i was stuck in the past.

You capture my current problem. Me and my friend have been interested in playing retrogames but we both agree that early 3d is not what we want since they look like crap for the most part. We didn't even consider PSX as a platform for this reason. We can't really look at contemporary metacritic scores from the era since they are misleading.

it didn't help that Sony had an actual anti-2D policy in the west at the time. They made obstacles to approve games with 2D grahpics to be released in North America for the PS1 and PS2

Agreed lol the early 3D era in video games was the most shit looking era of all time lol even though it was a necessary step in game graphic evolution. But even after many ultra realistic and beautiful looking games have been made in the modern 3D era I prefer 2D sprites too, maybe it is me being stuck in the past but whatever I don't care I fucking love the artstyle that most 2D sprite games have.
