Top 15 Coasters I NEED to Re-Ride & Why - 3 Years Later

3 years ago on this day (well, not exactly on this day thanks to leap year) on March 1, 2021 I released a video of 15 coasters I need to re-ride and why. I got on just about all of them since then, so let's see how those re-rides shaped my opinions and which coasters I am adding to my list as of 2024.

I first rode the beast on the coaster stock weekend in prob 2017. Mystic timbers was new. I rode with an older guy who said that you have to wait for the front especially at night on the first time. He had been riding for decades. After cresting the lift hill we disappeared into the fog and darkness. It was the best night ride of my life. I wish I remembered who he was but when a seasoned enthusiast gives you some advice like that the lesson is take it. One of my greatest coaster memories.

One element about The Beast at night that people don't seem to consciously notice is the way the lights on the lift hill blind you as you go over the top. It makes that descent into the dark even better because it takes a few seconds for your eyes to adjust.

As a Kansas City native, those Prowler night rides are without a doubt the best ride experience in the park. Especially during Halloween Haunt when they’re blasting the spooky music throughout the park

Prowler night rides in the front are absolutely the best way to ride it. Really feels like you’re being whipped around through the woods on the back of a sprinting panther

For me, Copperhead Strike is very seat dependent. My first ride was in the back row, I thought it was good but nothing special. My second ride in the front row was REALLY great, the forces popped a lot more, and it really shocked me. That was the ride I was looking for and I loved it. Also the trick for Boulder Dash is ride in the front, it's the smoothest row, the forces are actually better in the front, and that wind in your face sensation, and night rides are legendary. Try to visit on a weekend in July to be able to get a night ride, or Haunt if possible, especially since fast passes at Lake Compounce are cheap if crowds are bad. One more thing, sorry for the yapping, Jersey Devil is pretty rough now, so be careful of that.

I 100% agree with your assessment of Copperhead Strike except my first ride was front row and I walked off saying it might be the most underrated coaster I’ve been on. My second ride was in the back row and I walked off saying “ohhhhh…now I get it.”

I found this as well. I really enjoyed Copperhead on my first rides in 2021, but found it to be a let down in 2023 until I got a 2nd row ride and it matched my memories. Near the back of the train the airtime seems to hit at weird moments when the train is slowing down - in the front car (row 1 or 2) it flows more naturally and the hangtime is really enhanced.

I'm glad to hear how much you love Rip Ride Rocket, considering I'm planning on visiting next year. TT2 is a different credit because it's a different ride. I rode The Beat at night in row 17 mid June '23 as a last night of the ride when it opens again after the fireworks and and it's and epic experience. I did the same w Orion and Diamondback was my last ride the other two nights.

For Tremors, I recommend row 3. Maximum floater airtime on all the speed hills. Source: it’s my home park, and I’ve tried all the rows multiple times.

Great list! As a St. Louis native, I've adopted Silver Dollar City as my "home park" because of how neglected our Six Flags is. Such a shame they've let The Boss and Screamn' Eagle get so rough. Those were both great coasters back in the day. Would love The Boss to get RMC'd. Screamn' Eagle, maybe some Titan track, idk something because it's a classic. Just fix the damn thing! Mr. Freeze is great, American Thunder and Batman are solid too. I'm not even asking Six Flags to give us something totally new, just fix what we have please!!

For me, I need to give El Toro and Magnum a fair shake. The former was days away from derailing so it was SUPER rough. Gonna try the 2nd to back row. And for Magnum, I only tried the magic seat not knowing much. Should have tried the back too. Both were painful to some degree. And yeah Lightning Rod is one I need to reride since these changes. Should be there this summer.

Toro is one of those coasters that you can get a great ride in pretty much any seat. That being said, second to last row is definitely better than the last, but my best rides came about 1/3 and 2/3 down the train. A little off the middle. The rolling Thunder Hill towards the front is brutal. In a good way.

Got a night ride on The Beast in summer 2023. One of very few times I've ever felt genuinely *scared* on a rollercoaster. The out of control feeling is amplified thanks to the lack of visual input, and you really get to hear the thing "roar".

Gale Force is my favorite non-Intamin/RMC/B&M. It exceeded my expectations by a lot. We are going to try to get back to the shore soon to ride it again!

also yes, jersey devil coaster was INSANE during my night ride. It felt like an entirely different coaster and was such a great experience. I didn't even get close to the back so I can't imagine how great it is there. Definitely wait for it to warm up

I also haven’t done the Beast at night, so that is a reride that is near the top of my list, along with Iron Gwazi. I got 4 rides all over the train, but I need to see how insane it is at night. Considering I loved riding SteVe at night, we definitely gotta see how Gwazi compares.

15 coasters I need to reride in random order: 1. El Loco- Last rode in 2018. Had some drinks in me. Need to ride it more objectively. 2. Canyon Blaster- Last rode in 2018- Same as above. 3. New Texas Giant- Last rode in 2019- They ran one train during Spring Break season and I thought it ran very slow at the end. Lowest ranked RMC of the 21 I've been on. 4. GoldStriker- Last rode in 2019. This is my top ranked GCI and I have now rode a bunch in Europe as well. Want to see if it still holds that top spot. 5. Maxx Force- Last rode in 2019. Need to give this a reride as it has slid down my rankings. Need to refresh my mind on it. 6. Raging Bull- Last rode in 2019. Need to give it another shot to compare it to other B&M hypers. One of my lowest ranked B&M hypers currently. 7. Cornball Express- Last rode in 2019. Really love it. Even got some Zen rides on it. Need to see if it still holds up. 8. Boardwalk Bullet- Last rode in 2020. Similar experience to yours. Rode it 3 times after it opened. Trains were not full. Didn't feel like it was running at full force. 9. Boss- Last Rode in 2020. I didn't think it was that bad. People really complaining about it now. Need to reride it. 10. Wicked cyclone- Last rode it in 2021. Thought it died at the end, Actually have Twisted Cyclone in front of it. 11. Superman the Ride- Last Rode it in 2021. I have ridden a fair amount of new gen intamins in the US and Europe and this one doesn't hold up for me. I have it at the Goliath at Walibi Holland level. 12. Boulder Dash- Last Rode in 2021. Similar experience to yours. Got like 3-4 rides on it after waiting around for it to finally open. I think it has potential. 13. Mine Blower- Last Rode in 2021. Need to give it a reride after the track work to see the difference. I think this one should happen this year. 14. Time Traveler- Last Rode in 2022. After riding Ride to Happiness I need to get back on Time Traveler. I think this will happen this year. 15. Prowler- Last Rode in 2022. I find myself liking Mystic Timbers more and more. Prowler should be the same. Need those night rides. This should happen this year as well.

Coasters I need to reride: Great Lego Race - only rode when I was little and hated it lol Dragon - also only rode as a kid. I liked it, but it's still been forever Scream Machine - got 2 bad rides, then a good one later in 2021. Now it got retracked so it should hopefully be better Vortex (Carowinds) - apparently it's terrible, but I didn't think so. Maybe the front isn't bad, or maybe my one ride was just that good Slinky Dog Dash - I enjoyed my 1 ride on this, but that was 2019 Mine Blower - the new track should make this way smoother Iron Gwazi - absolutely my #1 to reride. Got 2 rides, a weak morning ride and a relentless evening one. The crazier the coaster, the more times I need to ride it to get a solid opinion, so I really need to ride this again and actually rank it higher than Intimida-- sorry, Thunder Striker Coasters on your list: I've ridden RRR 5 times and it's always been pretty good. Also never had a bad ride on Copperhead, that's a great coaster. White Lightning definitely warms up later and is really fun.

I don't think Vortex is terrible, but it doesn't have any good qualities either. The whole ride, I was not in pain but just kind of bored.

In December, I was told by a local enthusiast that Mine Blower was only retracked in the drop and inversion, then the rest of the ride is just as horribly brutal as ever. After hearing that, I chose not to give it another try, even though I had a Fun Spot pass.

Impulse is one to not sleep on, for what it does, it's a fun ride. Those seats and the falling out feeling are something. The line issue is a thing, you have to hit it on the right day to get walk-on. I usually wait towards end of season (Aug/Sept), but I'm a local. Phoenix is almost walk on in the evenings until the 4th of July weekend, and end of August it goes walk on in the last few weeks of the parks daily operation. I don't disagree you you totally on Twister, but some of the work they've done on it might have gone too far in smoothing it out in the last 10 years.

The Beast at night is the best night ride you will ever have on any coaster. It's my personal favorite coaster. I'm a ride op at Kings Island and I'm hoping to make The Beast my main ride this season. I would love to meet you there this year. -Kyle

I'm not going to parks nearly as often as you are, but I find that Night Rides are harder to come by as so many parks have been closing earlier since the pandemic. I can't remember the last time I had a great Night Ride (yes, I capitalize that) on a great coaster. I have a vivid memory of Grizzly at Kings Dominion at night in 1999, just riding over and over. But I also love your #1 choice, I've had good to great rides on Rip Ride Rockit, and when it's running good, it's wonderful. I also love the SECRET song list which opens up a whole new window of riding. (Madonna's Vogue....it was a MOOD lol!)

2022 and then especially 2023, many parks returned to later closing times. Kings Dominion was back to 9pm last year from the 7pm of 2021. Kings Island was back to 10pm from the 8pm of 2021. Cedar Point was 11pm on weekdays in 2018, but they had already cut it to 10pm in 2019, and they have been back to that now. Last year, Worlds of Fun had brought back 10pm closings on weeknights, which shocked me. Valleyfair was also open to 10. Some Six Flags parks had late closings in 2021, then they scaled it back in 2022. Christmas season is a great time to get night rides for the parks that are open, and have rides open, at that time. Earlier sunsets than Halloween time, and far less crowded.

It shocks me that you still haven't had a night ride on the Beast. Even back before the re-track and despite all the roughness then, it was still one of the best coaster experiences to be had. Tremors was insanely good last year. I was getting ridiculous amounts of airtime and while the wood parts were still a little rough it wasn't bad enough to detract from the experience. Plus, I think you'll really like Stunt Pilot.

Lake Compounce is my home park, but I’ve never gotten the appeal of Boulderdash. It’s a rough coaster and it’s kind of short honestly for what it is. I spent most of my life being terrified of roller coasters, and one day I decided to go on Phobia Phear to get over my Phear and on the same trip when on Boulderdash. I get that it breaks records, but it didn’t break anything for me, except for my back lol.

I honestly like Rip Ride Rockit. I don’t love at much as you do, but the non inverting loop is bonkers, there’s good force going into the break runs up front, and I don’t have to apologize for loving a roller coaster that allows me to listen to Kickstart My Heart while riding

a coaster i definitly need a re-ride on is twisted timbers at kings dominion. after riding twisted cyclone and ArieForce One last year i know what a RMC can really feel like, and feel my hate on timbers may be unwarranted.

Rip Ride Rockit was interesting for me. I hated that thing in 2017, but got rerides last year and found it pretty good, as long as you don't sit in rows 3 or 6, at which point it was unbearably rough. 5 is probably best. Definitely a forceful ride with good air time. I will say though after a day of riding that, Mummy, and White Lightning, I did find my thighs bruised when I went to shower before bed.

My big one is Wisp Resort's alpine coaster. Is it really as good as I remember or am I just clouded by how much that 1 ride blew away my expectations? Is my first coaster evac playing any roll in how much I loved it? Is it me overrating it or that not enough enthusiasts have ridden it? All that said it'll be a while, living in the Pacific Northwest I can't exactly just go reride an alpine coaster in Maryland. And in talking rerides, Candymonium shot up in my rankings this past year, going from below Comet (wouldn't be this season even if running as forceless as my first few rides, those new trains will kill the ride. RIP Comet 1946-2023) to a respectable #4 in the park.

For me the biggest reride priorities are Behemoth and Leviathan at Canada's Wonderland. My only rides were on Nov 1st, 2015 and it was below freezing. Behemoth was a walk-on so the trains weren't particularly full either. Levi was a little bit of a wait and had full trains, but 90 mph in 30 degF made my face hurt so I only got 2 rides (they were in the back and row 2 at least). I remember thinking Levi felt an element or 2 short and preferring Behemoth for that reason. But I really have a hard time ranking either of them. I'm still shocked that a Cedar Fair park was running their B&Ms in such temperatures - but I know SFGAdv is known for running Nitro in all in conditions.

Why did you say "triangle wheels at best," implying that they'd be better than square wheels and not significantly worse? You need to add more sides to make them better, so "Hexagon wheels at best" would've worked.

So you were able to hit up Idlewild, Lakemont, del Grosso, AND Knoebels in a single day?? My summer coaster trip this year I had planned on doing those first 3 in one day but recently saw Lakemont isn't opening for 2024 so I pivoted and replaced Del Grosso with Knoebels for a Idlewild and Knoebels 1-2 punch? So I'm hearing it's possible to also hit up Del Grosso in between the two??

I wouldn't go as far to say The Prowler is the "poor mans' Mystic Timbers". Hopefully a night ride will improve your opinion on it. The night rides were even better before they built the new Zinger though, when there was no lights off in the distance to help you regain your bearings a bit after the turn around.

Phoenix was a walk-on!? That is shocking to hear. I thought it always had over an hour wait. Impulse was quite a bit shorter for me. I found it to be decent, on par with an average Euro-Fighter. It's a distant # 3 coaster at the park. Boardwalk Bullet: I got fully warmed up, half-full trains on my rides, and it was so amazing. On my next visit a few months ago, I got 2 morning rides, with only me on the train. That was dramatically slower. It makes a huge difference. I also need to reride Boulder Dash. I was underwhelmed. I thought GaleForce was rough and quite uncomfortable. Jersey Devil felt exactly the same for me from July 2021 & July 2022, a mediocre looper with decent airtime if you're in the back, and a very painful sitting position. The ride felt equally mediocre in the morning and at night on both visits. I need to get back on Great Escape's Comet and Swamp Fox, to see if I underrated them. Also Gold Striker, to see if I'm overrating it. Over 200 rides in on Prowler, and around 50 night rides, and I still stand by it. Mystic Timbers only wishes it was as good as Prowler. MT is smoother, but Prowler is far more intense, more creative layout, better setting, no assigned seating, and stronger airtime.

You can easily do both in one day, they're about 30 min apart. Just depends how much you wanna ride AF1

Ahh, The Beast. She run faster at night. I knew you're not a fan of the front but you've got to try it in the front at night with no lights around. To get a good, and pure night run, you're going to have to go late in the season because even at 9:30 p.m. here in the middle of summer it is still enough light that you don't get that true night run. I find it best to go for the Haunt to get your night run

I am counting on a Screamin' Eagle retrack for its 50th because I'm tired of everyone saying it's better than American Thunder and then their last ride on it was pre-2023. I care deeply for my home park, and the coaster was great the first time I rode it 20 years ago but it seems like 0 maintenance is going in to the ride over those 20 years.

I need a reride on steel vengeance. I’m tall so Rmc trains don’t always love my legs and I got stapled which caused my leg to cramp ruining my ride. I’ve loved the other rmc’s I’ve road (lightning rod and twisted timbers) so I gotta give the king another chance.

Intimidator 305 (or whatever it's new name will be) is the only coaster I truly NEED to get back to reride. I genuinely don't know where to place this in my rankings because it's been over 10 years.

I re rode RIP Ride Rockit in 2021 and it gave me one of the worst headaches I've ever had. Like you I absolutely loved it, but after the last ride I got I'm in favor of demolishing it and putting something new on the plot of land.

IMO if a coaster needs be ridden at a specific time, temperature, and with certain number of people is it even a “good coaster” or just home park hype. EX: I could ride steel vengeance first thing in the morning, by myself, and in any row… and it’s still gonna be one of the best in the world.

I totally agree. That's why I knock down rides like Iron Gwazi. Ive gotten amazing rides on Wicked Cyclone right after opening, so I got it ranked higher

I rode Gale Force both before and after the retrack and hated both times, so going back for another ride will probably not change anything except how long you wait. There better ways to spend even 20mins than waiting for Gale Force

Don't listen to naysayers on RRR. It's fantastic. I don't personally put it in my top 20 but it's an excellent ride. The airtime delivers, the restraints are comfortable, the song choice is a fun addition, it's long and the non-inverting loop is amazing. Yes it has lots of MCBRs but I really don't think they hurt to ride and each one starts and ends with airtime. It does have a rattle but i wouldn't call it rough.

When I was at SFSL I asked the locals about The Boss, and they told me it was too brutal to ride, but Screamin Eagle was smooth. I regret listening to them. It was the most painful coaster experience I've ever had. It slammed by back against the backrest so often and so hard it knocked the wind out of me and left my lungs feeling bruised. It was hard to breathe for the next day. Glad to see I'm not the only one who thinks this thing is more brutal than The Boss. It was worse than Wildcat at Lake Compounce after the retrack in 2019. And thats sayig something.

I mean the thing about wooden coasters is that the ride literally changes every year depending on maintenance, weather, time of day, whether you ride early in the season after tetra is or late in the season after the ride has torn itself apart …

Nothing comes close to a reride on Cornball Express for me. I rode it once as a kid and it was so bad that it’s currently my least favorite coaster. Now that I’ve been on other things, I need to get back on. It would probably be in the upper half of my rankings with a reride.

Wow, it's kinda shocking that most of these roller coasters are wooden, and especially GCI's. Thinking and hearing about Wooden coasters (and specifically GCI), Lagoon seriously needs a more modern wooden roller coaster. Also, I hope that if I'm able to go to Silverwood, I'll be able to ride every single coaster, and that rmc doesn't advertise that they're making an Ibox coaster there after I go...
