I don't think it's fair to fully credit the film as a Blue Sky film at this point. As one of the many How Do You Live translators over the world, I really couldn't wait for your opinion on it, and man am I glad you got what the movie is all about. When I left the theatre premiere, I was hearing people talking about how they didn't really get it, and how they would rather wait for random KZbin people to explain the movie to them, while I was just walking by and thinking how clear it is in its message. Then again, I did have to watch it, like, three times before the premiere, so I had a bit of a headstart in that regard. I'm just glad Miyazaki got to put all of his favorite things into a single picture, and I sincerely hope he breaks the curse of his family (apparently no one lived beyond 80 among his relatives?) and lives long enough to give us something else. Then again, even if he doesn't, a sendoff like this would be more than worthy of a man of his caliber.

I have a hunch that “How Do You Live/The Boy And The Heron” will gain a cult following in the years to follow. Initially, “Howl’s Moving Castle” also took a while for critics and audiences in the U.S. to finally warm up to the film. Although it wasn’t massively hated, many people were confused by the story, and some were turned off by the anti-war message (for context, the Iraq War was going on at the time, and 2004-2005 was a different political climate in the U.S. than it is today). Fast forward to the 2020’s, and “Howl’s Moving Castle” has gained a cult classic status. I think “How Do You Live” will go through the same fate, and possibly many more people will reevaluate the film especially after that inevitable day comes that Miyazaki will pass on.

It’s one of my favorite films of all time, and it deeply affected me on a personal level. It saddens me to hear that people don’t feel they understand it (my family in the theatre also). Across the Spiderverse is a masterpiece in almost every way, and it sucks how much it's being absolutely snubbed at the Oscars this year. It's definitely a shoe-in for best animated feature, but really? It wasn't worthy of any other award? It deserves best original score far more than Dial of Destiny ever did. Daniel Pemberton deserves so much more recognition. The academy needs to recognize Animation as the fantastic, respectable medium it is.

It was also kind of the Everything Everywhere All At Once of 2023 in at least one aspect. It was one of those movies that the people who knew about hoped it would do well, and I think even they were surprised by how good it was and how much of a hit it became. It's one of those movies with lofty ambitions, yet everything came together perfectly, and it took the world by storm by still doing what it needed to do and so much more. In fact, I think the only reason it wasn't as big of an awards-season hit as EEAAO is because it came out so late in the year. EEAAO benefitted by coming out in March/April, and was still being talked about by the end of the year. Had Minus One come out earlier in the year, I'm sure there'd be more awards-season buzz for it.

In an NHK documentary about the years leading to The Boy And The Heron's production / BTS of the film, Miyazaki actually explains he modeled the boy after himself, and the granduncle is actually Isao Takahata, his mentor and colleague who sadly passed away. Finally, the Heron is inspired by his producer Suzuki. Their relationship is at the core of the film :)

Godzilla Minus One was one of the best experiences I’ve had in a movie theatre. It was phenomenal, and I feel sad for all the people who didn’t get to see it before it left theaters. One detail that I only recently picked up was whenever the characters are talking about Godzilla, the monster’s footsteps are played very subtly on the theatre’s subwoofers, as if he’s approaching. Just amazing. Also, it has my favorite film score. The best tracks in the movie are “Fear”, “Divine”, “Unscathed”, “Resolution”, and “Last”. Give these a listen, they’re great.

What I loved the most about Holdovers is how they put a spin on its tropes, making them jerks with bonafide hearts of gold. Paul may seem like a curmudgeonly snob, but in reality, he has a strong sense of morality that puts him at odds with the ethically questionable personnel at the school, and causes him to be closed minded. And Angus is shown to be in a lot of pain over his mom abandoning him, but it also helps him relate to other kids who have similar struggles. I absolutely loved their dynamic, where they would not be afraid to talk about how much of a pain in the ass they are toward each other, but are wholeheartedly willing to help each other when the chips are down. There was also this scene in the near the end where Angus sneaks out on Paul and Paul was about to go on his speech on how Angus broke his trust, and I was like "here we go, the third act misunderstanding fallout scene", but NO! Angus confesses about his dad being alive, and it made me realize that the whole reason he wanted to go to Boston in the first place was to see his dad.

@@trixxart777 I mean from what I've heard (I didn't see Wish), Wish has a lot of references to other Disney animated movies in it, so I'm not sure if the movie itself was trying to stand on its own. Also if you're mad that people are comparing other animated movies from this year to Wish, don't worry I'm sure in a year or two that'll die down. Remember when everyone was negatively comparing other animated movies to The Emoji Movie, and now no one talks about that? I'm sure the same thing will likely happen with Wish in due time.

We didn't get a lot of _animated_ movies specifically, but whatever we got was great too, Nimona and your two entries in the top 15 were great and I'm glad that Wish didn't get a single recognition in the best picture, it's the kind of movie that deserves to never be talked about again.

It’s a bit of a whiplash, since both films are the types of films that need second or multiple viewings to grasp what the film is about. Though, I do respect Schaff’s opinion of “Howl’s Moving Castle” (even though I personally like the film and consider it my second favorite Ghibli film behind “Castle In The Sky”), and I did like “The Boy And The Heron” and I can see where he’s coming from listening to his passionate speech about the film. Seeing how James experienced loss not too long ago, the film probably struck a chord with him.

@@christopherl5239 I see myself, my life in the movie, which is probably why it hit so hard for me. Visually: utterly beautiful. had scenes inspired by classic art (which is something I studied so I recognized it in theatres) by Böcklin (The Isle of the Dead and The Island of LIfe) and Millet (general light usage and pastoral scenes). Great use of different styles to indicate different states of mind. Fluid movement. Musically: Not my favorite, but it had its moments. The use of silence and space was very striking. Sound Design: gorgeous. A lot of care was taken in all of the natural, magical, and human sounds. Symbolism: There's a lot to unpack--- it helped that I read up on some Japanese literary symbolism, and have an understanding of Western art symbolism. Plot: Difficult to ascertain (I've also only seen it once so I won't be perfect). Mahito is deeply distressed by the loss of his mother, whether he's willing to emote it or not. So depressed, in fact, that he would rather isolate himself than be supported for fear of hurting others. And he so wants isolation that he is willing to harm himself deeply to get it. He wants to be in his own world, not forced into loving his "new mom," or into doing schoolwork, or whatever. But through the adventures he goes on, he sees that the past version of his mom is willing to go through any kind of pain for the joy of having a son like him, and he eventually sees that he *can* move past his trauma and keep living and even be happy. He is constantly waiting for the Heron to guide him places at the beginning of the adventure, unwilling to take initiative or control in his life. Nor is he willing to complete any mundane duty anymore. But there is a point he comes to understand that not only does he need to take initiative, he *wants* to. When his uncle offers him the blocks, he realizes that not only would he taint the blocks, but he doesn't want them anyway. He needs to return to the real world, face his situation, and bring back his dad's new wife. And by the end, he willingly shows her affection.

I was analyzing every scene with my eyes and ears. I would even say that it’s Miyazaki’s most magnificent film animation wise. It’s true the story was secondary, but that’s ok.
