I lived in China for four years. Seeing someone with a surgical mask is extremely common due to (a) smog, (b) bronchitis (often from the smog), or (c) some other sickness--Chinese folks wear medical masks all the time when they are sick. Also, someone taking your picture is very common, ESPECIALLY if you're a foreigner. Now, granted, that guy was sorta pushing it, but generally what Western folks consider creepy is not what Chinese consider creepy.

This is incredibly true (I also lived in China for a bit). It's possible that the man had no ill intentions. I also had my fair share in pictures being taken by locals. I actually find it a bit endearing and not bothersome at all. Besides, most people tend to ask anyway.

+Jack Belden Well, cuz they generally don't see them very often and/or they see foreigners as far more attractive (mostly whites, though; a lot of Asian folk buy the whole white supremacy thing or at least the idea that white is the most attractive). Plus, its harder for a Chinese person to leave the country than it is for a foreigner to enter, so they don't get out much (this would explain why a lot of Chinese movies are about or include traveling to other countries). Going back to the whole white-is-better attitude, Chinese girls will cut their eyelids, carry parasols to block sunlight to keep their skin pale and whitish, and saturate their skin with God-knows-what to make it look whiter to the point where they look more unnatural rather than white. The Chinese attitude toward darker skin is generally that darker skin means you work outside in the sun all day, which would mean you are probably a poor farmer or filthy construction worker, and therefore not refined or beautiful. You will LITERALLY see hordes of parasols because of this on a bright, sunny day: no joke--it's ridiculous.

My man, and I were just talking about this the other night.... We both think it is definitely the courteous, and right thing to do. Especially when you are sick. But, to my understanding, they also do it because of how overly populated Asia is. (There for the chances of catching an illness is more likely.) I wish more people practiced this. my thing is - if this is about the kids in #8 - if they didn't want to be filmed they could have just walked away instead of mobbing him. Man, I've been followed too at my university. It didn't happen again, but it was creepy. The guy stood in front of my table and stared at me, but I just ignored him. Then I left to my class, then he followed me. I ran into the restroom and waited a while. I came out and he was waiting outside pretending to mess with his backpack, and I ran to the elevator before he saw me. He was going to the class next to mine, but still, it was weird. He approached me another time asking me to do art for him, I said no and he went away. I was creeped out. The last time I saw him, I was sitting at a table and another guy sat in front of me to work on his laptop. The weird stalker dude came and tried to approach me, but the guy in front of me gave him a look for getting close to him and the weird stalker guy went away. I saw him walk away flailing his arms. Maybe he had a thing for me, but he shouldn't have been creepy about it. I already have a boyfriend, so I would have said no anyways.

Not really, since even in the US during flu season you see people wearing those masks all over the place. There isn't anything creepy about a mask to keep you from breathing in particulates. That's one of the most mundane things I've ever heard of. Not just in Japan, are you not aware that the motivations to wear one of these types of masks are not isolated to Japan? Sickness and pollution definitely exist in other places, because duh. So yeah...

Axx Kxx :: even with probable cause it’s only common areas. Especially with warrants they typically are for specific areas or people if they aren’t then they are only for common areas that whatever they are looking for could be. So if they’re looking into a person for murder they cannot search their parents bedroom for a gun. But, they can search their rooms and the rest of the property

A lot of people where surgical masks in China to avoid being tracked by face recognition also to avoid inhaling the highly polluted air. It seems uncommon in the states but it's pretty common there. Nothing scary about it. Also, maybe the guy getting close to the streamer was just making a point. It's fucking rude to record people without their consent. I'd be pissed too. As a parent, if I saw some creepy older guy recording kids I'd be pretty pissed as well. You honestly can't be too careful these days.

#12, the guy in the surgical mask may have been trying to get a good picture of the selfie stick to show his friends or family, maybe he hasnt seen a selfie stick before and wanted to ask they people he knew, what it could be? Also, he might have not spoke the same language as the streamer so he probably couldnt directly ask the streamer what the device was? #8, I feel so bad for the man who was harassed by kids, it made me tear up. I love his voice and accent and he seems like such a kind person. #4, I seen the original of this video, I think it was the guys best friend playing a prank on him unless that was another video. I know I saw one where the friend yelled at the guy at the end and the guy ended up being jokingly pissed off at the friend for the prank but I cant remember if it was recorded during the day or at night. #3, I think they both were in the wrong. The older man could have asked nicely or walked away from the camera but after touching or pushing the camera away, the streamer should have apologized and walked away instead of further instigating a conflict.
