For the most part, I thought this was a good list. Dan Marino not being on this list surprised me as many people agree that he had the strongest arm in NFL history pre-1990. My personal pick for strongest arm ever is Jeff George. This is a very opinion based topic, but I think George's motion and film support this statement. George threw the ball with a unique grip where his index finger was placed behind the football, at the back tip, which allowed him to give the ball an extra push. He could make amazing throws without even moving his hips and his velocity was ridiculous. I think another guy that should've been on this list is Jamarcus Russell. He could throw 70 yards while on his knees. Thanks for not including Brady btw. A lot of people try to start and end this conversation with the near completion to Moss in SB 42.

I was at an Apple Cup game during a full blown blizzard. Bledsoe was throwing darts 50 yards into a full gale and snow. Probably the most impressive throwing display I've seen. I remember Seattle wanted him SO badly but instead they ended up with the #2 pick and took Rick Mirer. We all know how THAT worked out!lol!

Haven’t watched Justin Herbert enough to know. Other than that, I’d have Jeff George at number 2. Distance isn’t the only measure of arm strength. This dude used to throw 40 yards beyond scrimmage with the ball barely getting above the players’ heads. He was a freak of nature. Maybe a bit nuts but definitely one of the top physical talents.

That throw @ 7:52 is insane. 70 yards off balance and it was a laser. ARod has the best arm I've ever seen in watching football for 30 years (personally would have had Jeff George #2 as his arm was also insane but as you mentioned he had an arm from Olympus and a brain from the local flop house).

I am sure that very few of you will know the quarterback that I am thinking of as having the strongest arm. That person is Bobby Douglass of the Chicago Bears. In my mind, he threw harder than any of the ones posted in the list. The problem with Dougless was he threw that hard even if it was a five yard pass. He couldn't throw a soft pass. But, boy, what an arm!!! He could throw a 50-yard pass with very little arch.

Great list. I’m glad you had Jones & Bradshaw. I would’ve added Namath as well. Back & forth on Marino-quickest release ever but his bombs didn’t zoom quite as much as the others. Still, Rodgers is a fair #1 given that he had downfield strength, velocity, tight spiral & accuracy. Yet the arm that seemed to create the most vapor trails behind it for me was Jeff George. He barely flicked his wrist from the back foot & his throws looked like Roberto Clemente throwing out a runner from deep right.

I randomly played in a flag football game where the two QBs were Marc Brunel and Vince Young. Two things I remember from that game…1) Marc Brunel was intercepted 3 times, and 2) It looked like Vince Young literally just snapped his wrist, and the ball flew so high and so far. I remember I literally stopped playing and just watched the ball soar through the air lol. I would love to see these QBs throw in person (I.e. not from the stands). Oh yea, I almost intercepted Vince Young, but I managed to log a pass defended lol

*Honorable mention: Baker Mayfield* *Although he has comparable arm strength to Josh Allen and Mahomes (75+ air yard pass; longest pass by PFF), he often gets discredited due to his inconsistency at times.* *Although his outstanding deep ball accuracy leads to a lot of splash plays and highlights, Baker's extreme overconfidence in his throwing ability leads to a lot of untimely sacks and back-breaking number of interceptions (just like his idol, Brett Favre). This is why you almost never see him slide or throw the ball out of bounds.* *Ex: 3 INTs vs the Texans Week 14 of 2018, 3 INTs vs. the Ravens Week 17 of 2018, 3 INTs vs Titans Week 1 of 2019, 3 INTs vs. the Bengals Week 17 of 2019, 4 INTs vs. the Packers in Week 16 of 2021.*

I saw Cunningham play against the Giants in Giant stadium. He was midfield and a rusher was around his feet, so he couldn’t step into the throw. He saw someone open downfield to his left, saw a guy open on the sideline and flicked it downfield 55 yards plus the sideways length hitting the guy in the hands (although incomplete, as I recall). It was a windy day, so that might have helped, but I was gobsmacked all the same that he could through the ball that effortlessly, long, and accurately with a guy at his feet and no ability to step into the throw.

So true regarding the never ending debate between young and old generations regarding John Elway. A lot of the young generation bases their opinions on stats (it’s a stat driven fantasy world in 2023) but Elway was f’n special. A lot of young people don’t know how good of a scrambler he was as well.
