I appreciate the effort, it must be a ton of work. What I'd like to see (or rather hear!) in this kind of video is a mini review of each map. For example: about walking through Witcher 3 I enjoyed xxx but disliked yyy. Or maybe some info about means of transport in the game. In general I feel your videos could gain a lot if you spoke a bit more, especially because your voice is pretty good (even if sometimes you sound a tiny bit too enthusiastic :D)

Its a little complicated because anyone can create an endless map using random generation like Minecraft. So should they even count? Seems a bit like cheating. Then you have maps that are seemingly completely handcrafted. Then you have games that use a combination of randomly generated terrain that's later improved by hand (like Oblivion I believe). Where is the line of what games count? I could create a map bigger then all of these right now, but it would just be a vast empty space of nothingness. Obviously shouldn't count. What if I added some bushes and grass to it? Is that good enough to count? Even a random game like Minecraft has some handcrafted ingredients like the houses in the villages, very few games have no randomly generate aspects to them. Most games are some kind of mix. The Euro Truck Simulator 2 map is gigantic but is mostly empty space, only the areas around the roads are fully detailed because you can only move on the road, so should racing games even count unless you have the freedom to drive anywhere? In the end it doesn't really matter I guess. What matters the most is how fleshed out and detailed the map actually is. I wonder what the biggest and most detailed/interesting map out there is.

Dying Light and Dying Light 2 aren't supremely gargantuan, but they should definitely make this list when you have a chance to add them.
@HowBigistheMap2 жыл бұрын
The Dead Island and Dying Light games are awesome!! I love these games. The maps are very detailed and dense, but they aren't really big. I walked across the map in Dying Light in only 22 minutes: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pWfcZoWXmtGYldE
@33jamesds2 жыл бұрын
@@HowBigistheMap Are you certain it's not a factor of the character's movement speed? The first Dying Light has 3 maps, and the 3rd one, which came with a dlc update, basically doubles the size of the entire game. The countryside in Dying Light 1 is several km from one side to the other, and even the city areas are similar in size, but the character moves quickly and the maps are broken up into 3 different areas defined by loading screens in between. Basically, if you add the walk time together for all 3 of those maps, there's no way it could possibly only be 22 minutes.....even as fast as Kyle's fast walking jog is. For dying like 2, the character literally only has run and sprint as options, and again, the two largest areas are separated by a loading screen, but if the character were to walk at the crawling pace you've defined as x1 walking, it would be impossible for the game to be that short. The larger of the two maps is roughly 1.5 km across at its longest point, and then the Old Villedor map is probably at least 1 km from one side to the other. Again though, I know the game map isn't massive, but I sincerely find it hard to believe that Skyrim, for example, is so much dramatically larger, that this game doesn't even compare. I think the character's movement speed is deceptive, but I freely admit that I could be overthinking this.
@HowBigistheMap2 жыл бұрын
@@33jamesds Thanks for your clear explanation. But even if you double the time, 22 min. x 2 = 44 min, then it still can't be in this top 175. Nr. 175 in this list is 47 minutes. But I agree, the character in Skyrim is walking like an old criple snale.
@33jamesds2 жыл бұрын
@@HowBigistheMap So how long did it take to walk between the two farthest points in The Countryside by itself? If your calculations are based only on character movement speed and not on the actual size of the map, I'm just not certain that all the variables are being properly factored in. Like State of Decay 2 and Dying Light both tell you in Meters how far things are apart, but if walking or crouching in State of Decay takes you longer to walk 1000 meters than it takes Kyle Crane to walk the same distance in Dying Light, well, do you kind of see my point? Lol. I suppose the literal amount of time it takes the character to get across the map based on the limitations placed on that character is an important factor, but if two games take a different amount of time for characters to cross a similar distance, I don't know that it's fair to say one is "bigger" than the other simply because it takes more real-world time to cross the distance. Like in real life, if I walk a mile or jog a mile, I still have a mile's worth of distance within which I have free range to move about as I will. I just think if the name of the channel is "How big is the map?" That the parameters of your focus might benefit from a bit more discussion. Other people mentioned that you might include voice over discussions of each experience that might shed some light on the nuance in these differences. For the record, I apologize if this sounds condescending at any point because that's not my intention.
