EPISODE NOTE - ROBINSON CRUSOE ON MARS: I realize there has been a wee bit of confusion during the "Robinson Crusoe on Mars" segment. What I was saying there was that George Pal produced "War of the Worlds." But I can see how it sounded like I meant he produced "Robinson Crusoe on Mars."

To see Robinson Crusoe on Mars on the big screen must have been amazing. I would love, even still, to be able to do that. These lists are purely subjective. Fantastic Voyage is a very neat film, but not one I grew up with or have any kind of attachment to. Thanks, Richard.

The Last Man On Earth was the first film adaptation of the novel I Am Legend, and the screenplay was written by Richard Matheson-the novel’s author. Of course, Matheson was not happy with the way the film turned out so he’s credited under a pseudonym: he didn’t want his name on the movie… Note also that this film was a big inspiration for George Romero when he wrote Night of the Living Dead script. In I Am Legend, the infected are vampires: drinking blood, afraid of mirrors and crosses etc. Last Man On Earth treats them as vampires also, but also slow moving, violent, hollow-eyed monsters. And it’s these latter behaviors that Romero adopted for the zombies in his film series.
@AtomicSnackBar
@AtomicSnackBar 3 ай бұрын
Not happy with the film, eh? I wonder what he thought about the Omega Man. Though I like both quite a bit. And I can certainly see the similarities between Night and Last Man. I don't think The Last Man on Earth gets the credit it deserves for helping to create that genre. Same with The Earth Dies Screaming.

Another film that could be included is Planet Of The Vampires, an Italian film about two exploratory spaceships that land on a strange eerie planet after receiving a distress signal. One of ships inexplicably goes radio silent so the other crew investigates-and the sci-fi horror begins! If it sounds a bit like Alien it’s not surprising as this film influenced Dan O’Bannon when he wrote the script for Alien… Story, sets, acting, effects hold up , but the horror elements are what really distinguish it.

The measure of a truly great film is whether the story it tells remains relevant with the passage of time. George Pal's 1960 film 'The Time Machine' achieves this, I think. When the time traveller arrives in the year 800,000AD he encounters the beautiful Eloi leading an idyllic existence in a new Eden but soon realises they are not the dominant race. In return for a life free from hardship and strife they have given up education, literacy, creativity, and technological advancement. They are the sheep and the Morlocks are the farmer. It is well worth reading the original story written in 1895 if only to discover why museum exhibits can lead to disappointment in stressful situations. Trivia Fun Fact: The Über-Morlock from the 2002 remake was the inspiration for the Controller character seen in the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. computer games.
@AtomicSnackBar
@AtomicSnackBar Жыл бұрын
Very well said. I fully agree. And whereas I didn't have a problem with the remake, it just didn't have the timeless quality, or the charm, of the Pal version. But to be fair, I do live in the past. I have a collection of H.G.Wells stories on my Amazon list, which includes The Time Machine. I just need to get around to picking it up. So many books though, so little time. I'm not familiar with the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. games. But that is a neat tidbit. I am quite the video game fan. Thanks for watching, Henry.

Thanks for the video. Having fun going thru these videos for first time, even tho they are years old in some cases. They just never really came across my deck before. Er, hate to be "Mr. Irritating Correction Man", but...George Pal had nada to do with ROBINSON CRUSOE ON MARS. Aubrey Schenck was the producer. This is a VERY common mistake. Also, the original title was, in fact, ROBINSON CRUSOE ON MARS. Haskin was the one who wanted the title changed to GRAVITY PROBE 1 because he hated the "Disney-like" title. The studio nixed that change. (Ib Melchior said that his title, or ROBINSON CRUSOE ON MARS was just a "place holder", a kind of short-hand description of the film's theme, BUT...the studio stuck with it. THE TIME MACHINE is a real favorite, along with THE LAST MAN ON EARTH. We interviewed Richard Matheson some 15-ish years ago and even he had to admit that it was, after all, the best version of his novel, even tho he had a lot of criticisms of it. It was a reluctant admission, but an honest realization.

PLANET OF THE APES drew SOME inspiration from WORLD WITHOUT END, which, it has been suggested, drew inspiration from THE TIME MACHINE (the novel, that is). Great choices all. Of course, sci-fi is my favorite genre, so I'm biased. Robinson Crusoe on Mars is SO underrated. Thanks for including that one. George Pal knew how to entertain his audience. Check out The Seven Faces of Dr. Lau if you haven't seen that one. The original Time Machine novel reads at times like a horror story. H.G.Wells was 'da Man. OMG! Escape from the Planet of the Apes is my favorite (not to take anything away from the original) too! The plot is actually very similar to the French novel(in France it was called: Monkey Planet). I met Vincent Price when I was a student in college. He epitomized the term: Gentleman. What a great screen presence as well. I always enjoyed his performances. Another entertaining video. Keep 'em coming'.

I really didn't realize what an interesting and talented guy George Pal was until I started doing the research for this episode. Director, producer, and animator. I just ran to look up 7 Faces of Dr. Lao and the poster alone has me intrigued. Thanks for the recommendation! I really do need to start reading some H.G.Wells. It's just when I do have free time to read, I always find myself going back to Philip Jose Farmer. I'm trying to read and collect everything he's ever done. A daunting task, to say the least. I did though force myself to buy something else and get a Robert Bloch collection. Monkey Planet certainly has a lighter sound to it. It almost sounds like a fun place to visit. But I was thinking about Escape from....and a big part of the appeal is that Cornelius is front and center. At least, that is the appeal for me. Thanks so much dropping by, Tony. It's great to hear from you again.

Yeah Roddy McDowell made that series continue to work. When I was in high school, the movie series had just finished and one of the kids I met doing theater found out I could do a dead on imitation of Cornelius saying:"Zira!" It would put him on the floor with laughter. I was 'ape' for those movies growing up.

Haven’t seen Last Man On Earth for years. Robinson Crusoe On Mars looks intriguing, I think Criterion released that one. That monster fight at the end of Destroy All Monsters is still one of the coolest things I’ve ever seen. Check out Son Of Godzilla if you want to see more of Kumonga. Surprised 2001 wasn’t on your list although it was waaaaaay to trippy for me to get into

I have the Criterion bluray of Robinson Crusoe on Mars. Well worth the money. I am the of the very FEW dissenters when it comes to 2001:a space Odyssey. The visual effects from 1969 have yet to be equalled and beyond stand up over time. The use of the music is equally effective. But aside from the conflict between the main protagonist and the computer, it is mind numbingly long and tedious. Philosophical hogwash. Arthur C.Clarke and Stanley Kubrick shared a BIG bong before making that movie. But again, it rates at least in top 5 of every critic's list since forever. Watch it while you're very awake.

@@tonysantiago255 That is actually the biggest reason why I have never sought 2001 out. I've heard time and again that it is slow, tedious, and a bit artsy. Artsy films and myself rarely see eye to eye. Though there are a few exceptions. I really like House(Hausu) from Japan.

The Time Machine looks fantastic. I actually added it to my Amazon wish list after we talked about. Oh man you are going to hate me for this one but I’m not the biggest fan of Last Man On Earth. I’m not really going to go into details about that here. Of course you already know I love Destroy All Monsters. It’s a absolute classic. The fact that it has some of the most obscure monsters really makes it a stand out. Much like Destroy All Monsters you already know my feelings about Planet Of The Apes. It’s a overall fantastic series and just like you I like the original series better than the updated versions but at least the updated versions are still good and they didn’t butcher it. Anyway this was another excellent video. I highly enjoyed it. I hope you are having a superawesome weekend good buddy.

The Time is Machine is definitely fun and those Morlocks are just too groovy looking. They almost look like a 60s monster rock band. I'd buy that album. Destroy All Monsters is indeed a classic. Makes me think a bit of the NES game with all the obscure monsters. Too bad Hedorah wasn't in it. That would have been pretty spiffy. I remember we talked about the Planet of the Apes series, but I don't recall which was your favorite. But thanks as always for watching, pal. I will probably be picking up The Time Machine in the near future. I have so many orders placed right now I’m trying to let some of them get in before placing more orders. You are very welcome. @@AtomicSnackBar I saw it - the remake - and didn't care for it since it didn't follow the book, him going back to his own time period. The original will always be my favorite, the second was the one - made for TV - with John Beck, in 1978 I believe. Of the 3 renditions of the book I Am Legend, the one with Vincent Price is the best, Will Smith is the worst, not because of his acting, but because of changing the infected into fast-racing zombies, Charlton's one is good for being a contemporary one, I was just a teenager when it came out so I could relate to it. The original Planet of the Apes is the best of the series, though some have suggested that the title of the movie should have been saved for the closing credits so as not to give away the plot. @@AtomicSnackBar Will Smith is a good actor but there was nothing he could do with that movie. The thing about the Planet of the Apes movies is after the 1st, the continuity breaks down 1. 3972 is the year they landed 2. 3955 for Brents's ship but how did they get there and why? 3. The ship is just a small capsule now without any hibernation chambers or rear thrusters or such - I'd be surprised if there were any seats. I did enjoy watching the movies and the comics that Marvel put and the book is very good - though it only takes 600 years not 2,000 to get to their destination. Any plans for the New Trilogy? That would be a good Binge to watch: The Last Trilogy telling how things happened followed by the ones with Taylor and Roddy MacDowell. Leave out Tim Burton's, it made no sense.
