My pleasure Natalie! I'm glad that my videos help preserve your sanity! I know what you mean, it can be scary when you start to see red losses but remember, when we are buying stocks, we are owning parts of the company. So have faith in the future of the company! Great to see you again, Adrian! Instead of being scared in this market drop, I’m learning to continue to invest while the stock prices are lower. You got it Missy! I have made several videos on what to do during a Market Crash (check the playlist below) 👇 But you're right! The vast majority of people are overly emotional, meaning that they give into fear and they panic when the price drops but the important thing to keep in mind is that NOTHING HAS CHANGED with the company itself! It's still the same company making a profit, so the drop in the share price is just an opportunity to buy MORE shares at a discount! Check out my other videos on what to do during a Market Crash =) kzbin.info/aero/PLj8bU3AuW2qH5PDXX5vLxsF5zPE0sOCji

Awesome, greatly appreciate the time you put into these explanations! May I ask for a clarification on the point you made about the tax treatment for TD and ENB in the margin account? Assuming we are just talking about Canadians purchasing canadian companies, I thought ideally you'd want all dividend paying stocks to be in your TFSA/RRSP since interest income will simply be taxed whereas in TFSA/RRSP they will not be? I know I must have missed something, but may I ask what is the actual benefit of holding TD and ENB in the margin account? Thank you!
@CanadianTShirt
@CanadianTShirt 2 жыл бұрын
Oh no you are totally correct, you absolutely SHOULD invest in your TFSA and RRSP while you still have room! There's no benefit to paying taxes on your investments while you have tax sheltered room waiting for you! But in my position, I am basically maxed out of my TFSA and RRSP (I maxed them out last year for the first time and now am close to maxing them out again for the year) So now that my TFSA is close to maxed out, I have to be extra strategic and prioritize REITs in my TFSA with my limited available room. Once I'm maxed out, I can put Canadian dividends in my Margin account and I won't be taxed too heavily on it but REITs don't get this benefit so try very hard to reserve my TFSA and a big chunk of my RRSP for REITs since I don't want to hold REITs in my Margin account. I talk about this in much greater detail in my MEMBERS-ONLY videos but I wanted to bring it up quickly here. Excellent question and I like where your head is at! 😁

I realized that some stocks have a really good dividend yield but there is little-to-no room to grow. On contrary, some stocks having low-to-medium dividend yield can offer a very high capital gain on a yearly basis, which contribute to a much higher % P/L than high dividend-yield stocks.
@CanadianTShirt

@@CanadianTShirt Hi Adrian, how do you monitor your monthly (or annually) total return with the combination of capital gains and dividend yield? Again, I am a long term investor and these 2 stocks have been my favourite investments for almost 10 years. The main value of this video is explaining the business practice and financial health of these companies, NOT the current share price which fluctuates every minute. Wouldn't call TD a bargain, but probably a good long term hold. Banks are quite tricky to value... Can you really say you are confident in their loan book? RioCan... Think a lot of turmoil to come in all commercial real estate due to work from home. RioCan best of breed but would still be a seller here

Hi Adrian, Great to see you again!!, Thanks for another great and informational video. TD and Rio Can is for sure my next additional stocks in my Portfolio, for sure I will buy them. I have question, you mean I have to use my TFSA account to purchase RIO CAN to avoid taxes is this correct? secondly I have U.S. stocks in my RRSP Account, am I gonna get taxes for my US Stocks, is this good though. I am trying to clean my portfolio, and sell some of my stocks that is under performing, is it good timing to sell some of my stocks and re invest it? thanks man!!! is your RESP Seminar in Questrade a go?
@CanadianTShirt
@CanadianTShirt 2 жыл бұрын
Yes when it comes to REITs, you really should hold them in your tax-sheltered accounts like the TFSA or RRSP since those dividends (distributions) are taxed heavier. And absolutely you should hold US stocks in your RRSP, especially if they pay dividends since the RRSP is the ONLY place where US dividends are 100% tax-sheltered! =)

Ya man! The webinar will be Thursday at 4 pm Eastern time, I hope to see you there! And regarding portfolio cleanup, with the market down right now it hurts to sell stocks at a loss. I would only sell if you truly believe that the companies will not recover. Otherwise, let them recover so you don't lock in a loss =)

For real estate exposure, I’d just go with RS. Why hold just one REIT, when you can hold all of them at an almost 10% div?

Very important! Just because a stock is down, does NOT mean that it's on sale! You have to do research and ensure that the company is still fundamentally on the right track and profitable. You don't want to catch a falling knife =)

1:30 you mention that you only hold REITs in your TFSA to avoid tax, but SmartCentres is in your RRSP. Is there a particular reason why you've done it this way?
@CanadianTShirt
@CanadianTShirt 2 жыл бұрын
I talked about SmartCenters in my Members-Only Portfolio Reveal videos but the simple reason is that my TFSA was maxed out! Since I have already been working for over 10 years, I had considerably more RRSP room available than TFSA room and when I started buying SmartCenters, I knew that I wouldn't have the TFSA room necessary to reach a DRIP so I decided to buy it in my RRSP instead. It really doesn't matter, for Canadian REITs and dividends they are both 100% tax sheltered in either an RRSP or a TFSA
@CanadianTShirt
@CanadianTShirt 2 жыл бұрын
As I talk about in my RRSP Explained videos, I generally prioritize US Dividends in my RRSP since the RRSP is the only place where US dividends are 100% tax free (since US dividends are charged a 15% withholding tax in a TFSA) but I do hold some Canadian stocks and REITs as well in my RRSP including SmartCentres. If I had more TFSA room, I would have bought it in my TFSA instead to keep all my Canadian REITs together but it was just a matter of available room =)

I don't like making predictions about the short term (2-3 months) because NO ONE knows what will happen to the market and frankly I don't care! If the market rallies and goes up, great! I've just earned capital gains. If the market falls further, also great! I jump in and buy more quality stocks at a discount. But I am NOT planning on cashing out and spending this money. The money I put into the stock market is money that I WILL NOT touch or need for at least 5 years, ideally even longer! Investing is done in the LONG RUN and in the long run, I am historically guaranteed to earn a fantastic profit! What happens 3 months from now, I don't know and I don't stress out about it =)

I'd like to see the best 2 ethical dividend stocks, if there is such a thing? Royal and TD are among the worst fossil fuel investors, so I try to avoid them.
@CanadianTShirt
@CanadianTShirt Жыл бұрын
There are many ETFs which specialize in halal or sustainable or "ethical" investments however they don't generally perform as well as regular index fund ETFs. Also, since there's a lot more work behind researching which stocks are "ethical" or meet the specific criteria, these ETFs will have significantly higher management fees so keep that in mind!
@CanadianTShirt
@CanadianTShirt Жыл бұрын
Also remember that when you buy stocks of a company, you aren't "supporting" that company! You aren't giving your money to the company! You are buying those shares from someone else which is just a regular person! Sure if you are a millionaire buying thousands of shares, then yes that will inflate the stock price but for regular Canadians like you and me, we have zero influence on the stock price. Just keep that in mind =)

Hi Adrian. I am in the process of transferring in my portfolio from EJ to Questrade. I have a question regarding buying dividend stocks and Drips. While at EJ they did fractional shares so it was not an issue. Questrade only re-invests whole share. My question being, is it better to keep topping up say TD to get to the DRIP threshold sooner, or better to buy TD one month then stocks in a different sector like BCE to keep the portfolio fairly balanced the next and just take a longer time to get to the DRIP threshold for all sectors? Thanks Adrian and keep the vids coming, learning a lot from you and looking forward to saving all that extra money with Questrade to invest.

Question that doesn’t really relate to your video: US withholding tax is only applied to dividends, correct? Not capital gains? The reason I ask is I would like to buy a US stock through my TFSA just so I can avoid taxes when I withdraw the money once I’m retired - this stock does not give any dividends. Therefore I should not have to worry about the withholding tax right ?
@CanadianTShirt
@CanadianTShirt 2 жыл бұрын
You are correct! The 15% withholding tax only applies to US dividends NOT capital gains! So if you hold a US growth stock like Amazon which doesn't pay dividends, it will be 100% tax-free in a TFSA =)

Hi Adrian, very happy to have your video. I learned many knowledge about the investment and saving in Canada. May I share my question with you on comparison between investing RBC and TD? I found that the Beta (5Y Monthly) of RBC is 0.76, TD's 0.88. They have same 4% appx. dividend yield. Should we pick the lower beta one (RBC)? is that mean RBC is more stable and lower volatility compared to the whole market? Thank you.
@CanadianTShirt
@CanadianTShirt 2 жыл бұрын
You don't have to pick one or the other, I invest in both! The beta is just one factor among dozens to consider when analyzing a stock! At the end of the day, both banks have a bright future, long history of increasing dividends and growing profits so I like both of them. I just prefer TD because of their US expansion strategy and they are more client-focused than RBC which is more corporate focused =)

@CanadianTShirt
@CanadianTShirt 2 жыл бұрын
ZEB is an ETF that just contains the 6 big Canadian banks. Personally I'm not a fan of ZEB because they're charging you a pretty high management fee of 0.28% every single year just to hold 6 stocks.... I can easily buy those 6 stocks individually and avoid that annual fee! The main benefit of an ETF is built-in diversification so I prefer ETFs that contains dozens or hundreds of stocks! For just 6 stocks, buy them yourself =)
