As soon as it was mentioned that we would be hearing more about Tim Conway later on the list, I immediately knew that the elephant story would be #1. If you've never heard the whole thing, please look it up and watch it. It is so worth it.
@andrewdreasler4283 ай бұрын
Yeah, Tim wound the tension up so much with that elephant story, when Vicki made her comment, it was like a bomb going off on stage. Carol Collapses into the armrest, Tim himself gets bowled over, and Harvey (who always struggled to keep his composure around Tim's joked) ... well, he ... just sort of dissolves.
@Jeff981773 ай бұрын

@@Jeff98177 Yes! It was an Archive of American Television interview, and it's wonderful. She was still The New Kid in the cast, and had never dared veer off-script in any way. As @andrewdreasler428 very correctly pointed out, it was an absolute _bombshell_ for the cast, crew, audience... everyone. Vicki Lawrence wound up being the on soul on stage with one iota of composure. I remember seeing the original (highly edited) broadcast. What stayed in my 20-year-old mind was the image of the monkey doing the merengue (my spell check, of course, suggests "meringue") across the conjoined elephants' trunks, and his elephant imitations. His elephant-trumpet imitation gave me a giggle, but the "Fnork" laid me out. It still lays me out. I noticed there was a distinct change in energy among the cast after the edit. I don't remember what came next, really, and I haven't been able to find anything online but the full, unexpurgated version. To add a layer of goofiness to my personal experience, I was watching the show in a dorm TV lounge at Bowling Green State University in Bowling Green, Ohio -- Conway's alma mater. There was a crew who gathered every week, beer and cigarettes in hand (it was 1977 -- we smoked everywhere), to root for Conway. Some of us (not sayin' who) had gone to the nearby on-campus cemetery (not kidding) to smoke something other than tobacco. Oh, yes. The "Fnork" had the whole room in bits. Come to think of it, apart from hockey, it was probably the biggest success BGSU had in 1977. It's also kinda funny to think the substance we smoked on the bench in the cemetery is now fully legal in Ohio, and the only version of The Elephant Story I can find is the unedited version. I feel like a living relic. Well, at least I know how to cruise the interwebs.

The reason Vicky Lawrence was able to fully break the cast was because that was the first time she fully went off script! No one expected her to say what she said, she was always more shy about ad-libbing, so everyone just lost it laughing their asses off!
@IgoZoom13 ай бұрын
Notice that Vicki is the one who seems to maintain her composure despite being the "junior" actor/comedian in the scene. She has said it was agonizing trying to hold it in, but she did so because she revered Burnett so much. But then she decided to really go for it at the end!
@Wolfie7132 ай бұрын
Vicki Lawrence as Mama was simply amazing. Able to deliver outrageous lines without cracking so she came off as completely serious while dealing with a ludicrous situation. That takes some major talent. Too bad she and Ed O'Neil didn't star in a sitcom together. Imagine Mama and Al Bundy roasting each other with hilarious one-liners and without cracking. Both putting a lot of hateful energy into it making it even better.
@IgoZoom12 ай бұрын
@@Wolfie713 That would be the perfect comedic pairing, no doubt! Although he and Katey Sagal were pretty EPIC!
@Wolfie7132 ай бұрын
@@IgoZoom1 They were good, but this would be on another level. Think of Al Bundy during the scene with the one who said that all the exercise she just did must have expanded her foot. Al says (smirking) "I see you fell on your butt a time or two." She gets up and is like, "How DARE you say that to my face!?" and Al quips back, "I'd say it behind your back but my tanks only got a half a tank of gas!" When he's saying that, you see this serious/angry look on his face. One example of his saying something hilarious while looking so serious that it's almost like he is actually living that life to be so immune to the humor of it. Now think about the times that Mama says something all mad/serious like, but what she says is just too funny to not laugh at. I remember one scene from her show (Mama's Family) where they were reading the personals (dating) in the paper, with all sorts of abbreviations being used, and after someone read one out loud, Mama (all serious) said something, "What in the h-e-double-L" are they saying or whatever. So Mama against Al... Not necessarily as rivals, but just bantering with/against each other... that would have been epic. Like in the Al scene I mentioned, after Al made his "half a tank of gas" comment, I can easily imagine her (Mama) piping in something about the woman not being worth the gas anyway, as a snide "to myself but loud enough for others to hear me" remark.

My favorite: the blooper from Will & Grace with Debra Messing and Jennifer Elise Cox in The Hospital Show (S2E17). The young nurse's aide wearing braces says mushily "Oh, I don't drive, I kept taking the test over and over again, but I'm all like 'this is hard!'" Messing dies every take.

The thing I like about John Ritter is, even when he was in "grown up" comedies like Bad Santa, his comedy was never mean. It was never hurtful. It was always pleasant, even if you were the one being made fun of. He knew the power of words, and the consequence of intent. I think that's why we are still such fans of his, he was always sincere and compassionate.
