UB40's entire catalog is an endless stream of poorly executed soulless covers, vastly inferior to the originals, and not at all helped by the whiney voice of lead singer Matt Doyle. Yes! And while stylistically, the two versions are similar (i.e. southern soul music) Aretha totally transforms, and owns, the song. (no small feat considering how great Otis's original is). So many on this list are covers whose arrangement and performance are radically different from the original -- Aretha managed to transform and heighten the original song with much more subtle arrangement differences which is arguably an even greater accomplishment

"You Keep Me Hangin' On" by Vanilla Fudge - #6 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1967 - Slow, heavy rock - the album version is best, from their debut album.. This cover version also went to #18 in the UK. Between the release of their 3rd and 4th albums, the single re-charted in 1968, again going to #6. This gives Vanilla Fudge quite a distinction for a list such as this.

It is probably my favorite Nirvana cover, though seeing Tori Amos playing her version of Smells Like Teen Spirit live was goose bump inducing. I have always liked Faith No More's version of War Pigs over the Black Sabbath original - more angry punch to the vocals. The late Jeff Buckley's cover of Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah is my favorite of the many covers of this song, though I will always love Cohen's emotion. Hearing a new arrangement of a song you love lets you listen with fresh ears and sometimes appreciate the song more. #17, "You Keep Me Hangin' On". Not even a mention of "already covered in a different way by Vanilla Fudge in 1968." The Vanilla Fudge version was originally recorded and released just months after the Supremes' version (in the summer of 1967) but it wouldn't hit the Top 10 in the US until the summer of 1968. As was noted in interviews, the group listened to the song's lyrics and noticed how really dark they were and so they slowed down the tempo (which they did frequently) and put a more aggressive edge to the song. The sound they had on the song was one of the many precursors of heavy metal. (Listen to the Fudge's version of the song, then compare it to Hendrix's "Purple Haze" or Led Zeppelin's "Whole Lotta Love" or Iron Butterfly's "In-a-Gadda-Da-Vida.")

Although I really like Disturbed's version of "Sounds of Silence", I think the Pentatonix version is even stronger. Although Whitney vs. Dolly probably stirs the most controversy 🙂

For a part 2: Tiny Tim's cover of Highway To Hell, Steam Powered Giraffe's cover of Cellophane, Voltaire's cover of Love Song, The Cog Is Dead's cover of Bad Guy, Erin McKeown's cover of Paper Moon.

point to you in the Bad guy almost Weird Al reimagining.. but i'll still take Conquer Divide's.. and their version of Sheeran's Bad Habits might be better than Sheeran's

Wow, I just complained about the lack of chapter breaks in your videos not 10 minutes ago! Thanks for responding so quickly.

I'm on a mission to find some of these. Thunderstruck by Robyn Anderson (Master of Puppets...frankly a lot of songs by her), Sally's Song by Fiona Apple, Mad World by Puddles Pity Party, Dream On by Morgan James, and I'll end with a good one; Black Hole Sun by Haley Reinhart

Why was there a fleeting clip of Tom Jones singing in the bit about the Joni Mitchell vs CSNY version of Woodstock?
