Haast's eagle (Hieraaetus moorei) was the largest bird of prey that live in the south island of New Zealand. 🦅 With a wingspan of between two and three meters, and weighing up to 13 kilograms, it was larger than the American Bald eagle and had talons as large as tigers; perfect for hunting and feasting on the moa, another large native bird of New Zealand, til its extinction 600 years ago by Maori settlers. Fun (noso-fun) fact: Māori legend say that the poukai (it name in Māori) would often swoop down and take children from their families.
