Thank you so much for not treating the GBA like an SNES machine. The handheld format really had so many amazing games unique to it that when I see a list mostly devoted to ports, I feel disappointed. Also, everyone, play Mother 3.

The ports were a huge part of the GBA, but I completely agree that putting them on the list isn't really a good representation of all the other greatness of the console. They were super important though, which is why they get a nifty little montage.

That's how I feel anyways, and especially since I don't usually play on original hardware so I can just as easily play the original version.

Absolutely awesome video, really well made! Great decision to put the ports to one side and highlight original titles (while also acknowledging the great ports). My two favourites for the system are your number 1 and a title that didn't even make the honorable mentions: Rhythm Tengoku. That game oozes so much charm and creativity (more than the subsequent games in my opinion). Wario Ware is spiritually similar and also brilliant though.

I haven't played some of these but your love for all of them, as well as the honourable mentions list and the acknowledgement of the huge library of ports tells me you're someone who deeply cares for the GBA. Even the games I never considered playing feel like fantastic choices for this reason. And yes. I fully agree with the FireRed and LeafGreen remark. They ARE the Gold standard for remakes.

Great list! Love the GBA as well. I'd add Mario Tennis Power Tour, which along with its prequel for the GBC, is the best Mario Tennis game with actually a fun story and RPG elements, and not just multiplayer matches like all the tennis games to date even on Switch. I hope they some day bring the RPG Mario Tennis back :)

Honestly glad to see Drill Dozer in the top 10 spot! Whenever discussions about good GBA games are abound, hardly many games like Drill Dozer or much of anything from 2005 get mentioned, as everyone just migrated to the DS or PSP in terms of handheld systems.

Good list. I was unaware of the TMNT game, so I'll definitely try it out. It was definitely a good choice to exclude the many SNES ports from the main list, but still talk a little about the best ones. One port that I'd like to mention is River City Ransom EX. It's a remake of "Downtown Nekketsu Monogatari" for the Famicom, or "River City Ransom" in the US and "Street Gangs" in PAL regions. The original is still a great game, and really ahead of its time with the mix of beat em' up and RPG mechanics, as well as its use of environmental objects in combat, but I think I like the GBA remake a little more for its faster paced combos and improved animations. I also love that you can restrain enemies by throwing trash cans over them.

@@staxstix nah F Zero maximum velocity was a difficult game but as a kid I got the controls down and it was my favorite f zero next to the snes classic at the time. I still play the GC f zero which is also difficult.

@@staxstix The GBA Fzero games control nothing like the SNES version. Took me a few races to figure out how to do sharp turns without crashing into walls. SNES cars are much easier to control.

Me and my brother grew up in the early 2000’s each with a gba and sp. Those days before smart phones and just focused on our games trying to help each other beat bosses or pass levels are still my favorite childhood memories. GBA was special and I wish I could relive those days again.

This brought my whole childhood back. I must've played the pokemon games several times. Metroid Fusion was phenomenal. But Mario and Luigi Superstar Saga really was insanely good. I haven't played many Mario games but it will always be my personal favorite. Something about the storytelling, humor, and gameplay just hit so right.

Another for the Honorable Mention catagory: Astro Boy: The Omega Factor. There were a lot of great games on the GBA but here's one that's not likely to be re-released and will likely to be forgotten. Love letter to the classic anime with great production and story beats. Blast to play, too.

The Final Fantasy ports are all great and have bonus content not present in the pixel remasters, if you don't mind the slight downgrade in music quality from the SNES originals Advance Wars 1 & 2 still hold up, I actually prefer the pixel art to the Switch 3D graphics. The DS games Dual Strike and Days of Ruin are standalone sequels, with the former being a traditional AW game and the latter a darker more story driven game with new characters set in a post apocalypse

I personally found AW: Dual Strike went a little ham with extra mechanics and missed the simplicity of the first two, but it has some cool extra modes, and a lot of (if not all) the maps from the first game, it also has a map editor. I just preferred the story campaign from the first two

I appreciate your work here and you have gained a new subscriber, the only thing that I can point out is the classic justin bailey code on Metroid allows you to play as samus without her suit but that was a password so I would say that it doesnt really count

As fantastic as the GBA and its catalog were, I remember buying the original model at launch along with Castlevania Circle of the Moon, the follow up to one of my favorite games of all time, and while I would revisit and finish the game when they finally released the backlit model, it was almost impossible to play without sitting directly under a light source, which was definitely a bummer

You should play Megaman Battle Network series (preferably 3). It has unique gameplay, great story, etc. It's also ahead of it's time and has a lot of potential if they decided to give it a chance.

Golden Sun and the Metroid games were some of my favorites on the GBA. Castlevania games were great too...... hence the "metroidvania" style that I enjoy. I still think about games like Golden Sun and its sequel sometimes, and rank it as one of the best rpgs to come out, esp rpgs with pixel graphics. And even tho I love Zelda, somehow I missed out on playing Minish Cap for the gba.... might have to get a rom and check it out for fun. Nice list tho, good variety of games.

In my humble opinion the snes ports are worth it. There are some that add content to the original like Super Mario Bros. 3 (you should download the virtual console rom since it is the one that have all the e-readers levels) or Yoshi's Island. And then Donkey Kong Country 3 just has a different soundtrack

My reason for going the PI Emu route is because the Japan exclusive titles that the BIG N won't share with the rest of the world. So some of us (myself included) are taking back gaming by going to play with a slice of Raspberry PI and giving the BIG N our favorite finger. 😉😂

Superstar saga and fire red was my 2 childhood games on here, but some of my personal favorites are missing like: Final Fight Donkey Kong Country 3 Spongebob Movie Game Robots Yoshi's Island Sonic Advance Super Monkey Ball Jr Doom Madagascar: Operation Penguin Monsters Inc Dogz Been a gamer my whole life, and this may be my favorite era of gaming, when the advancement of games was blowing everyone's mind, it's not like that anymore.

Although I’m sad I no longer have my OG SNES(though I do have Classic edition) I tend to overlook my good ol GBA collection which is probably the next best thing! The other night I was watching the movie Ivanhoe and it made me wanna go back to Defender of the Crown.. One of my favorites on Amiga at one time.. Overall I’d have to say the Fire Emblem duology is probably my most preferred on the system
