So many I haven't seen from 1940.I have only seen 3 Arizona the return of Frank James and Santa fe trail definitely an improvement from the 30s just in this year alone.

I've seen exactly half, 10 out of 20. The best western here of course is the Marx Bros Go West... I'm kidding! I'm a fan of the Marx Bros and that wasn't top tier but still fun. I think Abbott & Costello has a western flavored comedy coming up in 41 or 42.

Dark Command was Wayne's first 'A' Picture for Republic."A' being a film where the studio receives a percentage of ticket sales. 1939's Stagecoach put some Westerns in the status of a major genre with more 'A' westerns. C.B.Demille's films were more considered Historical Epics.

I have seen 8 top 1940 westerns. Favourites are The Mark of Zorro, My Little Chickadee, The Return of Frank James, Northwest Mounted Police, Virginia City, Northwest Passage and Arizona. I have also seen The Westerner. Favourite posters and stills are from The Mark of Zorro, My Little Chickadee, The Return of Frank James, Northwest Mounted Police, Santa Fe Trail (surprised I still have not seen this one) and Arizona.

Hi Flora, welcome to the 1940s, one of your favorite movie eras, and mine too. Your tally 8 out of 20, I've seen 10. My favorites are - Virginia City, Santa Fe Trail, Return of Frank James, Go West, The Westerner and Mark of Zorro. Gotta love a year when Mae West, W. C. Fields, and the Marx Brothers all go west. And Melody Ranch too, the quintessential Gene Autry film.

Two films from this list were selected for preservation from the National Film Registry - The Mark of Zorro and Melody Ranch. I'm not sure I've seen any Gene Autry westerns, or Roy Rogers come to think of it, unless he was paired with Bob Hope or John Wayne.

@@Top10Charts3978 If you were a kid in late 1950s Starkville MS, you could have spent 25 cents for the Saturday matinee at the picture show and seen them all. Johnny Mack Brown and Lash Larue too. No Hopalong Cassidy though.
