I know it's cool to hate Hamilton now, but I think "My Shot" belonged on here. It's pulling triple duty by establishing the status quo of pre-Revolutionary America, bringing the band together of Hamilton and his allies, AND establishing his desire to make his mark on history and repel the British. One of the show's best songs too.

Another thing i like about "just can't wait to be king" is how it mirror's scar's later villain song. Simba sings about how he wants to be king cause then he'll be the most important person and nobody will tell him no, and what does scar sing about? "I'll be king undisputed, respected, saluted and seen for the wonder i am". zazu's "if this is where the monarchy is headed county out", is foreshadowing scar's disastrous reign as king, because he is essentially a version of simba who never grew up.

Waiting On a Miracle is amazing. It transitions so smoothly into the song (when she’s emotionally isolated) and it’s truly meant specifically so Mirabel can spill out all her emotions, not just explain her motivations. She thinks what she wanted was a gift- that she would “move the mountains, heal what’s broken” etc., and she does do these things, but not in the way she expected. And the line “open your eyes” is what abuela says when someone gets their gift, but she says it like “realize how you’re treating me”. Love it

I like how “can’t wait to be king” also shows the expectations vs reality of being king. It pairs well with the tonal shift before Mufasa’s death and contrasts with Simba’s fear and hesitance to return to the pride later in the movie-showing how much his fathers death changed him and once more emphasizing the different tones from the bright and optimistic Simba at the beginning vs the duller (most adult simba scenes are at night or in shadows) and pessimistic adult simba

My favorite “I Want” song comes from what I believe to be the most underrated (and best) animated musical of all time: The Prince of Egypt. “All I Ever Wanted” is a brilliant subversion of the “I Want” song trope. Moses has just learned he’s a Hebrew, and that everything he knew about himself was a lie. But as he runs away from the Hebrew slums and back to the palace where he grew up, he sings a song which is not genuinely an expression of what he wants-rather, it’s him trying to convince himself that he belongs there. That the luxuries of a prince of Egypt are all he ever wanted. Of course, the lie eventually gives way to the truth, which is expressed so tragically in his dream. The reprisal of this song which happens during “The Plagues” is so brilliant too. I freaking love The Prince of Egypt so much.

10:24 I recently learned that Reflection actually was originally going to be like a minute or so longer. There are even a few storyboards floating around of what the lost portion of the song would have looked like. Apparently, some executives wanted to cut Reflection from the film entirely, concerned it wouldn't hold audience's attention and mess with the film's pacing (sound familiar?) However, the composers/songwriters for the film Matthew Wilder and David Zippel opposed this because of how important the song is to Mulan's character. So, they compromised with the studio higher ups and just cut the song a bit. I've seen some footage of what the full song would have looked like in a video of all the different Disney princess actresses singing their most iconic songs from their respective films and frankly I wish the full song made it the final product but eh, nothing we can do about it now.

Fun fact, there’s actually 2 endings to the 80s little shop of horrors movie. One where Audrey dies and the plants take over the world, and one where Audrey lives and everything is okay. Both versions have been released so basically anytime I go back and watch it I have no idea what ending I’m gonna get

I honestly never thought much of I Want songs. I only understood their perpose, but most the times, the songs don't really move me, so I just thought this video would be a fun watch. Nothing more. Nothing less. But when we got to the top 8, I remembered how these songs made me sob and cry whenever I listened to them. How I always truly hoped for the character's happiness, and how it inspired me to want some for my own. I can't believe how I had forgotten so easily. Truly, I Want songs are an art that I need to focus on more. Thanks for the reminder. :)

Former Steward here, Into The Woods is such a gorgeous musical that has my whole heart. The musical and lyrical callbacks are so deeply interwoven with the meaning of the melodies and phrases changing depending on who is singing it. I Wish is a gorgeous song, but the bangers in this show go hard. Your Fault/Last Midnight show the tangled spaghetti mess the story fell into in the Narrators absence, while allowing the Witch to go off about how she was cursed with being right, surrounded by ‘nice’ people who lack the conviction to do what she would, then the dual powerhouses of No One Is Alone and Act Two Finale role around to send the audience with gorgeous melodies with such heartfelt harmonies from the whole cast. Li’l side note, in our production, the Narrator was revealed to be the Baker’s son and they reunite at the end with a hug.

I don't even know if this one counts but one of my favorite songs from a musical ever is "I Dreamed a Dream" (specifically Ruthie Henshall's version!) from Les Miserables. It's like an "I Want" song if that want was obliterated, crushed, burned, stomped on, and nae naed before your eyes. The music is beautiful and you can really feel her pain and longing despite knowing that the dream she dreamed of will never exist no matter what or how much she wishes for it. It's such a beautiful piece about everything she dreamed of, everything she hoped for, and how that dream and want has been reduced to mere nothingness. The part that always gets me is specifically, "But he was gone when Autumn came- and, still, I dream he'll come to me, that we will live the years together". The LAST line is truly beautiful as she admits that "Life has killed the dream I dreamed". Her want will never be fulfilled and she will forevermore be left with that emptiness and longing in her shattered soul. JUST LISTEN TO IT PLEASE IT'S SO BSHSHAKHSKA

Les Mis has so many of those “crushed” “I want songs”. Who am I?, stars, I dreamed a dream, on my own, even bring him home. It captures that feeling of longing and hope so well and that’s why Les Mis is my favorite.

My favorite I Want Song comes from "25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee" (there are debatably 4 I Want songs in that musical but I only want to talk about one) It's time to talk about the Art that is "The I Love You Song." The dreamy chords and vocals at the start are phenomenal and give it plenty of room to build and believe me it DOES. It hits every high and goes beyond that especially in the emotions department. Even the idea of the song is so emotional and sad. A neglected child whose only want is to be loved by her parents HITS. Everything about the vocals hits so hard and the quiet finish just begs you to think about the song. It's an odd I Want song since it's pretty deep into Act 2, but it's such a huge character explanation/shift for Olive that it's definitely my top I Want song (also unrelated but a Somewhere That's Green I Want song section that doesn't mention Salt Lake City (Book of Mormon) smh /lh)
