Sonic and All Stars Racing Transformed (VITA). Full fat console racing experience with minimal gameplay changes (10 racers VS 8 racers). There were significant cutbacks to the level geometry and art, and many of the post effects were removed completely, but the game ran at the Vita's full resolution and all the physics and world events are exactly the same.

@@Cawidotron Technically, All Stars Racing DS is a conversion built from the ground up to take advantage of the hardware, which went a long way to maintaining a higher framerate than Transformed 3DS; that version of the sequel is a more literal port job, quicker, cheaper, and not exactly optimized for the hardware.

Resident evil 2 for the Nintendo 64 will always be my favourite example of an impossible port. You have 2 cds worth of content on a single cartridge and all cg cutscenes and spoken dialogue in tact. Not only that but it has unique content such as the randomiser and outfits. Most N64 ports always compromised cutscenes with slideshows and no voices. Truly a masterpiece.

Came to post this. There were other PS1 games that got ported to N64 like Gex, Spider-Man, and Nightmare Creatures and typically the FMV cutscenes would be replaced with still slideshow images. I had to do a double take when I rented the game back in the day and booted it up to find FMV playing from a cartridge- it was unprecedented.

Dragons Lair on Game Boy Color! No, it's not a reformulated game, It's a direct port of the arcade game! Yes, Digital Eclipse took an FMV laserdisc game and somehow managed to cram it onto a portable handheld that could barely handle a few seconds of FMV, much less an entire game built around it! My favorite trick that Doom 3 on Xbox pulled was to default every texture to pure black until it was loaded in. That way if the cache was running behind, you might not notice it was missing due to how dark most of the game was. Also kudos to the developers unifying the entire render pipeline into a single pass. I immediately didn't notice the difference but that would have been a huge performance saving on the system.

Dying Light on Switch is one of the best conversions ever made. The open-world game utilizes PS4/XONE and runs at 30FPS on older systems, so I expected some severe cutbacks. However, unlike Witcher 3/Doom/Wolf before, the port is almost identical visually (especially in a handheld mode where it's impossible to spot the difference) and rarely drops below the 30FPS line (in a way, the framerate there is smoother compared to senior versions). Randy Linden is an absolute wellspring of "impossible" ports. You featured SNES Doom from his back catalog, but you also could've had: - Quake on GBA...yes, this was a thing, MVG did a video - Dragons Lair on Amiga...the full Laserdisc game crammed onto about 10 floppies 😂 ...and he wrote the Bleem! PSX emulator..what a guy! Other "impossible" ports I've encountered in my time: - Elite on NES...3D wireframe on a tile-based system with no bitmap display - Art of Fighting & Fatal Fury Special on PC Engine CD...even has the Neo Geo scaling and giant sprites - Virtua Fighter on 32X...better than the Saturn version! - Street Fighter Zero 3 on Saturn...its better than the Dreamcast version released a year earlier - Sega Rally on Saturn...even better than the VF2 conversion

World of Final Fantasy for the Vita. The blur and some effects were missing, along with the story DLC, but the game ran just fine. A great game in the palm of your hands if you don't own a Switch.

I find the second half of the 2010s weird. PS vita failed especially in west, but somehow square enix released world of final fantasy, and dragon quest builders for ps vita in west. Meanwhile 3DS was very successful in west, but dragon quest 11 for 3DS? Same goes for capcom. They of course released the vita version for resident evil revelation 2, meanwhile the 3DS version of great ace attorney/monster hunter generations ultimate japanese only.

VITA seems to be a very under utilised system. I have only just picked one up in 2024 and have to say I can’t understand why this failed. The tech isn’t a million miles behind the Switch all those years prior, it seems it just didn’t have the software

Basically every Wii U port was a miracle lol. Ok, maybe I'm mostly exaggerating, but damn, the Wii U's CPU basically hindered most ports to the system (1.4GHz vs 3.5GHz of the Xbox 360 and PS3), and the ones that ran the same (if not better) than the other console versions can kind of qualify as impossible ports to me at least.

True, although my understanding is that the Wii U was more powerful in other respects like RAM, GPU. It’s certainly an interesting point. The 360/PS3 and Wii/Wii U were really the last generation to have these huge architectural differences
@Jabjabs
@Jabjabs 9 күн бұрын
@@thegamelounge659 About the only component of the Wii U that was better was the GPU, it would be roughly about twice the performance of the 360/Ps3. Yes it had more RAM (1GB available for games) but it was much more limited in terms of bandwidth compared with the 360/Ps3. The embedded 32MB of EDRAM which took a lot of load of the limited RAM bandwidth but it could only go so far. As soon as you had to get the data back to and from the main data pool performance dived. That is not to say it was a bad system but it did pay to have the GPU work as hard as possible on the current buffer in the EDRAM than it was to try and shuffle stuff around. I mean even Nintendo eventually gave up on the clean implementations of this towards the end with BotW having a large amount of render targets. But it still worked out ok. Also one minor note for OP. I love that even with the comparison you made, the WiiU CPu ran at 1.243Ghz. So even slower than you said. ;) Don't consider it a bad CPU just consider it as the best PPC 750/G3 processor ever built, heck they even made it do multicore - something it was never designed for. And that massive cache was wonderful!

Pac-Man 8kb and Star Castle (Atari 2600.) These homebrew were literally considered impossible during the system's lifetime. The system that made and destroyed Atari's reputation was originally designed to play Pong and Combat and nothing else. R-Type and Chase HQ (ZX Spectrum. ) This budget computer has no graphics hardware at all. Also, you can only get 2 colors per 8x8 square, so how is R-Type in full color? Race Drivin' (Gameboy) The most playable home version of this 3D simulation racer, by far. Starblade (3DO) Not polygons. Tomb Raider (GBA) Speaks for itself.

@@thegamelounge659Judging from comments by the developer, we won't see the full thing until he can squeeze it into a 32MB cart. (The largest official ROM size for released games.) Guess that shouldn't count, so I'll replace it with Out Of This World/Another World on SNES. It's not even running the CPU at full speed, and the solutions are creative, to say the least.

You are correct. For capture I use emulation with PGXP texture warping correction and the images are upscaled. So the footage is significantly better. The games still look great on original hardware though. Especially through a CRT.
@litjellyfish
@litjellyfish 8 күн бұрын
@ yes I would much have preferred like emulated as original resolution with a crt shader to get as close as the real experience as possible. I am surprised so many emulate and record with 4k - special fx etc. for me the charm is to see the game as they looked back in the 90s :) so the crt look as you mentioned is what I personally would love to see more

I hear you, I tend to switch between the 2 to be honest. Especially with consoles like the N64 the original image upscaled can look odd. The games were designed for CRT so there is a certain charm there.

@thegamelounge659

True, but also to understand more about the process. Did the projects get commissioned and funded and then they have to do their best knowing the final product could not work properly or do they test the tech first. Something like Quake on Saturn they had already created the SLavedriver engine so potentially knew something would be possible.

Even though it was cancelled, Half Life for Dreamcast is still one of the most "impossible" ports I've ever seen There's a few major issues (controller layout and load times mainly) but it's shockingly impressive that Valve and Gearbox got it running as well as they did They even made an extra campaign specifically for Dreamcast, Blue Shift, which would later be released on PC

I've never considered Quake 2 on PS1 to be an "impossible port" ... largely because it's just a version of Q2 running off the original Quake's engine.

@@thegamelounge659 Just double checked myself and I was mistaken... it isn't running off the Q1 engine. It's running off of an in house engine. But yeah... it's more of a good console "version" of the game to me. Somewhat gimped by the sacrifices that had to be made due to memory limitations. But that's not the game's fault. The horrible controls aren't the game's fault either since dual analog controls weren't really solidified at the time. For me, with its numerous faults it's the best console version of the game up until the 360 version.

Dynamic colored lighting in Quake 2 was implemented in PS1 port while on PC it required a mandatory graphics card. Like Voodoo 1. PS1 was miles behind minimal requirements of PC version. PS1 was a 33MHz machine with 2MB of VRAM. It ran 4 players split screen at 30fps (check Digital Foundry Retro on Q2 ports). It also run at somewhat higher resolution than usual 320x200. So Quake2 on PS1 is really a big achievement. Too bad they didn't release Q1 on PS1 after that.

@DavidMiller-kv4we 5 күн бұрын
@@Sly2Cooper Oh, there's no argument that back then consoles were significantly ahead of PCs as far as graphical capability. I both fortunately and unfortunately lived through it. haha The dynamic lighting was baked into the PS1's capabilities... and it looked DAMN good for the time. The PS1 couldn't run the game at 30fps 4 player... but that's not really important since even most computers couldn't even run the game right. The PS1 (as far as the CPU goes compared to even low end PCs of the time) HAD to have a custom version of the engine to even be playable. And even then it was severely compromised. Damned impressive for the time? Hell yes. An "impossible port"? It's not even a port. It's a "version" of the game. A DAMN good version, but a version.
