I mean, it was the best thing they could have done. If someone had freaked, the cat would have either also gotten nervous and lashed out, or his hunting instinct could have been activated, leading to an attack. It's why they were saying climb out, don't jump; jumping is a quick, run-away motion and could have triggered his hunting instinct. He just looked curious, he didn't seem like he was being aggressive. The best thing to do when confronted by a large cat is to stay calm. Only fight if they attack first, and NEVER run away.

You are seeing the .0000001% of interactions where something crazy happens. I've been on a couple of safaris and for the most part the animals completely ignore the vehicles or just see them as part of the landscape. Saw a male lion walk right next to a Land Rover so it could lay down in its shade. Elephants can be a bit touchy, I was doing a self drive in Kruger and a herd was crossing the road in front of us. One turned toward the car, flapped his ears, and took a couple of steps toward us. I just put it in reverse and gave him some space, problem solved.

Those were white lions. They normally take them out of the wild as they would not survive, they can't hide in the grass to hunt.. I think that was a lion park near Pretoria if I'm right. They have a pride of white lions that are captive bred and socialised as cubs. Still dangerous animals but not wild.
