Worst part for me was Matthew's death. That was a shock to say the least. Best part was watching Carson and Mrs Hughes walk hand in hand into the sea. It not only showed their abiding friendship but you knew it just might lead to something else (which of course it did). Second best are every interaction between Violet and Isobel. Those two were hilarious together, although Violet usually had the best lines. It was also heartwarming when Violet admitted she didn't want Isobel to marry because she might lose her as a companion.

@danmc78152 жыл бұрын
Not sure I share your enthusiasm, but if there is one character that I would want on my side in this series, John Bates is it. The man is always decent and almost always looks for the good in others. The only that that ever really brings him down is after Anna was raped and she is being very distant (understandably). He is as loyal as can be, and resourceful. And, he is dangerous. I honestly have never really believed he did not off Mr. Green, and I would have never voted to convict if he did. The second and third characters I would want to be near are Anna and Mrs. Hughes, who are both nice, decent and solid. Not sure who is fourth, probably Sybil or Tom.

Matthew’s death is one of the saddest moments on the show. Other than Sybil’s death it IS the saddest moment on the show. But unlike Sybil’s death I wasn’t instantly heartbroken and crushed. I was SO angry!! 😭😭 I had tears of anger streaming down my face! After all of the crazy ups and downs of his and Mary’s relationship they finally seem to have peace and happiness….and then it’s all taken away from them in one awful quick moment. I also hadn’t recovered from Sybil’s death yet when I watched that episode so I wasn’t emotionally stable anyway. That just made it ten times worse

Unfortunately for me the most memorable moment on the show is Sybil’s death 😭😭 She was my absolute favorite character. She was so good and kind. She was beautiful and loving. She deserved the world. She had (in my opinion) the best relationship on the show with her darling husband Tom. Watching Tom and everyone else but mainly Tom sob and beg her to not leave him broke me. Her death made me cry the most out of any moment (sad or happy) from the entire show. When she died I didn’t watch the show again for a few days just because I couldn’t bare the thought of going on without her. Thankfully I’m rewatching the show for the third time right now and Sybil and Tom’s relationship is just barely starting so I have a way to go till then. But the way that her death just seemed to consume everyone in the house….Thomas broke down in tears, all of the servants were heartbroken and sad, Mary and Edythe were NICE TO EACH OTHER, Robert and Cora’s strong, seemingly unbreakable marriage started falling apart, LADY GRANTHAM STARTED CRYING…..Tom lost his loving, supportive, kind wife and never got the chance to raise their daughter together….I just….Her death might be the saddest death I have ever seen in any TV show ever…I just….I always have to take a couple of days before watching the show again after she dies just because it feels so empty and different without her….

Correction. At 10:26 ... typically American misunderstanding, I suppose, but it shows that you have not been paying attention, and have missed one of he significant motivations of the entire series. . "If the baby is a boy he will inherit his father's property and fortune, preserving tradition." . . . . . This is NOT what it's about. As you OUGHT to be aware, the "fortune" of the Crawley Family is so depleted that the roof of Downton Abbey leaks like a sieve. So what is it about? What does Robert's heir inherit? Robert is the Earl of Grantham. The estate on which they live is "Downton Abbey" This indicates that the land was seized by Henry VIII from a monastery in about 1543. You are not expected to know all these details but. this indicates that Robert's Crawley ancestor was already an Earl, and awarded this land more than 450 years before the story begins. (Lord Sinderby makes it clear that Robert holds an ancient title.) The most important thing that Robert passes to his Heir is his title- Earl of Grantham. Matthew Crawley is heir to that title, and at the point of his death, the heir becomes his newborn son George. People who hold these titles are the Nobility. "Aristocracy" is a wider category that includes the extended families of the Nobility. There are levels of Nobility, an a strict pecking order. Every one knows their place in the hierarchy. There are the Royal Dukes. At the time of Downton Abbey they were the Dukes of Cornwall (later Duke of Windsor), York, Gloucester and Kent. Th hereditary Dukes Marquises (Edith's Bertie is a Marquis) Earls (Robert is Earl of Grantham and Shrimpy is Earl of Flintshire) Viscounts Barons (Sinderby is a Baron) The role of these people was traditionally as advisor to the King. With the establishment of an elected Parliament, the Nobility formed an unelected Upper House, like the Senate, called the House of Lords. Every one of these Lords had a seat in Parliament, and can chose whether or not to attend and vote on issues that concern them. The Lord, on inheriting his title, swears an Oath of Allegiance to the Monarch. They are obliged to serve, and to entertain the Monarch when he/she is travelling, as Grantham is called to do Note that the King calls him "Grantham". A tiny number of the ancient titles of Earl have NOT been gender specific, so occasionally down the centuries a woman has been able to inherit to Earldom. More on the House of Lords In the 1990s, a Bill went through the House of Commons (the elected representatives) to upgrade the House of Lords and remove the automatic hereditary privilege. The Bill then had to be passed by the House of Lords. I will never forget that day. Hundreds of Old Nobles who rarely cam to a sitting, dragged out heir moth-eaten old robes, and came to vote. They were effectively voting themselves out of power. Th way the new system works is that 83 of the Hereditary Peers (Nobles) are voted in by the other Nobles. Then there are the High Court Judges, and the Bishops And all the other members of the House of Lords are what are called Life Peers. They are Barons and Dames for the remainder of their life, having received that award, from the Queen on recommendation of Parliament. The "Life Peers" come from all walks of life, but they all have just one thing in common - they have already served their country with such distinction that they have been awarded a peerage. They are academics, doctors, scientists, writers, social workers, activists, entertainers, sportspeople, public servants, etc etc. They are not elected into their Seat in the House of Lords; they are awarded it. Because of the terms of receiving a Life Peerage, there is a great diversity, with people of minority groups of all sorts well represented.

Nobody could have carried out the role of the Dowager Countess like Dame Maggie Smith with such finesse and aplomb ... well I just cannot ! ONE never knows what will emerge in any situation. Which says the writers have perfectly captured an accurate reflection of a woman of her class, experience, and familial position alive at that time. Being a few years my senior Maggie Smith had ample opportunity to encounter such women. Further, it is a fine example of an accomplished observer of people which is why she is an artiste of the highest quality and calibre. Why hasn't anyone written a vehicle which would demonstrate just what the finest women actors of this period are able to give to the World. Smith, Streep, Blanchett, but to name three ... Even something viable enough to entice McLean from her conversation with the Universe. Sarandon, Sally Field. Surely there exists a suitable script.

God, I love this series! I wish I could physically sit through a cinema screening of the second movie, but I will have to wait for the DVD! Funny, but I discovered it by accident when I was shopping at Target, and happened to come across the DVDs of the first season. Had never heard of it, but thought I'd give it a chance, and loved it - watched the whole thing in one night! (Always been an Anglophile and period drama fan!) Thought my owner/boss might like it, so I leant it to her, and she did the same, asking me for the second series! I had to explain to her that it was still airing and wasn't on DVD yet! I'd like to see it last past the second series, but the character of the Dowager is mostly likely well past natural age, and it's rumored that she dies in this second movie. I can't imagine the stories without her, and unless they bring back Shirley McClain, I can't imagine it without her.

Well…..I just went on an extreme emotional rollercoaster watching all of the happy, fun, beautiful moments and all of the heartbreaking, terrible and saddest moments all at once….But I enjoyed it nonetheless

I always liked the Dowager Countess. The Dowager Countess always had a quick wit, and a great one liner.

I always liked Sir Anthony Strallen, such a nice man. Totally understand why Edith was so taken by him.

Love Downton Abbey. Hate the annoying cloying Ms Mojo narration which intrudes on everything I love about Downton Abbey.
