I played bass (upright) in high school. After high school I took up bass guitar but never played it seriously. Now in my 81st year I have taken it up as it is easy to practice backing up songs I like. I like the way Mark presents chords and syncopation. He is a great teacher!

I'm listening to the lesson a little more. Mark also does a great job in explaining what plucking hand/fret hand have to do to get the desired sound (making the sound of the note short).

& here I thought I was the only one! 51 & just bought a bass because I kept telling my son that you could learn so much from YT. He kept telling me "right, dad" so I'm here showing him it can be done. Everybody kept telling me I was crazy, but it's such a stress-reliever! & I'm putting my money where my mouth is! So, kudos to our "teacher" and everybody else for providing me with even more inspiration. I am not alone!

As normal Mark, another great lesson. Even though I've been playing for 30 years, you always learn something new. I know all these songs and I'm not trying to sound like a smarty pants. I watch your videos because I always learn something, either new or I've forgotten over the years. Walking on the moon, The Police, great choice and my favourite band and Sting was the reason I took up the Bass. As with a lot of Stings bass lines, sounds simple enough but timing is the key. Cheers

There is much cool in these riffs. another one I learned years ago was "White Wedding" by Billy Idol. The riff is a bear to play slow like Mark says at times, but after about 20 minutes you get the idea of the pattern being used.

I switched to bass in 72 and played in a variety of bands over the years as well as my own project combining Primitive music with metal fusion... Then 18 years ago I was in a 65 mph head-on that messed me up with nerve and memory loss. My hands work in unison unless I force them which is still painful. After almost two decades of therapy and training, I have finally picked up my Bass again but its been difficult. Muscle memory is gone as is my remembrance of grips. I used to be able to do a fair Entwhistle or Squire but now I can barely play anything. These videos have been extremely helpful in my return to playing my favorite instrument... But now I am also teaching myself to play with a thumb pick
@DanCourtemanche5 ай бұрын
As a beginner in the literal meaning of the term, not a beginner from another instrument, not a beginner who has learned the basics, but a true beginner, I find it a huge barrier that every bass teacher for beginners chooses songs that are too hard, or that only have an easy riff, but the rest of the song is impossible for a true beginner. Can we please start with a song which is slow and easy from beginning to end? Beginners need enough time to get their hands and fingers in position, figure out muting, play along in time and pick the stirngs properly. That is a ton to keep track of. A song please, that's slow, easy, just quarter notes, beginning to end. Not just riffs, not just intros, but a recognizable song easy enough that you could put a bass in the hands of someone who has never played an instrument, and can play along. I hope you take this to heart Mark.

@9thchild3584 жыл бұрын
@ 47:15, I could be wrong, but I've always played this part by hitting the 4th fret D string again after the arpeggio and then going to the 7th fret A string (as opposed to 5th fret A to 7th fret A). Again I could be wrong, but really think that's how Aston played it and that's what it sounds like to me on the studio and live recordings.
