Turn that sunny lawn into beds of annual flowering plants and gravel paths. Plant vegetable plants among the zinnias and marigolds. Most people today have no vegetable gardening experience or know what most vegetable plants look like so most passersby will not notice the potato plants and broccoli plants and will just see pretty blooms of the flowering annuals. Ornamental kale plants are pretty but are also edible. Pretty sunflower plants will give you fatty, high calorie sunflower seeds. Remove most of the ornamental shrubs and trees from your property. Replace the dogwoods, Japanese maples and crape myrtles with dwarf apple and pear trees and plum trees. Understand how big around those fruit trees can grown and make sure that when they are mature they will be more than an arm's reach away from your property lines. Replace some of those azaleas, hydrangeas and rose bushes with blueberry bushes, raspberry vines or whatever kind of soft fruit plants are suitable to your climate. And put up a sturdy fence and locked gate around your property to keep strangers from easily wandering onto what used to be a lawn and helping themselves to your vegetables and fruit. When times get tough, neighbors will see nothing wrong with taking "just a few" of your vegetables or apples and that will quickly deplete your harvest. If someone did not work hard in your garden to help you grow the food, they do not deserve a share of the produce unless you decide to be charitable. When the power grid is down, it becomes very quiet at night and you will be able to hear if is someone is walking on those gravel paths. If you are hard of hearing, keep a small dog indoors to alert you at night if someone is outside stealing your fruit and vegetables while you sleep. And be ready to repel poachers and vegetable thieves -- a loaded shotgun is very useful for encouraging a thief to abandon his or her load of stolen produce and run away. A teen girl from the neighborhood could be hired to help you weed your planting beds in exchange for payment in fresh produce or home cooked meals. If you decide to keep a few backyard hens for eggs, you can feed them weeds and trimmings from your planting beds as well as table scraps. Just make sure you bring those hens inside at night and secure them in a small chicken coop inside a locked garage so they do not get stolen because every predator -- human and non-human -- likes the taste of free chicken. Chickens are noisy and other people will quickly notice that you have some hens when they are outside in the chicken coop cage you have made of chicken wire and fence posts -- especially if you also have a crowing rooster to protect your hens. So have a plan to protect the chickens from thieves/predators. The best time to learn to cultivate vegetable plants and dwarf fruit trees is before you survival may depend up home grown food. Make your gardening mistakes while times are good and learn from them. You can also learn to grow tobacco plants and dry the leaves for trade with smokers. I would avoid growing Cannabis plants because that will only bring serious trouble to your home.

We have obliterated all lawn. Our entire yard is rocked over (on top of porous landscape cloth. We have plantings in the rocks, with plantings made by digging through the rocks and cloth, with each one watered by drip irrigation. In back (surrounded by fence, are two large wicking raised beds, a hydroponic unit that hold 30 plants and seven grow boxes that provide a mulch like surface with nutrients embedded and water underneath which wicks upward into the plants. And a 4 shelf x 4 ft. Growlight setup in the garage.

Join a mycological group!! I got used mushroom blocks for a donation . They are in the guest bathtub as i have kitties and did not want them to think it was a new litter. After they are done spawning, the blocks can be broken up and added to the garden like compost. I have lots of herbs---both for culinary use and teas. They do grow fast and can be dried for spice mixtures.

The best way to hide wild food plants is to plant food patches through out the woods. This way if someone does come you can go to the woods and survive still. Indians replanted along trails they traveled, so they could have food along the way and dint have to carry so much!

Wow, you really should reconsider planting mint DIRECTLY into your garden soil. It's very invasive and you will have a hard time growing other plants around it. Plant it in a pot or other container. Learn from my mistake, you will really regret putting it directly into your garden since it's really hard to use it as fast as it grows.

Spent all morning ripping out lemon balm and tarragon. They seem to have taken over my herb garden. Oregano is very prolific too. After pulling out unwanted plants, decided I was too drastic, sorted out the plants and proceeded to dry them. Don't need them in the fresh form but they are easy to store dried and sorted.

It always sounds nice to imagine sharing our hard work with others. But as we have all recently experienced, humans cannot be content living with others in such naiveté. Human nature, coupled with our increasing social entropy, will eventually kick the crap out of any realistic idea of "sharing". You will "share" yours at gunpoint, while they just move on to the next victim. Nah, keep it on the DL. 👽✌️

It's unfortunate that that things are that way. Nobody would ever have to go without food if people didn't posses perverse traits. People made comments about just growing more and sharing, but I believe they don't understand about about some of the negative traits in human nature and society. It would be great if neighbors simply joined together and said screw the government and big corporations, but it's not going to happen

If you can grow yuca/cassava in your area you should. It's a super easy root crop that grows from stem cuttings. So every time you harvest a plant you can literally get 20 or even 50 cuttings that will easily root and grow more yuca. The roots can replace potatoes as a starch, and it's very adaptable. It can be turned into flour. And if you can grow yuca you can grow juanilama and lemon grass. Both taste like lemon without acid and they're great for throat and stomach problems. I don't know how far north they can be grown, but they're easy to grow in the south. I had all 3 in my yard in Costa Rica and I wish I had all 3 now in VA.

Yeah but once it does, it’s amazing. We have a large patch on our property that was put in 35 years ago by my grandparents (we bought their property when they passed). As long as we let them go to seed after a while, they produce well year after year and we have enough to freeze plus the daily eating at that time. So basically my grandparents sowed a crop that has fed themselves and my parents, me and my husband, our kids, and our son now has a child and he gets some of it too. Four generations have ate this crop of asparagus. There’s something to be said of that, it’s amazing.

Exactly! That's the problem with these types of videos. When times are tough we need to come together as a community and help each other out. Yes, be stealthy to a degree because if you are in extreme survival mode you can't help others. However, it would be better to have some things that are stealthy and others that are not so that it doesn't look suspicious when you are not out there looking like you are starving to death like everyone else. Also, if you are learning to grow a garden and all that, share some knowledge with other people so they can do the same to help reduce the amount of people that have no resources.

I understand, agree, and would happily agree with this idea, but I believe you are not considering the some of personalities in human nature. There always be those that want to take and possess what others have, those who want to take and destroy, and others who simply want to destroy. You will never eliminate those personalities in society. Forgive me for not knowing the proper terms. I don't know what many of things are called, but I know that they exist and are common.
@lovequinn7521
@lovequinn7521 4 ай бұрын
Also, in the time of survival situations these videos are talking about, announcing you have extra to give away is what would have your entire family offed bc some would just takeover what you’ve prepared for years for themselves. Your house, greenhouse, root cellar, everything. This is not talking about the lockdown-type situations like we had in 2020 where we can donate freely to community food stalls and be left alone.
@Kattywagon29
@Kattywagon29 4 ай бұрын
@@lovequinn7521 I would never suggest making an announcement, that's just dumb. However, in a situation where maybe you are bartering and stuff like that, you can garner extra help from people to help do things you are not equipped to do by offering them some food. If you have planned ahead for this type of thing, it shouldn't put a dent in your stores. There are ways to hide what you value most. If it looks like you are stretching things to the limit, but still giving some things away, people will trust you more and are less likely to do you harm if you have helped them in the past.
