One scene I have in mind: Yamai kidnaps Tadano in Komi-San episode 4. And this happens fairly early into the anime and prefectly describes Yamai as a love to hate character. (Love to hate are characters that are meant to be hated.) The only good this has done is this is Komi's earliest display of Courage, where she tells Yamai it's herself that will choose her friends and even considers cutting ties with Tadano to protect him. (But he thankfully got her to reconsider.)

ok well Shinji's scene makes perfect sense. yeah sure anime in general sometimes does things just for the hell of it or shock of it, but it's anime so it's expected of it, but sometimes it does things that perfectly compliment certain scene, character or story and in Shinji's case it's NOT going too far. it's realistic, sad and depressing and it's still one of my favourite anime of all time.

I first saw End of Evangrlion at an anime con not long after it aired in Japan. No one had any clue what to expect and none of us in that packed room had any clue we'd see that. I swear, you could've heard a pin drop after Shinji commented on how disgusting he was. It's like our collective brains locked up. But the more you research Anno and Evangelion, the more sense it makes why Shinji did what he did. Basically, the movie was one big f@#$ you to the fans. Anno had a mental breakdown during the TV show (where Shinji's friend gets crushed). Fans were mad at his original ending in the TV show, some even sent death threats (they appear briefly in the movie). The movie is just Anno juggling two balls. One one, his legacy. On the other, he was going to make the fans feel a mixture of sad and uncomfortable. He didn't even finish the movie before it was seen by an advance audience. There's a scene toward the end that show that very audience that someone filmed them as they werw waiting for it to start and cut it into the film right at the theater! He basically pointed the camera back at the fans. Imagine watching a movie and seeing yourself in the very movie you've waited to watch. Why'd he do it? To F with the fans. Gainax was a studio created by fans of anime that wanted to have the creative freedom to make something they themselves always wanted to see. Neon Genesis Evangelion has a sad moral to its story. It's fine to create something you're passionate about. But you don't want to be the person that creates THE project that everyone becomes obsessed about. Because that's a whole other level of pressure.
