Danke schoen! Can you make a video about predicting the meaning of Trennbare Verben based on the prefixes and suffixes? Also, can you talk about the root words in German? I love your video, and this is a really interesting topic! It's easy to predict what some prefixes like 'auf' and 'weg' mean, but some are harder, like 'ab' and 'an' and 'um'

Dear Luzi, Thank you very much for the amazing content! My question is why in some examples we did not separate the prefix even though there was no modal verbs and it was a Hauptsatz! for example Morgen gehe ich einkaufen. why not Morgen gehe ich kaufen ein? I noticed that in other examples when we did not separate it was in past tense, is that the reason? many thanks in advance

Ich gehe einkaufen. This sentence has two verbs. You can only conjugate one. Same like with modal verbs.

5:01 Why didn't you separate the verb? Is it an exception? Or because it is in perfekt tense tens

As and English speaker learning German, does English (or any other Indo-European languages) have split verbs? And in German, what is the purpose/history of them? Just helpful to understand why they exist.
@jansoltes9712 жыл бұрын
My knowledge is not sufficient to answer whether any other I-E languages (outside the Germanic group) share this feature with German, but Persian, Slavic and Romance languages cetainly don´t . However, aren´t English phrasal verbs kind of equivalent of "trennbare Verben"? I think we should not be misled by the fact, that the German praefix is at the very end of the sentence. Even though adverbs/prepositions in English phrasal verbs aren´t at the very end of the sentence, they do not always follow right behind their verbs: Don´t wake the baby up!, I´m going to take my shoes off, Can you fill this form in? All of these are possible, even though less common (at least that´s how I feel it) than versions where adverb/preposition follows right behind the verb. Also, you can only say: Don´t wake her up!, I´m going to take them off, Can you fill it in? I could also say, that the position of the adverb/preposition "right behind the verb" or "not", is in fact not important - it´s always behind, just like in German. That´s what matters here. Next, and this is just my speculation, German "trennbare Verben" could come about as a novelty after the infinitiv started to be placed at the end of the sentence and merged there with the praefix/preposition. On the other hand, English is more derived and German is more archaic in their grammar so it could equally be the other way round. Then, due to the analytic and simplified nature of English, its equivalent of "trennbare Verben" simply lost its sense in the new system (possibly an import from Scandinavia). The fact, that the feature of "trennbare" and "untrennbare Verben" is likely original in both German and English could be reflected in verbs like "understand". The praefix "unter" in German is both "untrennbar" (just as in English) and also "trennbar". When it comes to other Germanic languages, it´s very similar. Dutch is the same as German in this regard - the infinitives are not split and praefix/preposition is at the end of the sentence (could be expected), Norwegian bokmal is similar to English. G: Ich stehe um sechs auf. Ich muss aufstehen. E: I stand up at 6 o´clock. I must stand up. D: Ik sta om 6 uur op. Ik moet opstaan. N/B: Jeg står opp klokken 6. Jeg må stå opp. G: Ich mache das Licht an. E: I switch the light on. D: Ik doe het licht aan. N/B: Jeg slår på lyset.

HELLO, I HAVE A QUESTION? THE MEANING OF (ZU) IS (TO) AND THE MEANING OF (MACHEN) IS (DO) WHEN WE MIX BOTH OF THEM (ZU MACHEN) THE MEANING TURNS OUT TO BE (CLOSE). HOW CAN I TRANSLATE CORRECTLY WHEN TWO WORDS ARE MIXED TOGETHER, FOR EXAMPLE MITBRINGEN?
@bryansproles2879 Жыл бұрын
Some of these are actually pretty logical, even in English. Mitbringen is one of them. mit (with) + bringen (to bring) = To bring something WITH you. Ich bringe meinen Laptop zur Arbeit mit. = I bring my laptop to work (with me). What's weird and NOT logical at all (sticking with bringen here...) umbringen...um (around) + bringen (to bring)...you might think "to bring something AROUND something", but no... umbringen = to murder 🤣
