YourGermanTeacher Yes, we had five before but one passed away a month ago - he was one of my favorite cats. All of them are either from friends (who was looking for a home for cats) or someone dropped them off in our property.

der hase ist größer... :) the wild one is usually called hase... pet is kaninchen

I was a bit confused here because apparently "Haustier" can mean a domesticated animal of any kind, so chickens, pigs, goats, sheep, cows, etc. Of course any of them could be pets but usually they'd just be farm animals. I suppose it's clear from context if you mean a pet, but I gather you'd use "Heimtier" if you want to bemore specific. Anyway, DWDS gives the example "Die anwesenden Haustiere, eine Kuh und vier Hühner sollen erschreckt das Weite gesucht haben." I'm just learning so I assume there are some subtleties that I'm missing here.

😊 no there is no such word like heimtier. haustier is a pet. domesticated animals we call “vieh”.

I'm going by German Wikipedia: de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haustier, de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heimtier, de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nutztier, de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vieh. Also www.dwds.de/wb/Heimtier -- I guess it's an uncommon word and even most Germans wouldn't know it.
