Atari made a huge mistake by putting that Motorolla 68000 in there to "manage" the 32 bit chips because most programmers lazily just used the Motorolla and that is why most of these games do not appear to be much better than Amiga and Sega Genesis games. They literally ported the code from those games that were on Genesis/Amiga.
@thefurthestmanfromhome11482 жыл бұрын
More powerful chips were considered over the 68000,but dropped due to cost issues.
@CFWhitman Жыл бұрын
@@thefurthestmanfromhome1148 That's not really the point. The point is that by making a 68000 available in the system they gave developers a shortcut to releasing games for the Jaguar without developing anything that even accessed the 32 and 64 bit chips that made the system more powerful than the 16 bit systems that came before. The chip was supposed to just handle input and management tasks, but whole 16 bit games could run on it easily, so developers ran whole games on it and ignored the more powerful custom chips. Of course, development that did take advantage of the powerful (at the time) custom chips in the Jaguar was much more work. When Sony released a system (Playstation) that was easy to develop for, they really had an easy time attracting developers. Sega had done that with the Genesis, but dropped the ball with the Saturn, which was also notoriously difficult to develop for while still taking advantage of its power.

The 68k is a liability. Atari should have produced a JRISC CPU. The reduced instruction set makes this easy. Instead of debugging microcode, they could use 64 x 64 registers. Instructions are despatched at high frequency. The only thing which needs to run at this frequency is the 64 bit score board . Running instructions mark the registers they use there. Other instructions block if they want to access these. Thanks to a lot of registers, the compiler can optimize the order of the instructions. It would be fun if blocked instructions had their own scoreboard. Then the CPU would not block, but skip. Every time a blocking register becomes available, the CPU retries the first blocked instruction. You don’t get this when you reuse binaries from Atari ST.

As a teen, I remember seeing the Atari Jaguar in small sections of stores back in 1993. The fact that it was a 64-bit system raised a lot of eyebrows. But Nintendo/Sega at this point had become the dominate force in the industry. Plus, Nintendo/Saga had excellent first party titles along with strong third party support that Atari was lacking at that time. Even back in 1993 people myself included was already looking at Atari from a nostalgic point of view trying to get back into the console business. Looking back 20/20 Tempest 2000 should have come bundled with that system.

Jaguar had a lot of potential that wasn't explored because of the industry's love affair with all things Nintendo. @wizzgamer7 жыл бұрын
True I think the Panther should have been released as it was completely finished the problem was at the time Jack Tramiel who bought Atari was more of a PC guy than console so the company was poorly managed it started going badly for Atari when the launch of the 7800 was delayed due to Jack Tramiel taking over the company as it was originally gonna be launched a few months before the Famicom/NES with a bigger budget so who knows what could have happened there. The Jaguar was a decent console just difficult to develop for and Atari had bad relations with 3rd party developers so couldn't convince enough to come on board sadly. As for the Atari box it looks like it's going to be some sort of steam box or Nvidia shield type console lets hope it does well, thanks for watching :)

The Jaguar needed quite a few changes to be viable. IMO these were some. 1) Lack of RAM. 2MB overall was not enough. It should of been 3 or 4MB. 2) Cache for the CPU. John Carmack suggested 4KB which sounds about right. 3) The CD-Drive should have been built in from the start. 4) The 6 button controller should have been used from the start, without the gay phone pad. 5) Decent development kits. The ones they had sucked. 6) A hard core effort to get big-name Japanese devs onboard. Capcom, Namco, Square etc. A version of say Ridge Racer or some other 3D arcade game could of done wonders. 7) Better build quality.

@@FantasyVisuals If I see the architecture of the Jaguar it was clearly developed with a 68030 in mind (or perhaps a 68020) If I remember Motorola didn't want to commit to Atari to keep producing those in such numbers for a cheap enough price.. For Motorola even the 68030 seemed to be almost eol at that point in time and they were developing the PowerPC already in 1992. A shame cause afterwards there still was a market for 680x0 in the embedded market so Motorola could have made those commitments and if it fell through sell them to other customners. The maxium size of only 6 Mb for the cartridges was bigger problemen than the 2Mb Ram at that time I think. But raising one of those two would probably have ment lowering the other because of the limited of 16 Mb adressable memory in total with the 24 bit adress registers on the 68000. The buffer sizes were probably fine tuned to a far better CPU also. Since with that the data could have gone through the CPU with 32 bit instead of 16 bit at the time. When the CD was finally released it was absolutely garbage... So if it was included a year before it would have ment even shorter development time and even more design flaws in it. I'm convinced if the cartridge would have had a N64 size like 64 Mb it wouldn't have been an issue. For that time that should have been enough ... for instance the NEO GEO had a maximum of 90 mb and combined with a 68030 so a lot of those games could be ported to the Jaguar at ease. That would have be so much better than 2 lame conversions of Defender and other conversions of early 80s games.

The first party titles were the worst funny enough and always seemed to be lazy ripoffs of something that was popular elsewhere(like mk, virtua racer etc) which were given next to no budget and like a months development time. Money where however spent on crazy project like the cd add on, virtual reality helmet and a voice modem! There are some good games on the Jag but can't really come up with one that is reason enough to buy one. Rayman is probably for me the best title but can be had elsewhere for a couple of bucks. Some people criticize Atari's use of the Motorola 68000 CPU as a system house-keeping chip, as many lazy developers simply ported their 16-bit games over using only the 68000. However I take a different view. There have been many aftermarket releases for the Jaguar which have ported Atari ST games over because both systems used the 68000. For example Star Wars Arcade takes everything from the ST release except the sound effects, voice samples, and music. They've been taken directly from the arcade game. The ST has a much larger game library than does the Jaguar. The Jag can use all the games that it can get.

Looking at the Jaguar games reminds me of the Saturn games. Given time, maybe Jaguar developers would have learnt to write better more optimised code for it. when you compare launch titles on the Saturn to later games, the difference is huge.
@thomasdesposito Жыл бұрын
Especially since the complicated hardware gave developers problems making optimized games taking full advantage of the jags hardware. Very similar to the Saturns hardware which was better optimized for 2d games rather then 3d which obviously was the future. And Sony very smartly made PlayStations hardware simple to program for and better optimized for 3d.

Aside from Tempest 2000, it seems like the Atari Jaguar library is incredibly underwhelming. Also, why is Alien Vs. Predator above Tempest 2000? And why is Bubsy on here at all?

If you ever play AvP, you'll find out why.
@petrberanek42303 жыл бұрын
@@XV250 we played AVP back then and I told my friend who bought his Jaguar - if THAT (AvP) is your best game, then Jaguar is history after 1 year. And it was. Sorry, AvP is maybe good game for Jaguar, but only because there is nothing else. You dont want to compare boring AvP to PC games. There was hype back then that there is 40 games on AvP coming. Poor guy did not know, these 40 games were only games coming to Jaguar.....

so weird that the jaguar came out in 1993 but the games aside from the 3D ones, look like like they are from the mid 80s.

I all most got one when I was a teen but no one sold it had to order it through a game mag and it was a 3 month wait. So ended up saving more cash in got a ps1, missed that train wreck. Shame it did have a chance only game developers didn't just rehash 16bit games on it. But it was the area too I guess. To this day i wish I got to hold and play one in person.

I'd you aren't from this generation it's hard to understand that having a 3d space to explore was so groundbreaking that graphics could take a slight back seat and it was still over the top impressive. If I were only 15 or something I would have trouble conceptualizing a market with almost no 3d environment games. More so for console gaming. 1993 to 1997 when n64 really perfected the feel of it, a 3d game was a groundbreaking take.
@PatriotPlus1792 жыл бұрын
That Super Mario on N64 was benchmark for sure! Mario Kart was so fun. I tell you what system I had that none of my friends did. Sega Saturn. I loved that thing. I was surprised it wasn't marketed better.
@jumpsteady17772 жыл бұрын
I never remember seeing a ton of Sega marketing but my world at home life was much a Nintendo home mostly. Had a friend or 2 with sega consoles where I got my lion king and sonic experiences. Showing up for this video I definitely have a bias toward the atari jaguar. My 3 games were alien v pred, doom, and iron soldier. 3 solid games and 2 arguable the consoles best hits. Just the fact I could kick back on the edge of my bed and play Doom on my TV screen with a controller in hand was a big deal. As others mention, as long as you can live without in game music, it was one of the best ports. Sometimes I'd just take in how amazing the graphics on my TV looked and that I was really playing an interactive video game lol. All 3 mentioned games felt like beautiful cutting edge games at the time for console play and roaming their 3d spaces was so immersive. Ps. I absolutely 120% recommend doom without music (aka how the Jag version is by default). The tracks are great jams but you'll hear them alot. Especially if it's a genuine fresh experience. What's terrifying is hearing pinky demon moans faintly and getting louder for minutes on end. There I'd alot of subtle sound you'd never hear without silence.

The should have stick 16 bit like Nintendo and Sega because 1991 with 64 bit jaguar unstable console which lead them to bankruptcy
@wizzgamer7 жыл бұрын
The Jaguar was released in 1993 so making the console 16-bit would have made it under powered as Atari new that the Sony PlayStation and Sega Saturn were just around the corner as well as the 32-bit 3DO already being on the market. Their big mistake was making it have a complicated 64-bit architecture they should have built the console around the much more simpler but still powerful risc based processors used in the 3DO and PS1 to help get 3rd party developers on board. Another mistake was cancelling the Atari Panther a 32-bit system due for release in 1991 then they could have gave themselves more time to work on the Jaguar and maybe released it in 1995 with easier to develop hardware.

I don't understand people who compare the Jaguar to the N64: the Jaguar came out almost 3 years before and was the first console to run Doom (best version after the PS1's, way better than the 3DO's and the Saturn's), comparably to a 486DX33 for a tenth of the price. But Atari sucked (as well as Commodore and even later Sega).

Ultra Vortek, Dragon: Bruce Lee Story, Syndicate, Brutal Sports Football & Fever Pitch Soccer were decent titles. I probably only own about a dozen games for this system and 6 of them are in the top 7 on this list lol. Jaguar was worth it for the PC style games at the time - Flashback, Syndicate, Doom, Wolfenstein 3D. Raiden, Fever Pitch Soccer & Super Burnout saw the most play at my house.

True this probably had more exclusives than the PS4 has presently which isn't saying much as most of the PS4's best games like GTAV and The Last of Us etc are just remastered titles from last gen the only exclusive I have played so far is Uncharted 4 which is a fantastic game.
@Markis51508 жыл бұрын
Yep. PS4 is so dull,so boring. 95% of its games are elsewhere. They have a few good games but theyre just spinning out Uncharted so much now I'm not interested anymore. AVP,Tempest,Defender2k,Zero5,BattleSphere,BattleMorph,SuperBurmout,Protector. I just much prefer the Jag over Sony's machine. Preference I guess but for me the PS4 just doesn't excite me.
