Maybe I shouldn’t use the term “brand new games” when describing ports, but they are new releases on a 26 year old system. Pretty cool, right?

@Mike UK 1970 Probably for the same reasons we notice the way people in the UK say things differently..its just a simple different way of speaking. :P BUt more than likely if you pronounce it, theres a w sound in the enunciation thats kinda un avoidable; In America most folks say " JAG WAR" where as in the UK yall say " JAG U WAR" Life is silly. I looked at the specs of the upcoming jaguar in 1993 and thought "This is going to blow the opposition away" I then started an import company to distribute the Jag in the UK! it went as well as you're thinking. The lack of software support, negated its superiority over the other consoles of the time and it ultimately cost me a few quid before bailing. Was sorry to see it die, it was a far more technically advanced machine that what was around at the time, but what is the use of a game console with no games? didn't see that coming!

from my understanding the jaguar sold rather well in the uk, but the demand far outweighed the supply that atari could provide.

It’s not too crazy but crazy to know that Jaguar lives on as a dental camera. Imagin Systems, a manufacturer of dental imaging equipment, has since purchased the molding plates for the Jaguar's casing as with minor modification they were found to be the right size for housing their HotRod camera. The game cartridge molds were reused to create an optional memory expansion card.

I really can’t believe that you’re going to review the Atari and tell everyone to ignore the one through nine keys. For anyone who has ever played doom or AVP in the later levels when you have a ton of guns , imagine being able to switch to whichever gun you want without having to scroll through each gun,, Sounds cool right just like how the PC guys had it? Well as long as you have the little cover that pops over the 1-9 pad you know exactly which number activates exactly which gun, the aliens versus predator game also utilized it well, I agree for most games you probably would ignore it but for the ones that utilize it it is a godsend.

One of the problems with Jaguar games is that so many devs just treat(ed) it as a 68000 system w/ a few co-processors, so were barely more than ST/Amiga games w/ better colors. Granted, it was notoriously bad regarding dev tools and documentation, and even if devs learned how to use the Tom & Jerry chips better, there were RAM limitations and hardware bugs that added to the headache of trying to do more advanced stuff. Oh, and the card edge connectors on the back are AV (capable of composite, S-Video and analog RGB along w/ stereo audio) and DSP (that could handle things like networking). I think I still have some Jaguar stuff in a box somewhere (not system, but a few games and MemoryTrack cart for saving data for CD games). And it looks like you got a better controller. The original ones at launch have black keypad buttons (see back of system box), but they improved the feel of them a bit later and those improved ones have grey keypad buttons.

A big problem with the "64-bit" promise of the Jaguar was that the rushed development of the hardware left the next-gen chips ("Tom" and "Jerry") poorly documented and buggy, forcing developers to rely on the back-up Motorola 68000 (16-bit) for most of the processing -- resulting in a slew of games that all-too-closely resembled their 16-bit rivals.

Great review, MetalJesusRocks. I would suggest buying the reproduction ProControllers from AtariAge's Store. There was such a huge demand for the improved Jaguar controllers that they were selling used on eBay for up to $500 each so a determined member of the homebrew community raised the funds to recreate them and have a new production run on them for more reasonable prices. And as of today, I've seen one of them modified to use a thumb stick instead of the DPad. A lot of the games being converted over from the Atari ST and [Commodore] Amiga computers are being done by Cyrano J and his allies. He's a master of the Jaguar's DSP chip and so he's been able to get it to play back audio from many different sound chips such as the Atari TIA, the Atari POKEY, Commodore SID, the DAC used in Williams arcade games and "pins", the YM2149, the YM2151, and the Amiga PAULA. So in a lot of these Jaguar conversions, he'll throw in options to play the games with the different audio sound chip versions. Plus, a lot of the games have tweaked graphics. The Atari ST conversion of Gauntlet II threw in support for the Jaguar's TeamTap so 4 players could play [the original Atari ST and Amiga versions required an adapter to their Parallel Printer Port(s) for 2 extra joystick ports]. AtariAge sells an adapter to plug in the Amiga or Atari ST Mice to play Defender of the Crown with. And SainT/RetroHQ's Jaguar SD Cartridge Adapter is almost complete. SainT famously developed the excellent SD Adapter for the Atari Lynx. Rebooteroids is called that because it was programmed by the Reboot group.

It was a crazy time in gaming and people were spoilt for choice with new consoles coming out ( 3D0, CD32, Saturn, PlayStation, neo geo CD and probably more I can’t remember ). I never bought a Jaguar at the time for probably 3 reasons : 1) most of the games were ports and although the new exclusives looked cool there weren’t enough of them coming fast enough. 2) we were in a stage of CD being the format of choice going forward and spending another £200 on the CD bolt on was a lot of extra money. 3) everyone know Atari were in financial trouble so it was unlikely to win the console war. I went for a PlayStation as they were very clever with their marketing strategy of showing off the console before release in night clubs and pubs and cool new games including wipeout with its sound track , they targeted the 20 something year olds with cash in their back pockets . Sony were the first people to make gaming on a console to anyone over 18 years old not just be socially ok but even managed to make it cool. Man how times have changed !

It’s crazy because it had been setting on top of the store shelve for a very long time and nobody bought it. I just bought it out of Curiosity. It came with cybermorph game. Played a very few times and stored it away, mainly because you don’t see Atari Jaguar games in game stores. Planning on getting a flash cart whenever that’s released at a reasonable price. The good games cost to much.

Iron Soldier was also mentioned, but if you do get a Jag CD, my favorite game on that is actually the sequel to Cybermorph called Battlemorph and is vastly better compared to Cybermorph.

As great as it is that people are still releasing for the Jaguar, those ports show one of the key problems with the machine. The two custom RISC processors generally got ignored in favour of the 16 bit 68000 that was so familiar to developers. So yeh, great for ports from the ST or Amiga but not exactly flexing the Jags muscles.

I have owned a Jaguar since the 90s. I had an Atari Lynx and it absolutely blew away the Gameboy, and yet, hardly anyone (in California at least) knew about it. Every time I pulled out the Lynx people were like, "whoa, is that from the future?" and/or "Atari is still around?" So when the Jaguar came out, I was super excited, it looked really promising and as an Atari fan from the early 80s I was really hoping they would make a come back... even still when I got one at the time I was pretty disappointed. Games looked really good from the magazines or the back of the box... but when I got them home I rarely found much entertaining game play. Some looked good, but weren't much fun to play, other were fun to play, but looked like garbage. The notable exception was Alien vs Predator, but I think everyone knows that. I'll have to look through my games, as I got quite a few of them when they started clearing them out, but almost none stick out in my mind. Glad the home brew community is doing something with it, because of their lousy development kit and poor support few game designers ever really took advantage of the architecture and just leaned on the 6502 processor which did not make it stand out from the crowd of consoles. Good video, thanks for sharing.

Battlesphere could connect 16 Jaguars together for a total of 32 players. Granted, the legitimate game cartridge can run $500, the CatBox adapter can go for $500 each, and the ProControllers were going for $500 until the homebrew reproduction run happened two years ago. So crunch the monetary value of 16 Jaguars, 16 Battlesphere catridges, 16 Catboxes, and 32 ProControllers! Total insanity!

I had my original Jaguar from 1994 to 2012. I sold it in a charity auction and donated the proceeds to the ADL in memory of Jack Tramiel who had passed away a couple months prior. Last week, I picked up a Jaguar which rhe seller was selling "for parts or repair". Turned out that the Jaguar wall wart had gone bad (probably leaked capacitors). I plugged in my NES wall wart, and it powered right up. So far I have collected AVP (which the seller included), Cybermorph (I actually like that game), Doom, Iron Soldier, Checkered Flag (still loathe the steering mechanics), Hover Strike (did not own thay back in the day), and Flip Out (another guilty pleasure).

My favorite games including of course alien vs predator, doom, Wolfenstein, super burnout, rayman, tempest, and I even enjoyed cybermorph the pack in game, it was more of a tech demo then anything else but I liked it regardless. One sad thing I am seeing with these new games made is the fact that none of them are taking full advantage of the jaguars power, most of these games look like Genesis and even the regular old nes. It would really be nice to see someone making a game that takes advantage of the power under the hood. Love your channel by the way got a new sub in me!

I have a Jaguar that I acquired back when it first came out. It was a pretty capable piece of hardware at the time. However, Atari had trouble gaining a lot of software support. One reason was the obvious that Atari was an underdog at the time, and that meant there was no user base to attract developers. However, many new systems face that issue and still succeed. There were two other problems. The first was that it was not simple to develop for. You could easily make or port games using the 68000 processor that it contained, but those games would be basically 16-bit games using a small fraction of the system's power, and those detracted from its reputation as a more advanced system. To use the custom 64 and 32 bit processors that it contained as well, you had to learn the system, and that was more complicated. Developers don't like complicated development, especially for a custom chip (standard chips mean you are learning to develop for several systems). The second problem is that Atari didn't really have enough in house or contracted game development talent to attract buyers with great games. They had Jeff Minter, of course, and they managed to get some third party developers to come out with very good games, but it wasn't really enough. The final nail in the coffin of Atari was their deal with Walmart. They put a lot of money into building up inventory to sell at Walmart locations during the Christmas season of 1995. The system did not sell as well as they had hoped (of course), but the deal with Walmart allowed Walmart to ship back all unsold inventory whenever they wanted without making any further attempt at a sell-through. Walmart did this right after Christmas. This meant that a lot of Atari's money was tied up in inventory that wasn't even readily available for sale (approximately 100,000 units after having sold 125,000 altogether up to that point). They basically had no choice but to fold up and sell off assets at that time. They could have continued to make a go of it if they hadn't put so much of their money in inventory for the Walmart deal. It seems doubtful that this would have changed things in the long run for Atari. More likely it would have just allowed them to limp along for a few more years, but we'll never really know for sure. The deal with Walmart was a familiar issue with dealing with them at the time for smaller companies (most smaller than Atari was at that time). They would encourage you to provide them a lot of inventory, but if it didn't meet sales expectations, they would drop you like a hot potato with no attempt to sell the remaining inventory since they had the ability to just ship it back instead. A book publisher that almost went bankrupt after making such a deal published a book about this and other business practices of Walmart that they thought were harmful. I believe it was called _How Wal-Mart Is Destroying America_ or something like that.
