2022 Personal favorites: -Skinty Fia, Fontaines D.C. I'm a 2nd gen American with Irish grandparents who grew up hearing stories of past generations' struggles, but this album provides a fascinating look into what young Irish people face today, particularly abroad (England, in this case). -Blue Rev, Alvvays Alvvays reached their full potential here and provided the "punch" that I thought was lacking in their previous (still very good) albums. 2022 Notable Albums (I know I missed many. This is just a short list of albums that I believe signal where music is going): -Un Verano Sin Tí, Bad Bunny Bad Bunny is well on his way to making reggaeton a dominant pop fixture as Drake did with pop rap. -Motomami, Rosalía Creative album that fuses multiple genres; Rosalía will be a major force in the increasing globalization of pop music -Wet Leg, Wet Leg First widely recognized attempt to create a more accessible version of the current English experimental rock scene. "Chaise Longue" is certainly memorable.

Not sure if you actually got to listen to Spoon's album this year, but it's one of their best, possibly even their very best. Really pulling for them to win the Grammy but it's the Grammys so who really knows lol

I'm really mad at myself as I almost got the blue urban exclusive vinyl of five seconds flat by lizzie mcalpine but I ended up ordering a different album instead that I don't like as much as I thought I would. Now the blue vinyl is sold out and had I known it was going to sell out I would have gotten this album. I don't really have that many isos but I'd consider this album to be one. She's not my favorite artists but I've listened to a few songs from her new album and I liked what I heard.

Great list! Shout out for putting some love on Formentera after it was criminally absent when the year’s best album lists came around. Such a powerful and emotionally charged record; I’m glad I’m not the only one who loved it. Doomscroller was an epic cinematic behemoth of a statement that immediately won me over, with more condensed tracks like All Comes Crashing, Oh Please and False Dichotomy in the meat of the tracklist were some of the catchiest and most well-produced Metric has done in a while imo.

TLDR: I love this album, I love the music, I love the lyrics and I love Metric. Metric’s “Formentera” is my top album of the year. Start to finish (yes even the 10+ min Doomscroller 😆) is an excellent album. The writing is up their with the best they’ve ever put out. I took it as a very personal album, dealing with a loss and end of a relationship, which I was able to relate with. False Dichotomy has become one of my all time favorite Metric songs, and has one of my all time favorite lyrics too: “When you don't know if you should fall, If there'd be a net at all” Also these lyrics from Doomscroller, feel like Emily and Co are giving you a hug in a form of song: “Whatever you do, Either way we're gonna love you, Never mattered how many or how much more you've been through”

Other than Black Country New Road and The Wonder Years, who would definitely be on my list as well, Boston Manor, Bad Omens, Arm’s Length, Viagra Boys, and Lorna Shore all released great albums this year as well

Have you heard 'Nothing's real, so nothing's wrong' by Kevin Devine, released early in the year? First album in 6 years, and best for a decade, imho. 'Albatross' is one of his best songs, although I prefer an acoustic version to the one on the album. Not gonna comment on the RHCP's music, but that 'tache has got to go.

Regarding the singer/songwriter genre, I don't actually think they got worse by the mid-late 10s especially with the rise of Mitski, Angel Olsen, Stella Donelly, Courtney Barnett, Julia Jacklin, Mac Demarco, Father John Misty, Julia Holter, Kurt Vile and especially Phoebe Bridgers who has been on a steady rise since her 2017 debut. She has been a huge influence for Lizzy McAlpine for sure. Not to mention Weyes Blood who's another singer songwriter who rose to prominence a year earlier. :)

Jon, you should give Doomscroller another try! I too wasn’t sure what to think of it at first but after some time it totally makes sense and I think it’s one of the strongest tracks on that album tbh. It’s different than anything Metric’s done previously which is always cool to see from a band.
