I love the consistency as to which I always agree with John’s album takes (ie. also loved the new Metric album) but almost never on songs within those albums (ie. John specifically pointed out Doomscroller as one of the lesser tracks, it was one of my favourites of the year)

Jon, you should give Doomscroller another try! I too wasn’t sure what to think of it at first but after some time it totally makes sense and I think it’s one of the strongest tracks on that album tbh. It’s different than anything Metric’s done previously which is always cool to see from a band.

So happy to see that Wet Leg made it on the year end list! Their debut is definitely going to be hard to follow as there isn't a bad song on there. An album that was criminally underrated was Paolo Nutini's Last Night in the Bittersweet. Outside of the UK, he doesn't seem to be that well known and the eight year gap between his last release and this one also hasn't helped. However, every time he does come back he leaves a lasting impact!

Okay you just made my day. METRIC.... My number one of the year. Everything you said. I don't know why more people aren't talking about it. I'm just glad that we know. The fact that it rivals any of their work is pretty amazing. Personally, this is the sexy apocalyptic rock I was hoping the yeah yeah yeahs would kick out. Formentera is a great album and all, but for me it was a just a little disappointing following the absolute masterpiece of Art of Doubt. For reference, I also give Formentera an 8. And Art of Doubt a 9.5.

When I first heard it I think I was in a really, really bad mood, which made me give it a 6. The fact that I ever rated it below it's rightful 9 is pretty crazy to me.

Regarding the singer/songwriter genre, I don't actually think they got worse by the mid-late 10s especially with the rise of Mitski, Angel Olsen, Stella Donelly, Courtney Barnett, Julia Jacklin, Mac Demarco, Father John Misty, Julia Holter, Kurt Vile and especially Phoebe Bridgers who has been on a steady rise since her 2017 debut. She has been a huge influence for Lizzy McAlpine for sure. Not to mention Weyes Blood who's another singer songwriter who rose to prominence a year earlier. :)

Definitely had a ton of fun listening to Spoon's "Lucifer on the Sofa" and Metric's "Formentera" this year. Not sure if you actually got to listen to Spoon's album this year, but it's one of their best, possibly even their very best. Really pulling for them to win the Grammy but it's the Grammys so who really knows lol

TLDR: I love this album, I love the music, I love the lyrics and I love Metric. Metric’s “Formentera” is my top album of the year. Start to finish (yes even the 10+ min Doomscroller 😆) is an excellent album. The writing is up their with the best they’ve ever put out. I took it as a very personal album, dealing with a loss and end of a relationship, which I was able to relate with. False Dichotomy has become one of my all time favorite Metric songs, and has one of my all time favorite lyrics too: “When you don't know if you should fall, If there'd be a net at all” Also these lyrics from Doomscroller, feel like Emily and Co are giving you a hug in a form of song: “Whatever you do, Either way we're gonna love you, Never mattered how many or how much more you've been through”

2022 Personal favorites: -Skinty Fia, Fontaines D.C. I'm a 2nd gen American with Irish grandparents who grew up hearing stories of past generations' struggles, but this album provides a fascinating look into what young Irish people face today, particularly abroad (England, in this case). -Blue Rev, Alvvays Alvvays reached their full potential here and provided the "punch" that I thought was lacking in their previous (still very good) albums. 2022 Notable Albums (I know I missed many. This is just a short list of albums that I believe signal where music is going): -Un Verano Sin Tí, Bad Bunny Bad Bunny is well on his way to making reggaeton a dominant pop fixture as Drake did with pop rap. -Motomami, Rosalía Creative album that fuses multiple genres; Rosalía will be a major force in the increasing globalization of pop music -Wet Leg, Wet Leg First widely recognized attempt to create a more accessible version of the current English experimental rock scene. "Chaise Longue" is certainly memorable.

I managed to listen to 92 new albums this year and I've only heard 4 albums on your list (RHCP x2, Metric, Taylor Swift). Just shows how much music is truly out there! I'm personally not a fan of The Wonder Years but I am still happy to see one scene album make the list since scene music is how I discovered you years ago.
