Rihanna is truly one of the only artist I can think of who can take an almost 10 year hiatus and STILL have fans begging her to release music. Like when she drops her album, the world is going to end. Also 1D’s success was insane because they were basically pushed into stardom before they even released a song. Thats insane.

I love popular culture and it's fun to examine in all modern time periods, but there's something so cool about engaging with the media from my adolescence in this more subjective way. Especially when at the time it felt like the sentiment from older generations was that none of this was "real music". I like to watch video essays about Michael Jackson, the Beatles, the early days of MTV, etc. Stuff that is music history. But you say "Happy" and the "Frozen Soundtrack" I can instantly remember EVERYTHING about 2014. Macklemore winning best rap album? Yes! I remember that! I lived it! This decade is getting further away and now turning into "history". Great video! Fun for me to watch

Your video was recommended to me in my algorithm. The most perfect video, no joke, 2010s pop in an hour & 35 minute video, yes please. On top of it you filled it with facts on award-winning and highly influential albums. I graduated high school and started freshman year of college in 2014, so these songs were the soundtrack to my teenage years and growing into myself. They all mean so much to me and to me this year of music is like no other. Well, I wish you would’ve brought up Lady Gaga more in her influence and reign on pop you made up for it by highlighting two of the best albums ever made Beyoncé (self titled) and Lemonade. These two albums and to Pimp a Butterfly, changed music and culture itself. I instantly subscribed because it’s mine baffling that your channel isn’t more popular. I am 1000% signed up for more in-depth music essays that are 30 minutes plus. I understand that takes a lot of time to create, but this video was extremely well done that I highly encourage you to do so because many of us clearly loved it. Thank you for showing so much love to this decade because since it’s still recent in people’s mind, online critics and KZbin essayists tend to be a little harsh to it. Honestly, you could’ve talked about it for two more hours and I would’ve fully enjoyed it. Thank you for making this video, to your wife and anyone else who helped you make it.

SoundCloud rap, at its peak, was so real-it delivered a level of authenticity that is sought after by many. They tell stories that the mainstream is still uncomfortable dealing with face to face. They have me convinced, as a 40-something cis white male, that it’s hard as hell being an adolescent or young adult in the United States of America right now. It’s my favorite ‘movement’ of the 2010’s by far, and it’s played a large role in me appreciating the 2010’s as a music decade far more, and far faster, than I’d ever expected. Great work on the video; thoroughly enjoyed!

As someone who'd rather listen to screaming monkeys than 99% of pop music released after 2014, I'd like to thank you for showing the amount of variety, influences, and transformations that go into the genre and making me realise that pop isn't as shallow as I thought it was before watching this video. Now I can hate it informatively :) (this isn't a backhanded compliment btw, this video is really great)
@NeurosenkavalierEmilSinclair7 күн бұрын
Haha I don't get it - music nowadays is so much more diverse ( more distinct styles being popular) and in my eyes better than back then. While the before 2014s music was the music of my youth and early adult life, I really envy gen z for the music they got. Besides nostalgia, I don't feel like music was any good back then.
@invadercat35056 күн бұрын
@@NeurosenkavalierEmilSinclair It's funny that you say that because I'm literally a gen Z. Allow me to explain - I stopped listening to pop when I was around 12-13 (2016 ish) because all the music sounded exactly the same and just blended into this pile of what I can only describe as audible slush (like, the melting snow that's half-water and mixed with dirt) - it was all so slow, sad/boring, rarely used any actual instruments and when they did it was just sad piano music, the way everyone sang just seemed to drag and was really monotone, they used autotune in places where they could have easily just used their own voice, and the instrumentation sounded like elevator music. That's at least how I remember 2015-2016 and what my local trendy pop station chose to play, so I can't speak for the type of music that's playing now, but my experience left a bad taste in my mouth so I'm extremely turned off from pop. The reason I cut it off at 2014 is because I remember the music being more energetic and easy to dance/sing to before then. This isn't to say I automatically like anything before 2015, I don't even generally like pop to begin with, I just find it more tolerable when it's trying to be unabashedly fun (or at the very least attention grabbing) than when it's drab and serious. Slower and quieter sad songs just don't sound heartfelt to me when there's no instruments and the raw voice of the singer is masked by autotune.

I never thought I’d need a 90 minutes doc about music in the 2010s but here I am great explanation of the background that was happening when all this songs and trends came out and really enjoyed the nostalgic visit to my late teens/ early 20s. Now we gotta wait 5 years for the 2020s commentary 😭

Can we talk about glee and its dissemination of music to the public especially during 2010-2012? Bc I feel like that shit was insane.

Glee def could have fit in here. Honestly could make a whole video on how it affected Pop in the 2010s

First video of yours I've ever seen, and I subscribed within 5 minutes because I loved your intro/explanation of the "rules" and shout out to your wife! Sounds like I'm just a year older than you so this is still the most influential music on my life. Even though I lived through, I can never get enough of learning about it. Such a fascinating decade.

Early 10s was like a continuation of 90s house/techno. One of my favorite mini-eras of all time. Hugely influenced my musical taste.

Thank you for putting in the section abt lil peep, xxx, and juice wrld. I was in middle school when they were at the height of their popularity and they had such a big impact on me and my generation. Truly all three of their stories must never be forgotten. Their music got me and my friends through our adolescence and now that I’m an adult i just hope that their legacies and the potential all three of them had as artists and as people can be remembered for what it was. Tragic events not forgotten or lost media.

now that... that is a pop dissection. except, halsey could've been mentioned as well. halsey, just like lana del rey were leaning into alternative, and given they are alternative, they infused hip-hop in their art, which is an interesting direction given that hip-hop and alternative aren't a total polar opposite but rather, compliments each other really well, may it because of the genre history. going back with halsey, if lana is considered to be a pioneer of pop influence from the alternative landscapes of the 2010's and a quintessential icon of the genre, halsey further cemented the idea of infiltrating pop and hip-hop which catered to a tantamount number of hip-hop fans alike. not to discredit lana as if hip-hop doesn't like her, but the difference between lana and halsey is just halsey continuing lana's direction in influencing pop, trap, hip-hop in their sound. but in recent years, halsey has regressively went back to her roots which lead to the great impersonator, which is a darker in tone and finally scrapping away from trap.
@JukeboxHistory29 күн бұрын
I don’t disagree. Halsey has built a great career over the last ten years and honestly I think their 2020s run has been tough to beat. If I Can’t Have Love is one of my personal favorites from this decade. In regard to the 2010s they did have pretty strong presence in the second half. There are a few figures I left out or could have touched on more and Halsey was one of them. Will most likely bring up them in a future video though
