Top 3 Best Small Towns Around Salem Oregon

Silverton resident here. I'm sure you didn't intend to mislead, but I wouldn't refer to Silver Creek as a river. It's barely 20 feet from one bank to the other and it's no more than knee deep in most places. That said, it is indeed charming, and there are a handful or restaurants that have outside patios that overlook it. You're also correct that the overall food scene is pretty terrible. Many of the restaurants close at 2:00 PM. On the plus side, crime is very low and there's practically no homeless problem.

Thank you for pointing that out. You're correct- Silver Creek is not a river, that was a flub up on my part. If it was, it would be the worlds smallest river ◡̈ What else should I have mentioned in this video but didn't? Anything major that was left out of the video? Does Independence have a nice pocket of character homes near downtown?

Yes it does, to the south and west of the downtown area. A lot of Victorian style, craftsman and other styles. Kinda depends on what you’re looking for but there are certainly pockets close to downtown.

Independence is pretty small so its more like little pockets of older/character/charming homes. The yards seem to be pretty hit or miss and it varies widely as to how well they are maintained. If your main focus is finding a character/older/charming home in a community that keeps their yards maintained, I'd look into Silverton. If your main focus is being on the West side of the Willamette River and you're deciding between Dallas, Independence or Monmouth and your criteria is still character/older/charming home and maintained yards, I think you would have a better shot of finding that in Independence. But again, Independence isn't very big, that in tandem with low inventory means having time on your side will be invaluable to ensure you can find a place that meets your needs. You are a mind reader. LOL. I like the location of Independence, being at Salem's doorstep. It is really hard to find what I want: small town, nice updated character home, historic active downtown, in a nicely kept neighborhood. Oh, and a first floor bedroom.
