My advice if you're going to fish these beauties. Once it's in the net cut the line and get the rod out of the way, then remove the hooks. I use a hook snipper if I have to to cut the hook first, this can make it much easier for you and the fish. Saves your hands your equipment and the fish for another day. 👍

I'm from the uk I fish for pike and they should be respected because they are a delicate fish it's people like yourself that make them out to be man eaters and monsters but in actual fact your the monster

I'm sorry Matt. I didn't realize how bad my comment could sound. I don't mean to make them sound awful or to treat them harsh. To clarify, when I get one of these gentle giants I first cut the line and put the rod in a safe place so it's out of the way, then I take my side cutter and cut the hooks ,absolutely not the fish. I don't dare yank a hook from any sensitive spot. After the lure is free it gets put somewhere out of the way. Then any bits of hooks left can be gently removed or trimmed to a minimum. After catching quite a few big ones I found this to be the easiest way to minimize any damage to myself my rod and most importantly these big beautiful fish. I hope my comments help prepare people that go after these fish to be equipped for them first. I hate when I see folks with just a pliers trying to get their lure back with hooks in tacked. Hooks are cheap folks. Don't hesitate to cut a hook. And thanks Matt for pointing out my poorly worded comment 👍

So your saying don’t even try removing the hooks? Obviously you try that first and if it’s too hard than you leave the hooks in
@paulcoenen79182 жыл бұрын
@@connormcmahon4962 Yes , but I'm pretty fast at grabbing the cutters for the sake of the fish and my hands and fingers . Hooks are cheaper than a trip to the ER and I hate to hurt one of those big fish.

@@paulcoenen7918 Ive caught over 5000 pike never once have i had to cut a hook.. even if its through a gill raker i just support it with 2 fingers and pull gently. Ive had pike swallow a treble and i just flip it around and remove that way.. pike can handle some abuse in the mouth..but u can damage them easily by using a too small net or laying them down on the ground, but thats damage u only see when u recatch one... I use a pair of 20cm foreceps by spro for most of the unhooking (got some bigger pliers for on the boat).

My mom caught a 49 incher and she got really lucky .. she hooks the fish.. she screams in excitement. Gets line caught in the motor.. dad gets pissed...he untangled the whole line without cutting it.. holds tension on the line and tells her to reel it in so we don't waste the line and get it all messed up.... he lets go .. my mom says there is still a fish on it.. he didn't believe her since he didn't feel any weight when he held it... she keeps reeling it in and it was so tired from fighting the boat it was just chillin not even trying to swim away anymore lol I caught a 47.4 incher once and my dad a 45 incher biggest fillets I've ever had.
