My "Top" pick would be the Better Safe Radio, as I work in emergency services I know and understand the codes used on air, so I know what is going on. Plus being able to listen to the different services is a must in emergencies. When traveling different agencies use different frequencies from your home area so this radio would be awesome for keeping abrest of what is happening where you're at in real time.

My top GMRS HT is the Wouxan 805G. Has the super heterodyne technology, so it's solid. It's also the best quality/ bang for your buck coming in at $99.00. I bought mine a while back on sale for $69.00/$79.00

TOP GMRSHT I'm thinking about getting the last of the three radios you mentioned. From what you explained about that last radio, it offers more capabilities. I've signed up with hamradio and plan to start studying after the weekend is over. $200 for the radio is a sacrifice. But I like listening. 👍 Cheers! Thanks for your awesome Chanel, videos and knowledge.

My current favorite is the compact Wouxon KG-S88G superheterodyne with very nice audio. That little radio is so cool. Fun to use and fun to carry. It's exciting to actually be able to get on the air again and enjoy radio. The ham repeaters are all dead in the water. I NEVER thought I'd see the day when GMRS would one-up ham radio, but it has. The problem, ham radio is going in too many different directions to its detriment. But EVERYTHING about GMRS is focused in one spot which promotes cooperation and UNITY.

I've got that one and the KG-UV9PX, and I agree completely. The size, simplicity, and radio quality of the KG-S88G is just wonderful. The KG-UV9PX is much more capable, but sometimes that's just a lot more than I want to deal with.

GMRS is 22 specific channels like CB. Plus 8 repeaters channels. Only programming needs are the CTCSS codes for your area repeaters. Which you'll have to figure out what those are. Don't need internet to program. Keep watching KZbin videos and the info will come together.

I don't know if such a thing exists, but I am looking for a handheld radio that can receive on all frequencies under 1 Ghz (or higher if possible) and be able to transmit on voice channels. My TOP GMRS HT is my Baofeng A58s tri-bander. Unfortunately, this HT isn’t manufactured anymore. Now they have the BF-A58s, which is 1 watt instead of 2 on LOW, and only 5 watts instead of 10 watts on HIGH for 2m & 220mhz, only 5 on UHF. The issue I have with GMRS HT’s is that they are advertised as 5 watts but only transmits at 3 watts if you are lucky. The first one from BTECH with the BlueTooth sounds great while driving, I’m all for anything handsfree these days. Police officers tend to mistake ham radio ht’s as cell phones and try to give you a ticket under the Electronic Distracted Driving Law here in Hawaii. I already beat one ticket a couple years ago because ham operators under the law here are considered first responders like Police, Fire and EMS. Just mail in a copy of your FCC license and a straight forward explanation of the circumstance and bingo, dismissed with prejudice! 👍 Aloha!

Hi Ham Radio 2.0, these are my TOP! I have the Wouxun KG-UV9G pro. My KG-UV9GX has been on B/O since May and s/b here next week. The pro is an excellent radio and its reception is amazing. It can pick up frequencies all over theUS and Canada. Chirp has all the frequencies for the Wouxun to be downloaded to. Most channels are in the software to be added. I also own the BTech GMRS pro. I only have one right now. The other one was damaged in transit. The app is easy to use, the reception could be better. When my Wouxun is on say channels 19 the BTech has a hard time tuning in on the frequency. When I get the mate to it (5 week b/o) I will test the texting. So I totally agree on your picks. I have been into all types of radios since the late 1970’s and am amazed at how the interest in GMRS and HAM has exploded. I do have my GMRS licenses.

I have 2 of the TOP 3 mentioned here. BTECH Pro and KG-935G. both of these are great in their own ways. My TOP pick is the BTECH Pro I really like the ability to send and receive location. My wife and I love biking and hiking. I'm more of a risk taker. Basically, I do a lot of bad idea stuff and sometimes find myself in sticky situations. Being able to send my location is a good backup if needed. Texting can also be good when silence is needed.

Another reason for multiple channels is to program different GMRS repeater tones if you travel. Some radios only allow you to program one tone for each repeater input channel so you have to reprogram the radio if you travel where there are other repeaters using the same channel but with a different tone.

I'm sorry, but the btech's and boafengs have absolute garbage filtering. They go deaf in almost every "real" situation. Without an inline pass band filter, I've confirmed and showed multiple people time and time again. If you set a baofeng ht or mobile side by side with a slightly higher costing ht or mobile, and send someone off into the world to call out until they get below about S5. You can have the SQL set to zero, and you will hear nothing but static at a certain point, while the higher cost radio will continue to RX just as it should. Those wideband chip designs are total garbage. If you truly needed to hear someone in a situation, and couldn't because you wanted to spend $60 on a handheld instead of $100, it's not worth it. I had a friend with his baofeng standing next to me, and he couldn't talk to our buddy simplex, or hear a repeater that I could no problem with a slightly higher costing HT. He has never purchased another wideband chip radio since. Pure garbage.
