Just purchased an OM1n MD. ($120 AUD) excellent camera that I always wanted. Bought an OM10 in 1980. Only recently changed the light seals. Both are taking great photos.

I do very much like your videos. They are so interesting, well-informed and complete. I especially like how you place the camera in the context of the time. This one was funny with your description of the Olympus FTL.

My OM-1 is one of my favorite cameras to shoot for personal enjoyment. What really surprised me about it was not its size (I had owned a Pentax MX before), but how light it is and how quiet its shutter is. It has a quiet elegance to it without feeling cheap or unreliable. Maitani talked a lot about making a unique camera, he certainly succeeded.

After close to 20 yrs of neclect in not favourable conditions, the OM10 my mother gave me still worked perfectly. I have a few OM1's in my collection and back in the day, was allowed to take a few photo's with my father's OM2. At one point i had an OM4, thinking i needed more bells and wizzles. From all those, the OM 1 is my favourite. It was my first SLR before trading it for an OM 4 that in its turn was swapped for a canon eos. Then the OM1 was the first 'new' SLR again when i picked up film photography again a few years back. Fan girl? I'd say h***yeah 🎉😊

The OM10 was my first camera, handed down to me in middle school from my father. I’m currently shooting on an OM2n but using all the same 40 year old glass my dad had back in the day. These cameras are fantastic. I’m a loyal Olympus fan because of them.

Sure wish I lived in this nirvana where OM10’s are $30 and a nice 50mm f1.8 is $10 or so. I had to check when this video was uploaded because it’s been about ten years since I saw those kind of prices here n the UK.

I have two FTL cameras and both work (for now). However, I bought them dirt CHEAP for the assortment of Olympus M42 lenses they came with. The tiny indexing pin on the lenses clear the step up mounting ring on some of my Ricoh made TLS cameras. Note: some of the TLS cameras came with the step up mounts but some did not. The lenses will not work on M42 flush mounts without removing the tiny indexing pin which I don't need to do.

One thing that I thought was the best feature for the OM-1 and OM-2 back in the day was the optional leather hand strap that attached to the grip on the winder or motor drive. It gave the photographer really good one hand control of the camera. Have you ever seen one?

I noticed in your review of the three Olympus models that you compare features and maybe some reliability differences. I owned an OM1 and and OM1n then added an OM2. The OM2 stood out in one VERY important thing and you did not mention it at all. Off the film metering. Yes, off the shutter curtain or the film itself. Not just off the film plane but in a well researched horizontal pattern. Not a center weighted or full frame averaged meter or a spot meter, no, a real life pattern that simulated what generally people aimed at. It was the first camera that could do night photography on auto exposure up to two minutes. It was a masterpiece for exposure even though many thought that film stock does not always have the same reflective so it could make mistakes. Even reciprocity was calculated for long exposures. Discussions in Photo magazines went crazy.

I was surprised by the lack of him mentioning this. The OM10 has the same technology. There was nothing like it at the time.

One of the camera manufacturer's that I was least familiar with was Olympia. I have attempted to purchase the OM-1 several times on eBay but lost the bid. A few minutes later I saw an ad locally for a collection of cameras including an OM-1. Unfortunately, it was sold earlier in the day, but the OM-2 was still available at the same price. I decided to purchase it. I must say that I am impressed with the weight, the design and the overall engineering of the camera. I am taking a trip in a few days and did not want to pack my large Nikon F2, or Topcon Re Super. The Olympus OM is easy. The only concern that I do have is the film advance feels different than I am used to. On this camera it stops after the forwarding is completed. However, I can advance the film without clicking. I do not know if this is an issue with the camera, but am fine with it now.

While the OM-1 is more famous and historically significant, to my mind the OM-2 was more revolutionary: Off the film metering permitting incredible accuracy at long exposures, the first SLR to feature through the lens flash, aperture priority exposure - all amazingly in a package no bigger and barely heavier than the original OM-1. It's also more flexible: in "manual" mode it functions almost identically to an OM-1. But aperture priority auto is a function you want. There's a reason why most pros favored this shooting mode: It just works really, really well. Also, I have never had the privilege of seeing an OM-3Ti in the flesh. I have had the opportunity to try out an OM-3. Certainly a beautiful camera! But I must respectfully disagree with your "best of the best" characterization. Without the accuracy of a stepless electronically controlled shutter, the multi spot metering system seems almost gimmicky and overkill. I would argue that the OM-4Ti is the best of the OM series. Perhaps the best manual focus 35mm SLR, or even best 35mm SLR of them all.
@rinusborg5 ай бұрын
More regarding the OM series. The reason it sounded fairly quiet was due to the air-braking pistons attached to the mirror. Just before the mirror would hit the upper motion the pistons compressed the air and slowed it down. Also the remaining gap below the ground glass was surrounded by a baffle that formed an enclosed area. The air could not escape quickly so it also helped slow the mirror and avoid the well known "slap" from other cameras. The mirror slap was much less than any other camera. The OM series were revolutionary in many ways but these details are not very well known. Back then innovation was what drove the market. Everyone came out with innovative marketing worthy changes. Amazing time. The OM10 was a very nice camera indeed. Sadly, one drop and it was an expensive paper weight.

I dont know about the OM-10 being cheap anymore maybe in Japan but over here they are selling for ridiculous prices. Very hard to find for less than $60 anymore but most are well over $100. I bought my OM-10 for $8 with a 50 mm F1.8 the original flash and the camera itself with the manual adapter too back in 2017 and I still have it. It was my first film camera.
@anta40 Жыл бұрын
In Indonesia, it's usually cheap (if you buy from fellow users, not camera sellers). Finding an OM-10 with the 50/1.8 on $100 or less is pretty common.

An OM-1 was the only SLR I've ever owned over the years that developed fungus in the viewfinder, which was a shame as I really enjoyed using it. A very intuitive camera to use, I particularly liked the the shutter speed dial around around the lens mount.
@seralegre Жыл бұрын
is not fungus, is a well known problem of some foam inside that decays and deteriorate the prism. Is mandatory for every OM1 to get ride of that prism foam. Apart from that and the battery modification, you have a camera for decades.
With regards to the longevity of a camera, would you say the mechanical shutter on the OM-1 makes it a better option than the OM-2?
@seralegre Жыл бұрын
yes, the OM1 will be always possible to fix. When the electronics die gets way more complicated for camera technicians. That's the reason i bought an OM1 recently.

Oh, we actually have a romantic view on these old things. The reality is very different. Most people will end up with 70% of the roll of photographs being unusable junk. That's an expensive waste of time and money from these cameras. It takes a skilful photographer to get a full roll of useful images from these cameras.

Hi. How about the availability of the batteries for these three?
@japanvintagecamera8869 Жыл бұрын
The OM-1 requires a 1.3 volt battery (you can use an LR44 battery with a diode adapter or a Wein Cell), the other two use modern batteries.
@petercastell4450 Жыл бұрын
An interesting video, a few things you didn't mention the OM 1 was originally the M 1 but Leica objected because they had an M 1, the OM 1 has mirror lock up to reduce vibration, interchangeable focusing screens, for any one thinking of buying one if it has a hotshot in good condition carefully take it off wrap in tissue paper and put it in a small box because they are made of plastic which has become extremely brittle over time, the built in light meter was made for a mercury 1.3 volt battery which are no longer available so to get an accurate reading with a 1.5 volt battery you need to get an adapter, if you don't know this history of the camera have it serviced because the prism had foam rubber to cushion it this has broken down over the years and will destroy the prism so needs to be removed

I really don't see why the OM10 is in the top three here instead of the OM20, which is basically the same camera but with a built in shutter speed ring for full manual control without a fiddly adapter.

For some reason the OM20 didn't catch on like the OM10, and even here in Japan I don't see many OM20 cameras. If you find an old Olympus SLR in a thrift store on pawn shop, odds are it will be an OM10.

You have a lot of romantic views on these limited options cameras. Once the subject is further away from you beyond 10 metres, these cameras are useless. These days you can't get close enough to a race to actually take a worthwhile photograph from these cameras in stock form. It does nice unique people's photographs and city scape photography 📸 but beyond that, it's a waste of time and money. These things shouldn't be recommended to most people. These ARE stylish cameras 📷 👌 😎 Most people are boring and don't appreciate stuff and will just destroy them in no time at all. STOP selling them to the masses. Most people don't want or don't realise they produce a unique set of colours. It's been 40 years and they still don't know this basic information.

Advertising of this type of cameras is nonsense. Digital constructions give high quality and above all for free. For photography on film, wanting to take pictures, we have to buy a film and go through the whole process to ecite our eyes. It's like I would replace a new TV with an old one.

🤦🏻♀️ Why are you commenting crap on a video made for film photography enthusiasts if you have no interest in it? Have you ever stopped to think that it’s the whole process we enjoy? From slowing down and being more mindful about pushing the shutter, getting to know photography inside out because you’re forced to with a manual mechanical camera…to developing and holding the finished result in your hands. What most people have is a cloud full of half arsed photos and a few good ones because they can just mindlessly click away. What you get work film? Physical copies of beautiful quality photographs that you created from start to finish. The doors that way 👉🏼 take your irrelevant nonsense comments out of it 👋🏼✌🏼
