Just a note to appreciate the effort made by a native Dutch speaker and a native German speaker to converse in English for the sake of those of us not competent to follow in either language.

I agree. I feel fortunate because I cannot speak any other language except English.

@@davidanderson3425 Indeed, I have French and German to O Level standard, but that was forty years ago. Curiously, both my brother and sister speak Dutch, but I don't.

But they both don’t know fluent German or Dutch? Correct me if I have the wrong assumption on this. That’s one reason for speaking in English.

This was amazing. I expected him to pull out a sport, lilliput, and some random special edition so I was really interested to see how this CEO isn't just a kaweko CEO but a real FP enthusiast. What an amazing and broad interest in pens! I loved the story about his wife complaining he's spending more on pens than he's bringing in... Can relate :)

This has been my favorite episode yet! So excited when I saw the first pen - I found a very similar pocket pen made by the Morrison company in the 1920’s. Even has a Small gold link at the top to be worn as a necklace. It’s just lovely! Mr. Gutburlet’s whole face just twinkles when he talks about his pen treasures - and how refreshing that there is no talk of how much it’s worth, or how much he will resell it for. Collecting at it’s purest. Bravo, sir! AND, I LOVE the dog pen holder! Excellent!

Another standout in the wonderful Top 3 Pens series. Mr. Gutberlet is intelligent and charming and has some great stories to tell about his pen collection. I recently purchased my fifth Kaweco Sport--distinctive from the others as it features a guilloche pattern--and I will now think of Mr. Gutberlet whenever I use it. I would love to see more of his collection.

What a delight! I was not much of a Kaweco fan until I visited the factory store a few years ago. They were charming and it was wonderful to see more about the history of the brand. Thank you for this.

This was a truly refreshing top 3 pens! This gentleman’s love and admiration for writing instruments came through and jumped out of the screen! Quite touching really! I think people who are truly passionate about pens can pick up on this trait in others, kindred spirits if you will. Your on fire, Joost!! Please, keep them coming!! And thank you very much for this wonderful series :-)

Fascinating and charming. The mind of a collector who also has a creative mind. I particularly liked the comment about spending more one month than you make. Who needs food, right! I have never moved to the $1,000 range, but I keep an Arco model in my “watching” list, always fearing that I will reach for he elusive and spend more than I make in a month (beyond food and rent anyway). Only the curious really ever create, and Mr. Gutberlet is a marvelous example.

You can have the very best of fountain pens. But what matters is how good is your handwriting and what you write. I mean your thoughts, your imagination, your precision in what you write. I have so many pens but my most precious is my Dad’s Sheaffer fountain pen with a gold nib which my dad bought in 1961. The pen’s body had deteriorated and so I got the nib fitted in to an antique Sheaffer pen and still I write with it. Whenever I write with that nib I get goosebumps and thoughts of my dad flood my heart.

I have often thought that every pen comes with a writer, that a writer is an interesting person, that by extension, every pen is interesting, because it's an entree for meeting the writer. I have talked for an hour with a person I just met over a pen. I've been around pens so long they never surprise me and although they are generally interesting, the owners are very much more so.

Herr Gutberlet is a charming individual, Joost - but then I need not really emphasise that. This gentleman - & from his own personal collectrion, helped me to repair & replace parts from my 1950's V12 Sport; that he did so, demonstrates his complete passion for the writing instrument, so I shall always be grateful to him for that kindness & generosity of spirit. Whenevr I ink up that Sport model, I think of him; in these somewhat difficult times, it is heartening to know that such altruistic, unconditional sincerity is alive & kicking. Fascinating trio of scribes !! On a footnote, can you tell me what that last Kaweco model is, please ? Thanks to you both, Joost & Michael, Kindest regards, Andrew 🙂

I have pens ranging from a 1912 Conklin Crescent Filler up to a Namiki Maki-e Emperor, but one of my very favorite pens, one I use more often than any other single pen, is the Kaweco Brass Sport with a gold nib. It is, for me, as close to a perfect poen as I've ever used, and it really was love at first write.
