@@LetMeFLY649 This. The reason capes & cloaks went out of style is because they became impractical after we invented coats with sleeves. The purpose of the cape/cloak was to wrap around your torso to protect it from the weather (it was little more than a thin blanket to wear over your shoulders when outside), but they had limited practicality because they could only drape over your body & often got in the way if you had to bend over or use your arms for a task. The invention of sleeves allowed designers to move the cloak/cape in the direction of coats (which are exponentially more effective at the same goal). This is also why seeing someone wearing a cape today raises red flags - because they're going out of their way to use an out-of-style, outdated method. It'd be the same as if women started walking around in bloomers again. When someone flaunts their refusal to conform to social norms, it raises red flags that they may be a sociopath and thus dangerous.

Dacian warriors who fought the Romans had belt loops. There are several reasons that I don't wear braces ('suspenders' in British English are what ladies use to hold up stockings). Perhaps chief among them is that going to the lavatory is so much more difficult. If I am wearing a waistcoat and jacket, I have too take them both off before I can get my trousers down.

Can confirm. I will have to disrobe until the suspenders are exposed, then down off the shoulders to use the lavatory. It means that I have to plan ahead a bit and make sure the stall has the hook inside the door to hang the other layers on. At my place of work, it's a solid 50/50 whether it's available or not.

Fan of your channel lindy. I've had that problem too. I generally don't wear them when I have the waistcoat on (longer church activities are the exception).The pants should fit well enough without them, which is tough if they aren't tailored too. But outside of that, I go full 'Gordon gecko', the jacket doesn't stay on, so it isn't a problem

Once you try suspenders it's hard to go back. Having one's guts cinched down tight all day is brutal on the intestines and I suspect has negative health consequences.

My only excuse to useing a belt is that i lose weight and now all of my pants are bigger, and i mean really So the belt keeps them around my hips better than a suspender that i would use when i get smaller pants

Heavily depends on your weight as well though. When I was heavy belts were incredibly uncomfortable because as you and others have mentioned, my stomach was doing all the work holding everything up. Once I lost weight the belt starts working as it originally was intended and grabbing a large part of your waist at once, so less pressure on one point at any time. It's the difference between someone bear hugging and pulling you, or grabbing your arm and yanking, one's a lot less comfortable.

Having to carry the weight of your pants with your shoulders is kinda counter intuitive. Im an engineer and carry many tools i need on a day to day basis with carabiners on my belt loops. If i had to carry that weight not with my hips but my back... i am sure i had backpain every day.

Not only were they more comfortable for driving, since they weren't constantly pressing on my bladder, but i als loved how they just never slipped down. I suffer with Crohns disease and suspenders are game changing. A belt puts pressure on my bowels which is quite painful and due to swelling I need to adjust the belt frequently through out the day. With suspenders there’s no additional pain and allows my bowels to swell and move about without any adjustment! Highly recommend trying them.

Suspenders are so much more comfortable and functional for blue collar work. Belts have to be uncomfortably tight to keep pants up and they always slide down when doing manual labor.

Depends on your build. If you're heavyset then yes, belts basically use your gut to hold your pants up. When I lost weight belts became a *lot* more comfortable due to working as intended and grabbing a larger section of my waist, meaning less pressure on one point. Also helps that I was no longer built like an upside-down pyramid, so the pants actually have something to grab on to lol.

I have an outdoor laboring type job. As I’ve gotten older I’ve found that my summer pants pretty much stay up with a belt. Once fall hits, I switch pants due to weather. These pants seem much more interested in sliding down. I started wearing suspenders a couple of years ago and it’s so much nicer. They can feel a little restrictive from time to time depending on the work I’m doing, but is better than pulling my pants up every ten minutes. Been wearing suspenders for the last 4 years. Started because I lost a lot of weight, couldn't afford to get my suits tailored, and a belt would have caused bunching. Pair of cheap suspenders were ten bucks. Haven't gone back because it's so much more comfortable and gives me a unique look in the office. Being in sales it also gave me a conversation starter. I’m an attorney and wear suspenders every time I wear a suit (which is most workdays). I find that for me (I’m a pretty fat guy) they work better and feel better than a belt. Drawbacks are: -if I am wearing a vest while in the bathroom and need to lower my trousers, I have to take the vest off (and hope the stall has a coathook); and -a pair of silk suspenders, worn 3-5 times per week, will show serious wear after about six months; and they aren’t cheap.

Dillards not only sells suspenders, but their tailored section sells Hart Schaffner Marx that has slacks to be worn at the waist. They'll even put on suspender buttons on the slacks

Not really, it's closer to a sash. Belts involve a locking mechanism, it can be a pin or a ring, but belts have a mechanism. The drawstring is closer to a sash or a simple knot. It doesn't require any mechanisms

Nice history. One extra step was that for a long time before the suspenders when pants were at the natural waist, they were laced to the doublet so that your effectively your jacket acted as your suspenders. In some cases there was a hidden lacing strip inside the doublet, but in many early 17th century paintings, you can see the ties as decorative bows along the waist.

A lot of it has to do with the height at which trousers are worn. High waisted trousers work great with suspenders, the lower it goes the worse it gets. Especially for your shirt.

When I purchased my first tuxedo (40 years ago), it was set up for suspenders. Fast forward to my latest tuxedo, I had to have the tailer remove the belt loops from the pants and put in buttons for the suspenders. Same thing with the last suit I purchased. I'll confess to wearing a belt with leans only due to the cost to retrofit each pair for suspenders.

Easy to do. Buy "batchelor buttons" which are the buttons on jeans. Essentially they are rivets, easy to fit.

I'm not sure how big of a difference it would make in terms of practicality or style, but the suspenders I own have teeth on the end that clamp onto the waist of my pants. I actually didn't know suspenders went on buttons and assumed most just had toothed clamps as well lol. The downside is that it's a bit meticulous to place the clamps equally around the waist's hem, but I assume it would be a cheaper/simpler option if your pants only have a belt loop.

I loved wearing braces back in the '80s. They looked good with a suit. I stopped wearing them in the '90s because fashion in the office became business casual. When I sat at my desk wearing braces, people would joke that I was sitting at a desk and not a tractor. Also I learned to hate suspenders because they had clamps that attached to the pants fabric and ripped holes in very visible areas of the waist. Wish braces would come back. They had a great look and held up pants a lot better than a cinched waist belt.

The combination of low waisted trousers and belts trying to stay on non existent hips while working, became intolerable. Suspenders just do a much better job. I wear suspenders with my tuxedos primarily. I love how they make me appear taller and more confident in my dealings with others. They also help in getting my cummerbunds positioned perfectly. And to top it off they make my bow ties stand out better. About the only complaint I have is that when my tuxes go to the cleaners, they are a bit difficult to undo. But all things considered, I would recommend using suspenders over belts any day.

One condition where you wouldnt want suspenders is working pants that you might stuff full of heavy tools on top of the usual. It can lead to severe lower backpain depending on how long you wear it, while belt wont, because it puts the weight directly on the hips insted of your spine and then hips.

You can actually buy suspenders that are made to hooking to a belt. You can loose t your belt taking pressure of your bladder all the while being able to feel the load less because now it’s distributed over your entire torso and hips. Instead of one or the other

In my experience, the suspenders are best in this situation. I used to wear belts and had heavy tools in my pants, but i had to keep the belt so damn tight for it not to fall down, and keeping it that tight were uncomfortable and painful. And still i had to keep pulling my panta up. Switched to suspenders a few years ago, and now my pants feel light and i experience no discomfort.

I sell suspenders, I recommend avoiding Chinese made suspenders, their clips are notorious for letting go. I only sell US made suspenders, they never let go. I wear suspenders made by Perry Suspenders of Illinois. Perry - inventors of hook suspenders.

I don't mind belts when I want to wear them or when it's more convenient, but I go to a university where uniforms are both pants and pencil skirts and since my weight is changing a lot due to lifestyle changes, it's awesome to wear suspenders and not have to worry about them both falling when the weight shifts. More people need to watch Red Green Show and get back to suspenders. Really fell in love with them last year when I bought my first set while losing weight. It sucks most belts have an inch gap between holes and as your waist size adjusts where one hole is too tight and the next one over though is too loose. i'm not trying to be mean, i'm very serious about this: I very rarely care about how men look, but when I see a belt and suspenders at the same time it's one of the very few things on men I think looks absolutely silly. Use one or the other. Belt and suspenders makes you look like you are trying to show off and very cringe, like you want to wear suspenders to look retro but you don't need them. You are not doing that, but personally if I saw you I'd basically think you were a show-off. So frankly your idea that you're wearing a belt not to look weird makes you look even weirder because you have the suspenders. Again, i'm not trying to be mean, i'm trying to tell you how it looks to an outsider, and i'm telling you people probably think you're a poser, in all seriousness. I actually wear my suspenders under my shirt, but if you need to tuck your shirt in I have heard there is a product out there that lets you do that. If I had to tuck my shirt in I'd just wear a belt tbh, or wear the suspenders on the outside and wear a jacket like the old days.

@@alemar1122 I wouldn’t call it weird, but if it were “weird,” it’s always better to double down and embrace it than to try and fit in. You’ll just end up coming off as insecure or indecisive in how you want to look or act. For example, an analogy, if you really like the more nerdy and geeky side of things, embrace it, and you’ll look more attractive and confident. A lot of guys make the pitfall of ignoring things like this, even if it’s integral to them, and come off as indecisive, and you’ll struggle more for the sake of trying to fit in. The point is to just double down on either or. Belts and suspenders weren’t designed to go together, and unfortunately, fashion dictates this, too. I guarantee you, though, if you’re confident in yourself, you can wear those suspenders by themselves and make them look good. It’s just a belt and suspenders don’t really make for a good combination either way, so I’d choose one or the other on the days you’d want to wear them.

@@p_serdiuk That’s a different type of equipment for a different purpose. Civilian suspenders and belts do not go together, and are not made to go together. Battle and utility belts are designed to go with harnesses and tactical suspenders to combine into a singular LBE. As you mentioned, this is for practical implications of bearing more weight from gear. Aesthetically speaking, the former looks more awkward and mismatched; the latter looks, well, tactical, practical, and militaristic. I’d definitely say fashion is both objective and subjective, and military fashion is an entirely different thing from civilian fashion. Yes, wearing camo cargo pants is accepted in American society, but wearing your rig, kit, and gear with a service uniform or dress is an entirely different thing, and you’ll get strange looks. It also comes with the perception, too. Wear camouflage cargo pants and a tank top, and people’ll think you’re a civilian with a little casual military spice added in. Start incorporating things like a battle belt, kit, service uniform, etc, and they’ll wonder why a soldier is present or someone is larping, or other thought processes. But of course, if you’re actually military, wearing your service or dress uniform is completely fine and acceptable, and people will assume you’re in the military. It’s just, you wouldn’t wear your belt and a harness without gear though. Not only would it look awkward in public, your CO would chew you out for making that choice if they saw it.

Moving away from suspenders was a mistake for sure. started wearing them because a belt buckle would dig into my gut when i sat. I have fallen in love with then, i wear a Y back with a single elastic and clips ment to use the belt loops (don't know what they are called but they have a swivel as well) They are SO comfortable.

I'm a bit on the rounder side, trying to lose it but even if I ever do lose my gut to even a small degree...I'll still love my suspenders that I got. I got a pair of the Y strap clip on style suspenders for comfort...a belt buckle of any size can dig into my stomach when I sit down, and not having to adjust my belt after I eat is great. The fact is suspenders sadly are very niche and usually only worn by 3 types of people now 1) heavier set guys/those with a rounder shape as stated in the vid, 2) people who like old fashioned things and don't care about perception and thus wear clothing styles and fashion from before they were born on the regular, and 3) Old folks who already wore suspenders growing up and are used to them. Sadly these 3 types of people that wear suspenders on the regular give a rather...negative look for those who are fashion conscious or want something that looks "cool"....I can tell you right now I have to order my suspenders online cause I don't think I've ever seen a local store sell them over belts.

I grew up in the Pacific Northwest, specifically in ex-logging towns of the coastal timber industries. Suspenders were extremely common, and if you look up the Keys brand of dungarees (very popular with loggers), youll see that they usually come with buttons specifically for suspenders. For them, it had nothing to do with fashion, but everything to do with comfort and utility. These days it has become something of a style in very specific regions...Keys double knee jeans with red suspenders, worn leather boots, and a black and white striped "hickory" shirt...a specific but once common look.

I always thought belts were generally uncomfortable until I got one specifically made of chromexcel leather. Now I think belts are very comfortable! The softness makes all the difference.

It depends on your body shape. Belts are going to be more comfortable than suspenders if you've got enough hips/butt to hold the belt without having to go too tight. If you've got a flat butt or a gut, the belt may require more tightening than is comfortable. But, there's a reason why larger backpacks come with a padded belt, your shoulders aren't really supposed to be holding things up for long periods of time. In the case of suspenders, it's a bit of a moot point as pants aren't typically heavy enough for it to really matter, so folks should wear whichever is more comfortable for them.

Funnily enough this has previously happened with body armor over the ages. For a while, we had early breastplates and loricca segmentata and those were strapped in a way that distributed the weight better, but then going to chainmail it would have a belt around the abdomen which made for very poor weight distribution (very tiring on your waist and shoulders) By the time brigandine cuirasses became a thing, those would be using straps all along the body to help on weight distribution and make it much more comfortable to wear and that carried over to full plate armor as well. Then we got to modern body armor and went right back to the poor weight distribution of chainmail... At least for a while. It has seen improvements over the years both in shape and in making better protection while keeping it as lightweight as possible

Funny that you mention that. I have a pair of suspenders that are designed to attach to a belt. They are a y style, with a clip that slides behind the belt and hooks to the bottom of the belt, there is even a small gap in the clip for the belt loop to pass through. The idea is that you don't have to cinch down the belt and can wear it loose so it is more comfortable, as the suspenders are what actually hold up the pants.

@@donovanb9020 For starting out I recommend a "cheap" set of clip on suspenders. You'll likely need to experiment with where you want them to attach to your pants, and you'll definitely need to experiment with the strap length. Once you have everything adjusted how you want you can easily throw a tape measure over your shoulder (while wearing your pants + cheap suspenders) and measure from the back anchor point to the front anchor point, which will tell you what strap length you need when ordering "nicer" suspenders. Oh, and keep in mind that the attachments "add" to the strap length. Clip ons will add roughly 1 inch of length front and back, and button ons (preferable) will add about 3 inches front and back.

Classic military setup at least into the 1980s was suspenders for the throusers and a free (non looped) belt&suspender setup for ammo pouches (4-8x20 rounds of 7.62x51), mess kit (around 1.5-2kg), canteen (1.5kg), ETool (1.5kg), couple of "I like nobody" DM52s and stuff. Easily worn all day

I've been wearing suspenders and a belt for quite some time. I find the trick to be if one is willing to give them a try, pick a specific outfit or role to fill. I wore mine for my tool belt, but then preferred to wear them every day. I use simple milsurp for casual wear and a nicer set when going out. Honestly I love the look of some great cut trousers, a shirt, waistcoat and suspenders. I would totally adore my husband if he wore that 😅. I have started to wear big flowing skirts a few years back. I make them myself, and they are remodeled after victorian walking skirts with a lot of pleating in the back. They are super comfy and elegant but also heavy as heck because of the extra fabric needed for the pleats. I am honestly considering getting some cool suspenders to keep the heavy skirt up, and sew myself some waistcoat to go with them. Because female 1920's mob-boss is a style I could get behind 😅.

Having said that, I do however think it looks more elegant. Plus, I sag my pants. Not with formal clothing but with my causal stuff. I think parents and others should stop making a big deal about this and let people dress how they like. Saging my pants and dressing in urban style clothing does not stop me from performing in my life. I am in law school now. When I wear suits I'd like to dress similar to the mob. I like urban/gangsta type clothes.

One advantage of a belt is that if you have to do a #2, you don't have to take off your jacket! I say this as a woman who remembers that brief time in the 1970's when leotards were worn as blouses. They looked sleek and smooth, but if you had to use the restroom, you had to strip almost completely. Not fun on a cold day, especially in a public restroom. Bodysuits (that snapped at the crotch) were a later compromise. But those snaps sometimes gave way at inopportune times. And even if they held, they still left a wad of fabric (two layers of material, two packets, 2-3 snaps) between the legs.

To me, the main problems with suspenders are that if they are poorly fited it will hurt you A LOT, especially if the material is bad, so you have to be carefull with what you buy unlike belts that are super easy to ajust. The fact that 99% of the time I don't use formal clothing, and because of that suspender wouldn't make sense, like suspenders with a T-shirt and jeans just looks a bit weird in most cases, and since I don't have a jacket they would have to be all around me in plain view all off the time, I live in a hot area and wouldn't make sense to cover myself more

I love suspenders for comfort in any setting and the style. It also gives you something else to do with your hands when you're fidgety. They're nice. I only have one 2" wide elastic with an X back style, leather in the center and stainless clasps. I paid extra for the durability and the most important detail are clasps that don't slip.

I have only worn suspenders a couple times, but my dad tried them and really likes them. There is a big downside that was not mentioned in this video. Clip on suspenders will damage the spot where they clip onto pants. I can imagine the straps might damage the fabric of your shirt at the shoulders, too.

An interesting essay! I switched to suspenders recently for practical reasons - my body shape was making belts awkward -I am thin and belts could slip off. Had to constantly adjust them depending on standing, sitting position etc. One thing that helped with accepting the transition was the marked change recently from shirts being tucked in to an increased tolerance of wearing them outside the pants meaning there was no awkwardness involved int keeping them tucked in! Much more comfortable, helped with the posture etc. Never going back! In your history though, you completely miss that for many centuries and cultures men did not wear pants at all - it was tunics, skirts, robes and so on. I considered those as well before trying suspenders again.

I got a pair of suspenders from dulath traders and they kind of look like a gun harness. A coworker suggested suspenders when I was working at a feed/hardware store and they have been extremely helpful for manual labor. I actually own a few pairs of pants without belt buckles and a drawstring isnt enough to keep them secure during heavy activity so they have been really useful.

Interesting topic. I remember as a youngster in the late 1980s and early 1990s having suspenders, but like you said, they fell out of fashion real quick. I still wear a belt out of habit and because the style of knife I wear requires a belt-sheath. If I were to switch (because honestly, the discomfort of a belt digging into my midsection is a compelling argument for a swap back to suspenders), I'd have to workshop a solution to carry the knives my friend made for me or find a second sheath for each to wear with suspenders.

I love this! Im an historical costume buff, and we think of womens clothing too much. However, when writing a vintage fashion article for a magazine for classic car clubs, I had to write one for the changes in mens fashioon over the 20th C (1930's - 1980's). And realised that mens fashions are far more dateable than people think. Details of shirt collar shape, on shirts and jackets, tie widths, the cut of pants, and even polo shirts even have their own changing patterns. However, while womens fashions have strong socio-economic origins, many changes largely a reflection of social change or values, I never really knew exactly why mens fashions changed. So, thankyou for the very "doh - of course thats why" explanation.
