Audrey even wanted to check the balloon and valve herself, which everybody would and should do. But her husband prevented her from doing so, telling her that it was unnecessary and he had already checked it. Big red flag there.

I have to object that Audrey was "feeling confident" about the dive. From what I understand, she was pressured by her husband to do this dive, and if you've seen the video footage of her final dive, you can see how totally zoned out and empty she looks. People have speculated that she was in an abusive relationship, and I think that rings true. R.I.P. Audrey Mestre

Second story: 1. The husband was regularly criticized in the no-limits free diving community for being reckless, and had already the blood of two former staff members on his hands 2. The husband was responsible for all the safety in this particular dive 3. The husband was rushing this particular record attempt by not having enough stand-by divers and medical personal on-site and on-shore 4. The husband didn't want any other people inspecting the ascending balloon, when normal procedure would have at least two other people inspecting this absolutely crucial piece of equipment 5. The husband kept her under water for a couple additional minutes trying to resuscitate her... under water 6. The record holder at that point was the husband Yeah, I really wonder what happened...

He'd have to be stupid to do that. Really stupid. I think he was probably egotistical and thought he could do anything and everything free-dive related. He couldn't. But I can understand why he'd think that. I don't think anyone gets to be the world record-holder of such a ridiculously dangerous 'sport' as free-diving without having supreme self-confidence. No, I blame the stand-by diver. The excuse that getting air from him would kill her on the ascent due to expansion ignores the fact that one of the first rules they teach you in scuba diving is to constantly let out a steady trickle of air at all times, but especially during ascent. This is precisely to avoid the dangers of expansion. I'm only a rookie scuba-diver and I'm well aware of that. If the instructors saw you not letting out that trickle of bubbles during any of the underwater exercises they'd immediately call you on it, even the exercises as basic as clearing your mask of water. She may have been free-diving but I'm sure she was an experienced scuba diver too, so she would've known the procedure. And even if she didn't, the stand-by diver would've known. He could've just controlled the pace of their ascent if he couldn't make her understand what she needed to do. But it's so easy to communicate that. You just point to your mouth and let out a trickle of bubbles, then point to them. Couldn't be easier. And blame has to also go to her, for continuing with the dive even after the 30 sec delay. That would be a stupidly long delay in a free dive. There are a lot of people who couldn't hold their breath even that long. She should've aborted. There would've been much broader margins for recovery at that point, at the very least. It's an unfortunate story but I don't think you can pin it all on him. She knew the risks. It's a stupid sport period. Very high risks, minimal gains other than fame. And if you want to risk your only life for fame you kinda deserve to lose it. Sorry, not sorry.

@Jason NO. Please do not spread dangerous misinformation like that. This is NOT how life works beneath water. Although, I will admit I am confused seeing so many comments like this... However, what I have learned is that: Her lungs would be so compressed at this depth that if she took even the slightest inhale of air down there; her lungs would explode. The divers are most definitely not using regular "AIR" as you put it either, for the oxygen becomes toxic when you go below a certain depth. It is agreed upon that the maximum depth limit for a diver to use Compressed Air is 30 to 50 meters. Beyond this, a gas mixture other than air is suggested for use to prevent nitrogen narcosis. Again, they couldn't give her even a breath of that gas either because her lungs would explode at that depth since they were compressed by her holding her breath. The diver had been adjusted through breathing of gas on the way down, while her lungs were compressed by holding her breath, and so her lungs had become so small under the weighted pressure of the water above that she would be unable to take even a single breath from their tanks anyway. They always teach to basically never inhale on the way up, only on your way down. She was doomed.

I remember watching a documentary about The No limits dive, along with audrey history they follow her most direct competitor into achieving the same world record dive. Her competitor was also "managed" by her husband but the difference in preparation and safety measures were abysmal - that included the worst case scenario where the balloon fails (by mechanical or human fault, which almost happened due to her setting hypoxia) She had rescue divers at several depths that by simply passing her from hand to hand could pull her to the surface very fast, medical team on board and at the beach. Audrey had none of that. That dive was doomed from the very beginning, and that husband of hers..... I don't buy is innocence for one second.

If I'm a safety, diver, and it's already time to "screw the record, save her life", you can bet YOUR ASS I'm yanking ol' girl off that rig and swimming up to control her ascent WITH ME, and we'll just trade the regulator back and forth along the way... ANYBODY who suggests ANYTHING different is getting reported for plotting to murder whatever diver is on that rig... AND if there's straps involved, I'll have a bladed instrument that'll take care of them... I think they BOTH need charged. The "buddy breathing" (swap regulator back and forth) procedure has been around since Cousteau. There's no excuse. I'm not sure when they established multiple reg's on "the octopus" BUT I do know that's the standard for rescue classes today. I'm sorry, and it's CERTAINLY NOT on Mr. Ballen here. @gnarthdarkanen74642 жыл бұрын
@@cassini4052 Well, from binging Dive Talk most recently, but even long before I ran across them, it's long been a saying that "No single issue has ever killed a diver." I'm not certified, so just that "Discover Scuba" stuff, and sinus issues are kind of a b*tch, BUT I've been around, and there are plenty of perfectly healthy divers among cavers and motorcycles... both activities I enjoy relatively regular if not frequently... On a bike, any single issue can turn deadly almost instantly... It's why we wear gear and work constantly to increase our collections of GOOD gear over whatever we could scratch together when we got our first bike(s)... haha... But all the longest career holders in scuba are very Zen about stuff. They believe in "think your way through" and they always have contingencies, improvisations, and believe in the proper equipment... AND whenever I've been around SAR swimmers or Safety Divers, those guys are PRICKS about doing their jobs. They're not brazen anti-social types, but don't get in their way. A single person at risk to one of them is like the balance of the entire world on their shoulders. I just don't get a safety diver sitting there watching her like that. There may well be a situation where even as a safety diver I'd have to accept that there's nothing I could do, but that sure as hell wasn't it. Nobody's going to tell them they can't save someone right in front of them... That's just not in the culture... extreme sports or world records be damned... AND damn whatever "the boss" says about it. SO maybe if that rig had rocketed up to the surface, she'd have been put at risk over a single gulp... OR if she'd tried to close her throat to hold her breath on the way up... BUT not buddy breathing. AND Cousteau originally established that you had to be able to take a tank of air down to around 100 feet, hang the rig on the rope, and leave it, for your ascent to be certified for open water... SO it's not like you can't physically go up on a single breath from compressed air at depth if necessary. You just need to know to get rid of the air as fast or even a little faster than it expands as the pressure comes off. It's easiest on you to do so with a controlled ascent, at about 30 feet per minute (recommended) and you just about can't screw it up... BUT lots of people panic all the time, and "bolt for the surface" at double or more that speed without consequences other than getting bitched at when they're back on the dive boat... In any case, we're at risk of navel-gazing at this point. I just couldn't help how her story really pissed me off. That has murder-plot written all over it and an idiot could figure it out. ;o)

Pippins actions from this video does make it sound like he definitely did it, but that's also how MrBallen kinda chose to portray it. But then again if you look at the suicide angle it could be that Pippins already knew what was going to happen, and he made sure that he would stay true to his wife wish of dying in that dive, so he made it so that he was the only one to check the sled because they both knew it was going to fail.

What happened to Mr. Nishimoto was terrible, but, thanks to that tragedy, Mr. Ballen gets to warn people about ANOTHER danger from trapsing around Hawaii. FYI, just because the active volcanos are on the island of Hawaii (aka the Big Island), doesn’t mean that the other islands are safer! In fact, depending on the age of the lava and how much it’s broken down, the ones on the other islands are more prone to crumbling and collapsing than the ones on the Big Island. Second story - this is one more reason why people may not get married anymore… Third story - and the story of corporate negligence and setting people up for failure continues.

Honestly sometimes I wonder why people are even allowed to inhabit the Island. It’s a freaking volcano and recently I believe one of the “inactive” volcanos erupted and many people died and many are still unaccounted for and everything is burning. As a certified rescue diver, I can tell you that you can take a breath of air at 171 meters down and everything is ok, you can also swim up to the surface but, and most important, you must release the air as you go up. You can NOT have a full breath of new air in your lungs as you ascend to the surface, your lungs will explode, killing you, but if you release all of the new air, you will be ok. Divers must continuously breath as they ascend to the surface or they can explode their lungs, free divers dont have that problem as most of you know. She could have taken air in to save her life at 171 meters down, but not hold it in as she ascends. I believe the husband had something to do with her death because he wouldn't let anyone else inspect the equipment before the dive.
@casandrabarata80793 жыл бұрын
That's what surprised me the most about that story. Even as part of your advanced certification, there is a whole unit of study and practice on rescue diving and you learn about the importance of having air in your lungs but continuously expelling it as you ascend. A safety diver came to her aid but did not give her air, which makes me think they were not aware of this, which also makes me question if they were even certified in the first place (which would be par for the course considering the lack of medical personnel and safety regulations that were being followed).

Also, gaslighting and verbal/emotional abuse is something you would do about anything to avoid. If doing the dive put her in a "love bombing" phase of the relationship that would also make her actually want to do whatever he wanted her to as to make him happy and keep the relationship in the love phase. So, those are possibilities and I can understand this. The lack of training is just the legal argument to get the family the financial relief they deserve. 3mil plus 1.5mil to the family? Its nothing. They should have been forced to pay out more to the family AND be forced to pay the amount in man hours they saved not training these people all of these years. The manufacturing accident is horrific. I used to work in manufacturing for engine fan blades and some of the machines were the size of houses. We had a mechanic who came in from Germany who was new to fix one of them. He didn't speak English very well and didn't understand when told to wait because the machine was just paused. He then went inside of the machine and began to work on it without informing anyone and without locking out the machine. Another coworker who'd come back from lunch hit Go and it immediately starts to whip around, nearly crushing the mechanic against the back door. He starts screaming and banging on the walls of the machine, another coworker of mine nearly threw himself at the machine to hit the emergency stop. They pulled him out and very fortunately he just had minor bruising/gashes. After that, the mechanic was not allowed on the floor at all without one of our employees accompanying him. Lockout/tagout is the VERY first thing we learn before going on machines for a damn good reason.

I was a security guard for an automotive factory years ago. One night, I was messing around on my phone in the booth because it was usually a time of night when all was peaceful when suddenly, the entire ground trembled violently beneath my feet and I heard an explosion from inside the central heart of the assembly room to the right of me. I took off toward that area and when I got inside to document the problem, I saw what happened. The factory used molds that weighed anywhere from 50k to 100k, which were transported around the room by massive cranes attached to the ceiling. One of the crane cables had snapped and a 70k mold had come thundering to the ground. One of the managers was taking a desperate head count of his team surrounding him, all of whom were visibly shaken, some of whom were panicking and being held upright by their teammates. Against my better judgment, I wandered around the fallen mold taking pictures for my report. To my UTTER relief, the whole team was fine. No one had been standing where it fell. There wouldn't have been much left to return to the family if they had. To my utter horror, a few days later, a message went out to all employees, including me even though I was contracted through another company, saying basically that this sort of incident is inexcusable and that everyone needs to focus on the factory quota above all else. They were then ordered to continue using the broken crane, which was hastily deemed 'functional' until a new one could be ordered sometime the following year. About twenty people quit and I honestly went not long after. I was beyond disgusted by this point, having reported numerous safety violations and the constant appearance of aggressive drunkards on the property, to which I was told to just tell them to leave if I saw them. (I'm a tiny female going up against what can sometimes be two or three drunken idiots at a time. Yeah, I'm sure that would've gone down REAL well for a mere night guard.) This mess was the final straw. Someone could have lost their life and all this company gave a shit about was its bottom line.

A cable kink caused the sled to stop at 164m & cost her 30 seconds. FACT:The cable didn't kink at all. The sled never stopped or cost Audrey any time loss on the descent.The descent time was excellent. 5. Pipin had kept her underwater a couple additional minutes & he tried to resuscitate her underwater. FACT: Pipin dove down 90m, grabbed her & immediately returned to the surface as fast as possible. The documentary made a point of how dangerous it was for him to descend & ascend so quickly. Pipin didn't try to resuscitate her until he got to the surface. Also, it's not possible to resuscitate anyone underwater.

I called the dude who I figured took my car to get back home, he and two others had rode up with me, and not only did they leave me to die he had been driving my car for the last three days because when I told him to come get me had said, "There isn't enough gas bro." I had filled it up just before getting to the friends house. Which meant in three days he had driven around 350 miles in my car. I told him, "I don't give a fuck! Borrow the shit from your mom and come get me!" He had his mom follow him and dropped my car off a block away and left so he didn't have to see me in person because he knew I was pissed. I was a maintenance technician before I retired. The last 20 years of my career were spent in a welding fabrication department. We had 28 welding and transfer robots in 7 fabrication cells. If the entry gate was opened for any reason the robots came to a halt and were powered down and would NOT move regardless of their position or if the commanded motion had been reached. We had lockout procedures that were designed to keep someone from closing the gate and starting the cell if someone was still inside. But my point is, the robot should NEVER been able to move even when the problem was corrected. This was not only a training failure but it was first and foremost an engineering failure. If the entry gate is open, no robot motion should be allowed unless someone is inside, the robot is in manual mode and the person inside has command of the teach pendant. Even under that manual mode, only very slow motion is allowed.

When one of our robotic arms goes down the only people authorized to fix it is maintenence and they have to LOTO when they perform work.

I was really enjoying listening to Regina's story, a young girl building a life, pursuing her dreams and then I remembered what channel I was watching 😞
@swizzleproxi48103 жыл бұрын
After hearing Regina's story it helps you understand to follow your dreams not money, if a job makes you feel so stressed that you gamble with your life that's not a good job LEAVE IT too much negative energy bad things can happen.

She was not "building a life". She was destroying her life for a pipe dream. I mean, excuse me, she dropped out of school because she had "bills to pay", and then she got a NEW car and a 4000 dollar wedding dress? That makes NO sense at all. She ruined her future.

Am I the only one that takes a huge breath of air after these drowning stories? I used to dive & cave dove the Blue Spring once & that was enough. P.S. Welcome Back big guy. Glad you had a respite. You were missed by everyone.
